Despite a decline in the prices of onion, potato and pulses, the cost of a veg thali remained stable as tomato prices rose sharply, it added.

Onion prices fell 24 per cent on-year due to an influx of late kharif onions, while limited shelf life forced immediate market disposal amid subdued exports.

Potato prices fell 13 per cent on-year as the crop has entered peak harvest phase coinciding with continued liquidation of cold storage stock from the previous rabi season. Pulse prices declined 9 per cent on-year on account of higher opening stocks in the current fiscal.

The average cost of preparing a thali at home is calculated based on input prices prevailing in north, south, east and west India. The monthly change reflects the impact on the common man’s expenditure.

The cost of a non-veg thali fell due to an estimated 7 per cent on-year decline in broiler prices, which account for 50 per cent of the cost, on a high base

“Tomato prices surged due to delayed transplantation, which impacted crop development and yields. This was reflected in a 32 per cent on-year decline in crop arrivals in mandis between November 2025 and January 2026,” said Pushan Sharma, director, Crisil Intelligence.

Vegetable prices are expected to soften in the near term. Tomato prices will likely remain higher on-year until mid-April, and then firm up as seasonal arrivals tighten and the market transitions between crop cycles.

“Potato prices will likely stay subdued through March-April, during the peak arrival season, while onion prices may face pressure over the next two to three months unless exports pick up meaningfully,” said Sharma.

The Middle East uncertainties and potential trade disruptions may soften demand for basmati rice in the near term, exerting downward pressure on prices.

As Iran accounts for nearly 18 per cent of India’s basmati rice exports and other Middle Eastern countries for 55-60 per cent, exporters are cautious about potential logistical challenges.

“However, non-basmati rice exports, primarily destined for African countries, are unlikely to be affected significantly,” said Sharma.

The final will be held at the iconic Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, where India aims to extend their remarkable streak and claim another major ICC title by defeating New Zealand.

India booked their place in the T20 World Cup 2026 final after a thrilling semifinal win over England.

Sanju Samson`s 42-ball 89 set the tone for India`s massive first innings score of 253-7. However, England, courtesy of Jacob Bethell`s century, were in the hunt for India`s target for most of the match.

With England appearing to be on course for victory, the match`s turning point came when Jasprit Bumrah delivered a brilliant 18th over, conceding just six runs while England needed 45 from the final three overs at the start of it.

Following his effort, Hardik Pandya further tightened the pressure with an excellent penultimate over, giving away only nine runs and dismissing Sam Curran.

This highlights the importance of early recognition and timely intervention in adult hearing loss.

While cochlear implants are commonly associated with children born with hearing impairment, they are also used to treat adults who experience severe and irreversible hearing loss. In some cases, the damage progresses rapidly and cannot be corrected with hearing aids. This patient’s hearing loss began in 2019 after he was prescribed medication for a medical condition. However, the drugs included those known to damage the auditory nerve, leading to hearing loss with a devastating impact.

Having previously developed normal speech and hearing, the patient suddenly became completely deaf in both ears. Hearing aids offered no benefit due to the severity of the loss, and his ability to communicate came to a halt. For nearly five years, his life was at a standstill. A cochlear implant was performed on one side. Unlike hearing aids, cochlear implants bypass damaged parts of the ear and directly stimulate the auditory nerve. After surgery, the implant is activated through a process called mapping, followed by structured therapy. Because of the five-year gap without hearing, the patient required rehabilitation to help the brain adapt to sound again.

Speaking about the case, Dr Shama Kovale, who is the consultant, ENT Surgeon, Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital in Mumbai, said, “Even as an adult, if you have hearing loss and it is sudden, you have to come and see a doctor and get it treated immediately. It is like a stroke for the ear. If things do not improve, then implant is required to live a normal life. This young man had a medical condition for which he was prescribed medication, and unfortunately that medication led to profound hearing loss. Drug-induced deafness is a known but often overlooked condition. When hearing loss is severe, hearing aids do not help, and cochlear implantation becomes the only effective solution. With timely surgery and rehabilitation, patients can regain hearing and return to a normal, independent life.”

The results have been encouraging. The patient can now hear sounds and has begun the journey back to independent communication. With continued therapy and adaptation, he is expected to resume a normal life. This case highlights a critical public health message. Sudden hearing loss in adults is a medical emergency. Often described as a stroke of the ear, it requires immediate evaluation by an ENT specialist. If hearing does not recover and the loss is severe to profound, cochlear implantation should be considered without delay to prevent long-term disability.

The case also draws attention to drug-induced hearing loss, a known but under-recognised condition. Certain medications, including gentamicin, some tuberculosis drugs and some chemotherapy drugs, can cause irreversible damage to hearing. Any early signs of hearing impairment while on such medications should prompt urgent medical review and modification of treatment.

Beyond restoring sound, this intervention has turned a profoundly disabling condition into a story of recovery with the patient gaining a second chance at reclaiming his life and becoming independent.

This Holi, learn how to identify skin emergencies and repair your barrier with expert advice from dermatologists

Holi, more popularly called the festival of colours is a celebration of spirit, a vibrant explosion of joy that marks the arrival of spring. However, for your skin, the revelry can quickly devolve into a battlefield.

While many powders are marketed under the organic or herbal, the reality on the ground is often far more abrasive. Industrial dyes, heavy metals, and even powdered glass are frequently disguised as innocent gulaal, leading to a post-festive surge in chemical burns, severe dermatitis, and systemic allergic reactions.

To help you navigate these hidden hazards, mid-day spoke to Indian dermatologists to provide a definitive guide on identifying, treating, and reversing Holi-related skin damage.

Spotting the emergency

The first step to treating an allergy is identifying it. You need to know if you are looking at a stubborn pigment or a medical emergency.

How to distinguish between a stain and a reaction

“A standard skin stain is benign. The skin feels normal, and the colour fades gradually with gentle washing. However, if you experience pain, itchiness, or progressive redness, swelling, or blistering, it is not just a stain,” warns Dr Prachi B. Bodkhe, dermatologist at Envi Aesthetics.

Below, she outlines symptoms you should take note of. If you experience any of the following, you are dealing with a chemical burn or a severe allergic reaction:

Identifying a chemical burn:
Immediate sensation: Burning or stinging upon application or removal of colour.
Visual cues: Redness that intensifies over time rather than fading.
Physical damage: Appearance of blisters, peeling, or raw, weeping skin.
Sensitivity: Intense tenderness and swelling in the affected area.
Identifying an allergic reaction:
Sensation: If you experience severe, uncontrollable itching.
Texture: A raised red rash, hives, or skin that feels painfully tight and dry.
Facial involvement: Swelling of the eyelids or lips.
Advanced signs: Oozing or crusting patches.

The three-step immediate response

If you feel a burning sensation during the festivities, the clock is ticking. Bodkhe recommends three non-negotiable steps:
1. The 20-minute rinse: Immediately flush the area with plenty of running tap water for 15 to 20 minutes. The goal is to dilute the chemical. It is critical that you do not scrub. Scrubbing pushes the toxins deeper into the dermis.
2. Barrier repair: Once flushed, apply a bland emollient or aloe vera gel (such as Elovera AD lotion) every 2 to 3 hours to protect the raw skin until you can see a specialist.
3. Strict avoidance of kitchen hacks: Do not apply lemon, vinegar, toothpaste, baking soda, or curd. These substances are highly acidic or alkaline and will worsen a chemical burn.

Red flags and the danger of scrubbing

When a reaction goes beyond a simple rash, it can become life-threatening. Dr Bodkhe highlights specific red flag symptoms that indicate a systemic reaction (like angioedema or anaphylaxis):
1. Rapidly increasing swelling.
2. Facial or eyelid puffiness.
3. Difficulty breathing or swallowing.
4. Extensive blistering across large areas of the body.

If these occur, seek urgent medical care immediately.

Why you must stop scrubbing
It is a common instinct to try and scrub away the toxic dye. “This is the most dangerous mistake you can make. Scrubbing damages an already compromised skin barrier. The friction increases the absorption of the chemicals, worsens inflammation, and can convert a mild case of dermatitis into a full-thickness chemical burn,” explains Dr Bodkhe.

The Holi first-aid kit

Every household should move away from DIY hacks and toward medical-grade essentials. “While some traditional remedies—like a paste of cold curd, malai, and fine gram flour—can be soothing for mild irritation, they should never be allowed to dry on the skin or be rubbed off harshly,” Dr Bodkhe asserts. She shares an essential kit that can be prepped and kept at home to navigate Holi:
1. Soap-free gentle cleanser: Sebamed or Cetaphil to clean without stripping lipids.
2. Ceramide-based moisturiser: Cetaphil Daily Advanced, Elovera AD, or Moisturex Soft for active barrier repair.
3. Pure aloe vera gel: This is most effective for immediate cooling.
4. Low-potency topical steroid: Can use Cutisoft 1 per cent cream for localised inflammation. Please ensure to use it sparingly and avoid large areas without professional guidance.
5. Oral antihistamine: Levocet 5 mg tablet can be taken for itching. However, always make sure to consult with a physician before ingestion.

The zero-friction guide for sensitive areas

Facial skin is significantly thinner and more reactive, particularly for children and those with eczema. Dr Mikki Singh, founder and medical director at Bodycraft Clinics, advocates for a zero-friction approach to pigment removal to prevent secondary infections like Staph.

She outlines the oil cleansing method below:
Apply: Use virgin coconut or almond oil (which are antimicrobial and non-comedogenic). Apply via a cotton swab or clean finger to the eyes, nostrils, and lips.
Emulsify: Let the oil sit for 5 to 10 minutes. This allows the pigments to lift passively into the oil.
Wipe: Gently wipe with a damp, soft cloth—no rubbing.
Rinse: For eyes, use a lukewarm water rinse followed by a rose water compress. For nostrils and lips, use baby shampoo diluted 1:10 with water.
Finish: Always follow up with a ceramide-heavy moisturiser to seal the micro-tears created by the dye.

The post-Holi recovery timeline

“Skin damage from industrial dyes often peaks 24 to 48 hours after the event due to the inflammation cascade," Singh explains. She outlines a week-long recovery routine to ensure your skin returns to health safely.

Days 1 to 3: The repair phase
Cleanse: Use the gentle oil-cleansing method AM and PM.
Soothe: Apply aloe vera gel and fragrance-free moisturisers.
Internal hydration: Drink plenty of water to support cellular repair.
Protection: Use SPF 30+ religiously, as damaged skin is highly prone to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

When to resume active ingredients?

Many people make the mistake of jumping back into their anti-aging or brightening routines too early. Singh warns that premature use of actives can worsen the penetration of residual toxins.

Up to 72 Hours: Avoid all actives entirely.
Day 4 to 5: You may gradually reintroduce Vitamin C, but only 1 to 2 times a week and applied after a layer of moisturizer.
Week 2: You may resume Retinol (0.1 to 0.3 per cent) twice a week, provided there is no lingering redness or peeling.

It is a highly specialised treatment used in patients suffering from severe tricuspid regurgitation, a condition where a valve on the right side of the heart does not close properly, causing blood to flow backward, and congestive heart failure.

To the best of the doctors` and hospital`s medical knowledge, this is the first such case in India and has been reported only once globally.

Understanding the health condition

The procedure was carried out by Dr Subhasish Deb, consultant – Cardiology, and the dedicated cath lab team at Manipal Hospital Mukundapur in Kolkata. The woman, Shyamali Biswas, a 62-year-old homemaker from Sonarpur, had a long history of severe heart disease.

In 2023, she underwent tricuspid valve replacement surgery in Vellore after her natural tricuspid valve became severely damaged. Due to advanced heart failure, she received an artificial bicaval valve system instead of a conventional valve repair.

Earlier this year, she began feeling unwell and was admitted to the hospital in Kolkata on February 2 after being diagnosed with complete heart block, a serious condition where faulty electrical signals cause the heart to beat dangerously slowly.

Given the critical nature of her condition, doctors advised an urgent pacemaker implantation. However, the procedure was exceptionally challenging because the patient already had an artificial valve placed in the superior vena cava, one of the main blood vessels returning blood to the heart. This superior vena caval valve created significant difficulty in placing the pacemaker lead using conventional techniques, as pacemaker wires usually pass through these veins to reach the heart. Despite these challenges, the cardiology team successfully implanted the pacemaker through meticulous planning, advanced technical skills, and precise execution.

Uniqueness of the procedure

Patients with artificial tricuspid valves who later require pacemakers are extremely rare. Explaining the uniqueness of the procedure, Dr Patra said, “This was an extremely rare and technically demanding case because the artificial bicaval valve system completely changes the normal anatomy of the heart. The presence of a valve in the superior vena cava makes conventional pacemaker lead implantation particularly challenging, as even minor misplacement can damage the valve or compromise blood flow. To our knowledge, this is the first such procedure in India and only the second reported worldwide.”

Expressing her gratitude, Nabanita Biswas, daughter of the elderly woman, said, “We were extremely anxious about my mothers condition, especially since she had already undergone major heart surgery in 2023. We are deeply thankful to Dr Patra and his team for handling such a complex case with great care and precision. My mother is currently on BiPAP support and under regular medical follow-up, and we are hopeful she will return to her normal life very soon.”

More recently, the café has been trending on social media as it is all set to open in Mumbai at the Eros building in Churchgate. The café is not only being visited by food influencers but also by Mumbaikars, who were invited to experience its free food trial from March 2 to 5, with long queues seen outside the railway station during Holi.

Must-try dishes at Rameshwaram Cafe

If you have been to the other outlets across India, then you are already an expert, but if it is your first time, then you will like a lot of delicious dishes there. While you can try out the ghee podi idli, and the filter coffee, there are many other traditional must-try South Indian dishes to not only explore but enjoy there.

The beauty of this outlet is that they have a Jain version of the puri bhaji, for which the vegetable is usually made from potatoes, but will be replaced with banana, commonly used a vegetable in south India.

What is in The Rameshwaram Cafe in Mumbai?

While the eatery traditionally has a standing dining area at its other outlets where people can expect fast service, the Mumbai area also has a seated dining area spread across the first floor of the two floor-restaurant at Churchgate.

Additionally, the cafe also has a private dining area, and a separate scenic section for people who want to work out of there, with a charging sockets, making it ideal for many Mumbaikars, who have switched to work-from-home after the Covid-19 pandemic.

The focus is moving away from grand gestures toward mutual effort and honest communication, influenced in part by strong K-drama characters and independent on-screen female leads.

Observing the trend, dating app happn has christened this emerging shift as "No Saviour Season", a cultural trend where women are no longer drawn to rescue narratives, but to relationships built on understanding and equality.

According to a recent survey by dating app, Indian women today prioritise emotional intelligence, effort, and mutual respect over outdated romantic ideals.

Among Indian users, pop culture is also playing a visible role in this shift. Nearly 49 per cent say emotionally expressive characters influence what they find attractive, showing that reel love stories are quietly reframing real-life expectations. The idea of a strong yet emotionally aware partner is no longer niche; it’s becoming a widely appreciated standard in modern relationships. 62 per cent prefer a balanced mix of strength and emotional expression over traditionally dominant portrayals.

At the same time, female leads are evolving too. 36 per cent resonate most with independent and emotionally strong women, signalling a growing rejection of outdated romance tropes. The days of waiting to be chosen or tolerating uneven effort are fading fast. In fact, accepting less than mutual effort (36 per cent) and waiting to be pursued (30 per cent) are among the most rejected dating narratives today.

The “No Saviour Season” represents not giving up on love, but raising the standard. Not anti-romance, but pro-reciprocity. Even gestures of affection are being redefined. Grand declarations are taking a backseat to intentional effort: 34 per cent value acts that reflect mutual investment, while 31 per cent prefer meaningful conversations over performative displays. Romance, today, feels slower, and more emotionally literate.

As K-dramas continue to dominate streaming queues, their emotional blueprint seems to be influencing something deeper: a generation of women raising the standard for what modern love should look like. Ahead of International Women’s Day, observed on March 8 every year, it’s clear that romance isn’t being rejected but being rewritten.

Karima Ben Abdelmalek, CEO and President of the dating app, said, “What we’re seeing is a cultural recalibration of romance. Women are no longer drawn to intensity without intention. Emotional intelligence, equality, and mutual effort are becoming the true markers of attraction. At happn, we see users prioritising partners who feel aligned, not overpowering. ‘No Saviour Season’ captures that moment perfectly: love built on choice, not rescue.”

The report said an early, intense and prolonged heatwave could sharply accelerate demand for cooling appliances after a weak base in 2025, potentially driving earnings upgrades and margin expansion for sector players.

The report noted, "With the IMD forecasts suggesting a high probability of El Nino re-emergence in 2026, the coming summer could mark a decisive cyclical upturn for cooling category."

According to the report, a milder summer and erratic weather conditions in April-May 2025 disrupted peak demand last year, leading to slower inventory sell-through and moderation in growth across the sector. However, a stronger summer in 2026 could reverse this trend by boosting secondary sales and improving channel inventory cycles.

The report noted that air conditioner demand could exceed expectations if the heatwave sustains, supported by low penetration levels of around 8-10 per cent, impulse buying, replacement demand and deeper penetration in tier-II and tier-III cities.

A heat-driven demand cycle may also improve pricing discipline in the industry, allowing companies to pass on higher input costs, such as copper and currency-related pressures, with limited impact on demand. Higher sales of premium and inverter-based models, along with stronger plant utilisation during peak season, could further drive operating leverage and expand margins.

The report maintained a constructive outlook for cooling categories, citing the potential for sustained earnings growth and valuation re-rating if heat intensity remains high through the summer months. A prolonged heatwave could accelerate inventory liquidation, strengthen pricing power and improve operating leverage across the sector.

It added that stronger peak-season demand, combined with higher night temperatures, could enable companies to pass on recent price hikes linked to higher copper prices, foreign exchange movements and new energy-efficiency regulations.

The report concludes that the upcoming summer could become an inflection point for the sector as stronger demand improves return ratios and drives earnings momentum across the cooling ecosystem.

The successful procedure has significantly improved her chances of carrying a pregnancy safely in the future.

The 23-year-old who had been struggling with severe menstrual pain, irregular cycles, and three recurrent pregnancy losses in the second trimester came to Dr Uddhavraj Dudhedia, director and head (chief), Advanced Robotic Gynaecology and Centre for Advanced Endometriosis, seeking specialised care.

Investigations revealed that she had a bicornuate uterus: a condition present from birth in which the uterus develops in two separate chambers instead of forming one single cavity. In her case, there was also a duplication of the cervix, making the condition more complex. Such congenital uterine anomalies are uncommon but are known to increase the risk of infertility, miscarriage, and preterm delivery.

To address this condition, doctors recommended a robotic Strassmann Metroplasty, which is a reconstructive surgery that joins the two separate halves of a divided uterus to create one single cavity capable of supporting pregnancy. The robotic approach was chosen for the high level of precision required to reconstruct the delicate uterine muscle.

The surgery was led by Dr Uddhavraj Dudhedia, along with his team including Dr Anukriti Singh and Dr Nimrah Shaikh. Using advanced robotic-assisted technology, surgeons operated through small incisions with magnified three-dimensional visualisation. During the procedure, the two separate chambers of the uterus were carefully connected, the tissue dividing them was removed, and a single unified uterine cavity was reconstructed.

The uterine wall was then rebuilt in layers to restore its natural shape and strength, which a critical factor in supporting future pregnancies. The surgery was completed successfully, and the patient had a smooth and stable recovery during her hospital stay.

Commenting on the case, Dr. Dudhedia said, “This surgery represents more than a technological milestone — it represents hope for women who have been told that carrying a pregnancy safely may not be possible.

Correcting the structure of the uterus can dramatically improve pregnancy outcomes in selected cases, but also highlighting why advanced medical care can make a huge difference, especially when it comes to define the future of a woman`s pregnancy.

It highlighted talent shortages in niche areas, rising labour costs, and the need for large-scale reskilling to meet rapid technological shifts. Skills in leadership and management (22 per cent), AI and machine learning (16 per cent), and project management (15 per cent) are emerging as the most critical over the next five years.

Labour market trends indicate cautious optimism: 42 per cent of professionals are actively seeking new opportunities, while 47 per cent are open to offers but not actively searching, said the report. In healthcare, job changes in clinical research and regulatory affairs may result in salary increases of 20–35 per cent, while fintech and data finance roles may see 30–40 per cent increases. IT specialists such as AI/ML engineers, data engineers, and cybersecurity professionals typically expect 10–12 per cent growth.

Other digital roles, including full-stack, cloud, and DevOps engineers, generally see 8–10 per cent increases. Strategic leadership roles in BFSI, such as CFOs and CROs, command salaries more than twice the market average, while metro cities offer 10–20 per cent higher pay than Tier 2 and Tier 3 locations.

Retention is increasingly driven by holistic employment value, with work-life balance (25 per cent), professional development (23 per cent), brand reputation (16 per cent), managerial quality and culture (14 per cent), and benefits (13 per cent) emerging as key factors. Flexible work arrangements are widespread, with 43 per cent in hybrid roles, 35 per cent fully remote, and 22 per cent fully in-office.

However, AI adoption raises concerns, with 65 per cent of professionals fearing bias in AI-led screening and 35–45 per cent worried about automation reducing job opportunities. Sunil C. Country Manager, Adecco India said we are seeing a clear shift in India’s employment landscape towards a more selective, skills-driven model as digital transformation and automation reshape talent demand.

“Salary hikes in 2026 are expected to remain moderate at 6–10 per cent across most industries, with stronger growth concentrated in emerging domains such as Generative AI, data science, cloud, cybersecurity, blockchain, 5G, IoT, quantum computing, and augmented reality over the next three to five years,” he stated.

The findings are based on the analysis of 200 Indian blood samples, aimed at understanding hidden chemical exposures, including pesticides, antibiotics, steroids and so-called "forever chemicals" that may be silently affecting health.

According to the study, 78 per cent of those tested were exposed to pesticide residues, with 36 per cent exposed to three or more pesticides, indicating cumulative exposure that may pose serious health risks.

It stated "The findings indicate widespread exposure to toxins, entering the body through everyday food consumption, plastic usage, groundwater and environmental pollution".

In addition, 54 per cent of the samples showed the presence of antibiotics. The study noted that such exposure is linked to antimicrobial resistance, harder-to-treat infections, and disruption of the gut microbiome, which may contribute to metabolic disorders.

The report further stated that 39 per cent of those tested were exposed to steroids, compounds that may cause endocrine disruption and increased carcinogenic risk.

Meanwhile, 38 per cent tested positive for forever chemicals, persistent toxins that may increase cancer risk and are associated with reduced fertility, thyroid disease, hormone suppression, high cholesterol, liver damage and ulcerative colitis.

Notably, 17 per cent of the samples had 10 or more toxins in their blood across three categories, indicating hidden chronic exposure.

The findings suggest widespread exposure to toxins entering the body through everyday food consumption, plastic usage, groundwater and environmental pollution.

MicrobioTx analysed samples from urban populations across 9 Indian states and 14 cities. The analysis uncovered significant exposure to pesticides, insecticides, antibiotics, steroidal growth regulators and forever chemicals.

While there is growing awareness about the health risks of exposure to pesticides, antibiotics and steroids in animal-derived products such as meat, milk, eggs and honey, the study highlighted that not many people are aware of forever chemicals.

Forever chemicals are synthetic, man-made substances widely used for their water, heat and grease-resistant properties in products such as non-stick cookware, food packaging, and water-resistant fabrics and coatings.

The study noted that many of these compounds are prohibited as they are known to pose serious health risks in humans.

This unique custom begins days before the festival with what locals fondly call a "manhunt" for a son-in-law. This year, the "honour" fell to Shivaji Galphade, originally from Dongaon in Kaij tehsil, who settled in Vida after his marriage.

"The tradition dates back nearly nine decades and was started by a villager named Anantrao Deshmukh. What began as a light-hearted prank, parading his own son-in-law on a donkey, gradually evolved into an eagerly anticipated annual ritual embraced by the entire village," a resident said.

According to villagers, a week before Holi, groups of village youths form search teams to identify eligible sons-in-law residing in or visiting Vida.

Once selected, the chosen one is kept under friendly watch to ensure he doesn`t escape before the big day.

On the morning of Holi or Dhulivandan, amid drumbeats and showers of colour, the son-in-law is ceremoniously seated on a donkey. Wearing a garland made of old footwear, he is paraded through the village lanes as residents cheer and celebrate.

Despite the satirical nature of the ride, the tradition is rooted in communal bonding rather than malice.

Before the procession commenced on Tuesday, participants paid tribute to a portrait of the late Deputy CM Ajit Pawar.

The donkey ride is followed by a formal ceremony of honour. Traditionally, the village presents the son-in-law with a new set of clothes, a saree, and a gold ring. However, due to the recent surge in gold prices, the village committee decided to stick to traditional attire as a gift this year, a villager added.

"I never imagined I would be chosen for the donkey ride this year," said Galphade, who works as a daily wage labourer.

This is a local tradition which I accepted in the spirit of the festival, he said.

It couldn’t get better for Niles Hollowell-Dhar, popularly known by his stage name KSHMR, because he is performing in the country for Holi and is set to tour five cities for the Sunburn Holi Weekend, starting with Mumbai on March 3, and even making his debut in Bhubaneshwar.

He shares, “I`m super excited to be back and to not only be back for one show, but to get to do a whole tour and be able to travel because I have friends and fans, who say, ‘Why don`t you ever come to Bengaluru?`" Finally, I have some good news to tell them. It`s nice to say that this time I`ll be making the rounds and seeing some of my fans and my friends that I don`t get to see so often. And of course, to do it around Holi is a special time. The spirits are going to be high.”

The beauty of this visit is going to be the fact that the music producer doesn’t particularly have any memories of celebrating Holi, so he is excited to witness it live for yet another time. “I have played with colours. The last time I came to do a tour for Holi, I wound up covered in the colours and everything. So, that was beautiful.”

It is not only the culture and the tradition of applying colours but also the music that forms an important part of Holi celebrations in India. A playlist that includes ‘Rang Barse’ is a must, but over time even that has evolved to include many new tracks, and KSHMR has seen that happen. So, what is it that fans can expect at the performances? “Indian music is received very well at festivals and not only in India. It (the performance) is going to be big with some of the special edits, remixes, and Bollywood tracks; I think those will go well. I like the special songs around Holi also, which I`ve already done remixes for too. Indian music is received well, not just in India, but in other countries, too, you know, like, I think it`s like a special feeling that they don`t get from other music.”

The timing for his tour couldn’t be any better, as he has only just released his latest album, ‘Sounds of Kashmir,` on March 2 and has experimented with so many different Indian sounds, but there is one instrument that he particularly loves. “The flute is one of my favourite instruments, apart from the shehnai and table. These are such expressive instruments; like the tabla is a drum, but it also has a tone, a pitch to it. I can`t think of another drum that is bending. There are some maybe, but to get pitches bending with it is just so expressive.”

Beauty of Indian music

Maybe KSHMR’s paternal roots in Jammu and Kashmir keep pulling him back because he is forever mesmerised by Indian music. “I think every culture has its different instruments, and it has its own music and everything, but there is something special about India. It`s just a lot of iconic, special instruments and grooves and scales. I know every culture has it, but India is just special; it`s really in a class of its own because of just how many instruments it has. You just can’t say "Indian music"; you really must be more specific about what style that you`re talking about.” Given his love for electronic music and particularly EDM music, the musician adds another favourite instrument to the mix during our conversation. “All of it is nice and inspiring to me. If I were to pick one, I think it would just be the big drums, like the Bollywood-style drums, where you have an ensemble and a drum line, and everybody`s playing in unison,” he explains.

Using many different Indian elements in his music, ask Dhar if he believes that it will help Gen-Z discover Indian music through EDM music, and he is positive about it and even shares an anecdote. “When they listen to my music, they`re going to hear little bits of that, and maybe it will open their interest to learning more about where that music comes from. It`s kind of like me with hip-hop music. I remember there would be samples all over these hip-hop beats of old records, and I would be like, `Oh, this is so beautiful.` Where did this come from?’ And then I would look where it came from and see, oh, it`s a sample of some song that came out 50 years ago. The last time the country experienced a lunar eclipse was in September 2025.

With temples being closed for the celestial event, many devotees across India even visited and prayed at the holy places earlier this morning.

As the Lunar Eclipse takes place today, here are five things you need to know:

What is a Lunar Eclipse?

The phenomenon occurs when the entire Moon passes through the Earth`s umbral shadow. A partial lunar eclipse, in contrast, takes place when only a part of the Moon moves into the Earth`s shadow.

Where will the Lunar Eclipse occur in India?

Speaking to ANI, former director Dr Duari said, "On 3rd March, there will be a total lunar eclipse. However, from India, we will not be able to see the full eclipse as the moon will be below our horizon. From India, only a partial lunar eclipse will be visible... The full eclipse will mainly be visible from North America, Australia, and the Pacific."

He further elaborated on the timings of the celestial event, stating, "The partial eclipse will begin at around 3:20 pm Indian Standard Time, and the moon will slowly be covered by the Earth`s shadow. By 4:34 pm, the total eclipse will begin and will last until 5:32 pm, meaning the moon will be fully in the Earth`s shadow for 58 minutes. It will be a total lunar eclipse... This eclipse will not have any effect on Holi."

During the research, the institute`s doctors have found a special gland located in the nasopharyngeal region, which is situated behind the nose and in the upper part of the throat of human beings.

"Not only this, AIIMS doctors have also clearly demonstrated the duct emerging from this gland, about which no prior information was available. This discovery marks a new and important step in understanding the structure of the human body," the institute said in a statement on Friday.

The entire research was conducted by a group of six senior doctors, Sunita Arvind Athavale, Sheetal Kotgirwar, Manal M. Khan, Anshul Rai, Deepti Joshi, and Rekha Lalwani, according to a press note of AIIMS Bhopal. Through detailed study and microscopic examination, the team clarified the gland`s location, size, and its relationship with surrounding organs.

Importantly, for the first time, the drainage duct of this gland was also confirmed, proving that it is indeed an independent gland. The research has been published in the prestigious international journal Journal of Anatomy, which is highly respected in the field of anatomical sciences.

"The study was accepted after thorough expert review, establishing its scientific reliability. This discovery will directly benefit patients. A better understanding of this region of the nose and throat will enable safer and more precise head and neck surgeries. It will also assist in cancer treatment planning and radiotherapy," it said.

On this achievement, executive director and CEO of AIIMS Bhopal, Madhabananda Kar, congratulated the research team and said that such studies reflect the institute`s excellence and multidisciplinary research capability. He asserted that this discovery will help improve the accuracy and safety of head and neck surgeries, cancer treatment planning, radiotherapy, and disease detection through medical imaging, directly benefiting patients.

"This achievement proves that even in parts of the human body that have been studied for a long time, new and important information can still emerge. This discovery marks a significant and inspiring step forward in the field of medical science," Kar said.

Across India, early Holi festivities have begun, drawing locals and tourists alike into vibrant gatherings that reflect the festival`s deep cultural roots and joyful spirit.

In Himachal Pradesh, Holi festivities started early in Mandi, where a large number of devotees gathered at the Raj Madhav Rai Temple. The temple complex came alive with dance, devotional songs and colourful celebrations as people played with gulal and enjoyed the festive spirit. Visitors from across India were seen joining the locals in the celebrations.

A tourist who visited Mandi to experience Holi shared his thoughts while speaking to ANI. Talking about his first Holi experience in the town, he said that he found the arrangements very well managed. He added that separate barricades for men and women made the celebration comfortable for everyone.

Encouraging others to visit, he said, "This was my first Holi experience. I found Mandi`s system very beautiful. There were proper barricades, with separate areas for women and men. I would tell everyone to come to Mandi and experience Holi here."

In Madhuri, women celebrated a special version of the festival known as Widow`s Holi at the Gopinath Temple premises. Women were seen playing with colours and flowers, smiling and enjoying the moment together. The celebration stood as a symbol of joy, togetherness and new beginnings.

Meanwhile, Madhya Pradesh witnessed a unique Holi celebration at Mahakal Van in Ujjain. Devotees dressed up as Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, along with Nandi and `bhoot-pishach` characters. They played with gulal and took part in the celebrations, creating a colourful and spiritual atmosphere.

In Uttar Pradesh, the famous Lathmaar Holi was celebrated in Barsana, in Mathura district. Following age-old traditions, women playfully chased men with sticks as crowds gathered to witness this special form of Holi that attracts visitors from across the country.

Holi, also known as the Spring Festival, marks the arrival of spring and the harvest season. The celebration is deeply rooted in Hindu mythology, symbolising the triumph of good over evil.

The festival begins with Holika Dahan, where a bonfire is lit to mark the death of Holika, a symbol of evil and a special Puja to burn evil spirits is performed.

So, we got Indian chefs to share recipes for their most unique variations

The dosa is possibly one of the most delicious creations to come out of India, especially if you love something simple yet delicious, that you can play around with so many different kinds of flavours, the possibilities are endless. Over time, we know of the classic Sada Dosa but that has transformed into so many variations such as the Masala Dosa and Mysore Masala Dosa.

However, Indians love to innovate and have since popularised the cheese version, and in many eateries in Mumbai, there is also an Ice Cream Dosa. While we don’t want to go that far, innovation is key with dosa, according to Indian chefs, whom we spoke to, especially one where you take flavour up a notch with the use of ingredients that every one of us are enjoying now more than ever before.

Every year, World Dosa Day is observed on March 3 to celebrate the unique South Indian delicacy, and even as almost every other Indian loves it, the dosa has evolved into so much more. As Indian chefs continue to play around with its flavours, here are some interesting recipes. Imagine Jackfruit in your dosa, Truffle and mushroom, or arbi and podi among other savoury, because there are sweet ones that have chocolate and banana too. So, put on your chef’s hat and have fun with flavours.

Jackfruit Seed Dosa

The beauty of making a dosa is that you can relish your own variations, and while there are many popular versions, Nagesh Poojari, who is the chef at Dakshin Legacy in BKC, says you can make Jackfruit Seed Dosa. He shares, "Some of the most sustainable recipes already exist in our grandmothers’ kitchens. This dosa celebrates ingredients we often discard but are deeply nutritious."

Ingredients:
Dosa rice 1 cup
Grated fresh coconut 1/2 cup
Boiled jackfruit seeds (peeled) 8-10 nos
Poha (flattened rice) 2 tbsp
Cumin seeds 1/2 tsp
Dried red chillies 2 nos
Salt to taste
Water as required
Coconut oil for cooking

Method:
1. Soak dosa rice for 5–6 hours.
2. Grind the soaked rice with coconut, jackfruit seeds, poha, chillies, cumin, and salt into a smooth batter.
3. Add water to achieve pouring consistency. No fermentation required.
4. Heat a dosa tawa and spread batter slightly thick.
5. Drizzle coconut oil and cook both sides until golden.

Truffle Mushroom and Cheese Dosa

While you can always have the traditional dosa varieties, there are many different kinds that have sprouted over the years, including other sweet varieties. However, Anshul Dhyani, who is the executive chef at ITC Grand Central in Parel says, "Innovation in food is about respecting tradition while adding your signature soul to it. A dosa is a canvas, paint it boldly." It is also why he shares recipes for not one but two different types such as Truffle Mushroom and Cheese Dosa, which he says is a luxurious, and earthy twist on the classic South Indian staple; he also says you can make a Chocolate Banana Dessert Dosa, which he says is a decadent, indulgent, and irresistible sweet dosa.

Ingredients (Serves 2–3)

For the dosa batter:
Regular dosa batter (fermented) 2 cups
For the filling:
Button mushrooms, finely chopped 1 cup
Butter 1 tbsp
Garlic, finely minced 1 tsp
Onion, small, finely chopped 1 nos
Crushed black pepper 1/2 tsp
Salt to taste
Truffle oil 1 tsp
Mozzarella cheese, grated 1/2 cup
Fresh parsley, chopped 1 tbsp

Method:
1.
Charcoal Arbi Podi Dosa

Exploring flavours through a little bit of drama, Rajan Kumar, who is the executive chef at Via Bombay in Chembur, says, "This is a show-stopping creation that combines the dramatic visual appeal of activated charcoal with the earthy richness of arbi (tarrow root) and the fiery punch of podi spice mix, a dosa that is as striking on the plate as it is on the palate." Kumar says they wanted to honour the soul of the traditional dosa while giving it a contemporary identity that excites the modern diner.

Ingredients:

Charcoal dosa batter
Dosa Batter 200 gm
Activated Charcoal Powder 1 gm
Salt 2 gm ,
Sugar 2 gm

Podi arbi mixture
Ghee - 30 gm
Curry leaves - 6 to 8 leaves
Mustard seeds - 2 gm
Onion - 30 gm
Garlic - 5 gm
Arbi (Taro Root) - 300 gm
Salt - 1 gm
Black pepper - 1 gm
Podi powder - 20 gm
Fresh coriander, chopped - 10 gm

Cook dosa until crispy on the outside.
4. Serve along with Tomato Chutney and Podi Butter on top.

Avakaya Dosa

At Novotel Vijayawada Varun, executive chef Shivaramakrishna J, says you can make an Avakaya Dosa. He shares, "Indian breakfast dishes are often labelled as heavy or carb-loaded, but that perception does not always tell the full story. Take the humble dosa, a fermented South Indian crepe made from rice and black gram. Thanks to its natural fermentation, it is light on the stomach, easier to digest and wonderfully balanced, making it a wholesome way to begin the day."

Ingredients:
Regular dosa batter 250 gm
Avakaya pickle (mango pieces slightly mashed without shell) 45 g
Pickle oil (from the jar, for enhancing flavour) 10 ml
Onion, finely chopped 20 gm
Fresh coriander leaves, chopped 10 gm
Ghee as required

Method:
1. Heat a dosa tawa or flat griddle on medium heat. Ensure the surface is hot before pouring the batter.
2. Stir the dosa batter well. Pour one ladleful onto the centre of the tawa and spread it in a circular motion to form a thin dosa.
3. Drizzle a small amount of butter or ghee around the edges and on top of the dosa.
4. When the surface begins to cook and the edges start lifting slightly, spread a thin layer of mashed
5. Avakaya pickle evenly over the dosa. Add a little pickle oil for enhanced flavour if desired.
6. Sprinkle chopped onion, green chillies, and coriander leaves evenly over the top, if using.
7. Cook on a medium flame until the base becomes crisp and golden brown.
8. Fold the dosa in half or roll it. Remove from the tawa and serve hot.
9. Serve immediately with coconut chutney (not too spicy) to balance the spice.

Red Lentil and Coriander Dosa with Avocado–Corn Filling

Experimenting with a wide variety of ingredients, Ashfaque Ali, who is the executive chef at The Westin Hyderabad Mindspace wants you to make Red Lentil and Coriander Dosa with Avocado–Corn Filling. He shares, "As chefs reinterpret traditional South Indian staples, lentils beyond rice are finding their way into dosa batters. This Red Lentil & Coriander Dosa is light, crisp, naturally gluten-free, and packed with flavour, paired with a smoky avocado–corn filling and a nutty tomato chutney."

Ingredients:

For the Red Lentil & Coriander Dosa Batter:
Red lentils (masoor dal), soaked 3–6 hours 1 cup
Poha (flattened rice), soaked 15 minutes 1/2 cup
Green chilli (adjust to taste) 1 no
Fresh coriander leaves 2–3 tbsp
Dried oregano 1/2 tsp
Salt to taste
Water as needed (for smooth batter)
Ghee for cooking

For the Avocado & Charred Corn Filling:
Sweet corn, charred 1 cup
Avocado, ripe, grilled or lightly charred 1 no
Fresh mint leaves, finely chopped 1 tbsp
Olive oil 1 tbsp
Lemon juice 1 tsp
Salt to taste

For the Tomato Chutney:
Tomatoes, medium, chopped 2 nos
Fresh grated coconut 1 tbsp
Roasted peanuts 1 tbsp
Curry leaves 6–8 nos
Salt to taste

For tempering:
Oil 1 tsp
Mustard seeds 1/4 tsp
A pinch of asafoetida (hing)
Curry leaves 4–5 nos

Method:

Prepare the Batter
1.

In 2026, the tradition of donning old rags for Holi has officially retired. As celebrations evolve, so does our understanding of what we wear to meet the flying pigments and inevitable buckets of water. The modern Holi wardrobe is no longer about disposal; it is about the breathable shield—a garment that protects the skin from toxic industrial dyes while maintaining its dignity when soaked.

The wrong fabric choice does more than just ruin an outfit, it can trap harmful chemicals against your pores or become a heavy, transparent mess the moment the first splash hits.

True festive luxury now lies in textile intelligence—choosing materials that balance airflow with opacity and structure. To help you navigate the loom, we’ve consulted fashion experts to curate the ultimate guide to Holi-ready fabrics.

The philosophy of textile intelligence

Sandhya Shah, founder of label Sandhya Shah, believes that a garment is a vessel for celebration. "Fabric carries memory. It remembers movement, touch, and joy. I have never subscribed to the idea of old clothes for Holi. If a garment is designed thoughtfully, it should return to your wardrobe with dignity," she poses.
For Shah, protection isn`t about wearing a plastic-like barrier, it is about the density of the weave. She recommends five specific textiles for the modern reveller:
1. Handwoven structured cotton: Unlike flimsy cottons that collapse and cling when wet, denser handwoven varieties hold a quiet structure. This density allows the skin to breathe while retaining opacity.
2. Balanced cotton-silk: A precise blend is key. Silk offers a soft luminosity that naturally resists pigment absorption, while cotton provides the necessary fluidity. Unlike chiffon, this blend maintains its composure under pressure.
3. Linen-cotton blends: While pure linen is breathable, it can over-absorb water. A cotton blend controls this behaviour, preventing structural collapse while allowing maximum airflow.
4. Textured jacquards and dobby weaves: Texture acts as a visual diffuser. On a dobby weave, stains do not sit flat and harsh, they break gently across the texture of the fabric, making them less noticeable.
5. Lined mid-weight Chanderi: In Shah’s collections, Chanderi is always used with intention. When mid-weight and lined, its translucency becomes controlled elegance rather than a vulnerability.

The science of the forgiving fabric

When the party is over, the real test begins with stain removal. Kirti Seth, founder of Kaseeda, notes that the most forgiving fabrics are those that release water-based stains easily. "Mid-weight cotton poplin and cotton satin are particularly dependable because they release water-based stains more easily than most synthetics and retain their structure even when damp. The real advantage lies in the weave density. A tight weave prevents pigments from penetrating deeply into the fibers, making spot cleaning far more effective and reducing the likelihood of permanent staining,” Seth shares.

Below, she outlines three kinds of fabrics to steer clear from this Holi:

1. Synthetics (polyester): These often trap oily pigments, making stains nearly permanent.
2. Silk, viscose and rayon: These delicate materials are vulnerable to watermarking and can lose their finish entirely after moisture exposure.
3. Dry clean only labels: In an environment of water and heat, natural fibres with pre-shrunk, colourfast treatments are far more reliable.

If someone intends to wear the outfit again, the care label matters just as much as the fabric itself. Seth suggests looking for machine washable (cold), colorfast, and pre-shrunk. These details indicate the garment has been treated for durability and longevity.

Beyond white: Solving the transparency trap

While white is the classic blank canvas for Holi, it is also the highest maintenance. Seth suggests moving toward softer tones like ivory, ecru, and bone.
"Bright white has timeless appeal, but it is also the most unforgiving option. Lighter shades like Ivory, ecru, and bone provide the same minimalist look but offer greater depth and opacity. Bright white reflects light intensely and becomes sheer faster than expected. By choosing a bone or ecru shade in a textured finish like a self-stripe or dobby weave, you significantly reduce the risk of the garment becoming see-through when damp,” Seth explains.

The GSM myth

Many people believe that a higher GSM (grams per square metre) ensures quality. However, Seth clarifies that GSM measures weight, not density. “A heavy fabric with a loose weave can still become transparent. For Holi, the goal is medium weight with a tight weave and minimal stretch to prevent the garment from growing and pulling at stress points when wet,” she elaborates.
The stress test: Identifying common pitfalls

Vatsala Kalani, co-founder of Shop Mauve, emphasises that comfort and confidence are inseparable during high-energy celebrations.

She identifies three common mistakes that lead to discomfort disasters:
1. Chiffon and georgette: These fabrics may look pretty and flowy, but once wet, they cling to the body and can turn sheer. They also tear easily when pulled or caught during playful moments.
2. Heavy denim: While these may seem sturdy, they absorb water slowly and then become heavy and uncomfortable. Wet denim in particular can restrict movement and take hours to dry.
3. Ultra-thin white cotton: Cotton is breathable, but ultra-thin white cotton can turn transparent once soaked. It also absorbs colour quickly and stains deeply.

The home stress test: Kalani suggests holding your fabric against the light and misting it with water. If it sticks to your skin or becomes sheer immediately, it isn`t Holi-friendly.

Performance versus nature

In 2026, we are seeing a rise in active utility wear for festivals. Kalani weighs the pros and cons of modern blends versus organic options:

Moisture-wicking synthetics
These are designed to pull sweat away from the skin and dry faster which makes them practical for long hours outdoors. However, not all synthetics are equal. Poor quality polyester can trap heat and sometimes irritate sensitive skin, especially when mixed with colour and sweat.

Organic cotton
The gold standard for sensitive skin. It allows for superior air circulation and reduces friction, though it stays damp longer than synthetic blends.

Silhouette as protection
Finally, the cut of your garment can be as protective as the fabric itself. Kalani advocates for:

Oversised fits: These create an internal micro-climate of airflow and prevent the fabric from stretching across the body (which increases transparency).
Layered looks: A relaxed shirt over a tank or a structured co-ord set adds a secondary layer of security.
Avoiding body-hugging cuts: In thin fabrics, tight silhouettes highlight areas of vulnerability the moment they are soaked.

The essential fabric cheat sheet

According to experts, your Holi wardrobe should function as a breathable shield. Here is the definitive guide to choosing textiles that balance style, safety, and longevity:
1. Cotton-silk blends: Best for resisting deep stains as the silk content provides low pigment absorption and a soft luminosity.
2. Structured cotton: Best for maintaining dignity when wet, as the high density and tight weave ensure maximum opacity.
3. Linen-cotton blends: Best for long, hot outdoor celebrations, offering high breathability without the structural collapse of pure linen.
4. Synthetics (polyester/nylon): Avoid entirely as these carry a high stain risk as they trap oily dyes and can irritate sensitive skin.

Actor Sonu Sood and his son Ayaan, in collaboration with PETA India and People for Cattle in India, gifted the temple a life-size robotic elephant named Airavatham to ensure that sacred rituals no longer require the suffering of live animals.

The three-meter-tall fiberglass creation was unveiled on Monday by B S Reddy, Chief General Manager of the Ordnance Clothing Factory, amid the rhythmic beats of Chenda Melam and Nadaswaram.

Weighing 500 kg and standing on a mobile wheelbase, the mechanical tusker can shake its head, swish its tail, and spray water, providing a realistic experience for devotees without the safety risks or ethical concerns associated with captive elephants.

Sood, known for his philanthropic efforts, noted that divinity shines brightest when devotion and kindness walk together.

His son Ayaan, a PETA India Compassionate Youth Award winner, emphasised that the initiative allows real elephants to remain with their families in the jungle.

This donation marks the 21st robotic elephant deployed by PETA India across the country and the second such installation in Tamil Nadu.

Temple Chairman S S Murugan welcomed the move, stating that the shrine has formally committed to never owning or hiring live animals.

There are tons of unexpected reunions at Holi parties, sudden plans, and colors flying through the air. "Bura na mano, Holi hai" describes the real essence of the day, but Indian daters think that, leaving everything aside, this free pass for the day should be slowly removed from the Holi narrative.

In fact, according to a survey by Indian dating app, QuackQuack, nearly 48 per cent of young daters are embracing a consent-first interaction and dating style to counter the rampant use of "bura na mano" during this festival of colours. The app`s Founder and CEO, Ravi Mittal, commented, "Respect matters more than spontaneity right now. Moreover, how we celebrate festivals reflects how society is evolving. Today`s daters want fun without making others uncomfortable; consent is no longer perceived as a limitation but a necessity. Every year, we see new dating trends around every major festival; this year`s trend shows how young daters are prioritizing trust, boundaries, and the comfort of their matches."

The study was done among 11,000 daters ranging between 20 and 35 from metros, suburbs and rural parts of India. The findings are based on responses from dating app users active for six months or more. The survey examined dating behaviour around the festival and changing expectations.

Colours, consent, and chemistry

The biggest cultural shift noted this Holi is how attraction and attractiveness are being redefined. Grand gestures, impulsive messages, and spontaneous matching once dominated the festival of colors in the digital space, but now, slow and calculated connections and respectful behaviour carry a stronger emotional appeal. 33&#37 of daters between 25 and 35 shared that matches who checked in on boundaries, comfort, and asked before moving on to deeper and more personal conversations were perceived as more emotionally mature and relationship material. 6 out of 10 users who met their match IRL at pre-Holi parties disclosed that they asked for consent before applying color. They also mentioned something very important: consent has moved from being a rule to a love language, and that makes a huge difference in how seeking permission is perceived.

Verified vibes only

Holi comes with slight safety concerns, especially for women. Whether it is unwanted interactions or bold advances, the survey report shows 6 in 10 women have felt unsafe IRL around this time. For the same reason, QuackQuack reports seeing a spike in traffic, with female users preferring online platforms over offline encounters. 38&#37 of women from Tier 1, 2, and 3 cities said they prefer virtual dates over meeting in person during the festival of colors. Niharika (28) from Delhi said, "It`s not like I don`t trust my match, I don`t trust the rest of the people on the street. Virtual dates are my go-to around this time of the year. It keeps me connected to my match, and I don`t need to compromise on my safety either."

Festival of soft launches

From the festival of color to the festival of soft launches, Holi has come a long way. 28&#37 of daters between 20 and 30 shared that they skipped Valentine`s Day and picked Holi as the perfect time to soft-launch their relationship in a more desi style.

Healing Holi-ng

Gen Z and Millennial daters from metros and suburbs are looking at the festival not only as a celebration but also as an emotional reset point. Unlike a few years ago, when Holi was about random flirting and catching fleeting emotions, 31&#37 of daters are using the occasion to consciously let go of past baggage and build intentional connections with matches who show long-term potential.

The study surveyed a sample of 1,500 individuals from both tier 1 and tier 2 cities around India to assess how AI is changing dating, emotional connection, and infidelity in the modern Indian relationship. What was revealed is the huge gap between behaviours and beliefs. Overall, the results demonstrate how quickly AI has become viewed as an intimate partner. Approximately 63 per cent of survey respondents stated that they had used conversational AI as a coach for enhancing their seduction methods, improving their dating profile, analysing what they have shared with people they are interested in, and gathering information to conduct a successful first date.

Outside of flirting, AI has now reached into the most personal parts of people`s lives because approximately 60 per cent of those surveyed used it to provide sexual counselling and/or therapy-related advice. Additionally, approximately 64 per cent used AI to provide assistance for dealing with personal relationship challenges with their partner or spouse. The change is not limited to simply asking for advice.

Rather, for many people in India, AI has replaced their spouse as their sexual partner. The study indicated that about 54 per cent of those surveyed have set up a virtual AI partner with whom to have sexual interactions, while 58 per cent report having created a virtual partner for genuine emotional and romantic interactions, such as exchanging kisses and cuddles. In addition, 52 per cent of those surveyed have created erotic materials using AI, and 49 per cent have created deepfakes using celebrities or known individuals; furthermore, no major gender differences were discovered in any of these cases.

One of the most shocking discoveries is that the feeling of being alone drives a large majority of individuals to adopt artificial intelligence. Of those who answered the question about their romantic life, 92 per cent are content, and 89 per cent are sexually satisfied, however, 57 per cent report feelings of "loneliness", which is a significant indicator that many people are seeking AI as a form of emotional companionship. In addition, the use of AI for both emotional and sexual interaction has also resulted in addiction; in fact, 46 per cent of respondents indicated they have been affected at a similar level to the addictive nature of pornography.

At the same time, social stigma still exists regarding AI and sexual exchanges. More than 60 per cent of individuals in India consider sexual exchanges with an AI to be cheating on their partner, and almost 70 per cent report that they would be shocked to find out that their partner was engaging in erotic interaction with AI.

Additionally, almost 70 per cent of individuals do not feel comfortable sharing their AI chat history with their partner, and both genders show this uncomfortable feeling, with women exhibiting a larger discomfort than men. This data indicates a growing disparity between private experimentation with AI for sexual purposes, and the morality of public attitudes.

In India, divorce rates are among the lowest globally, as arranged marriages make up the largest number of marriages; and although there appears to be a strong sense of marital stability, technology is redefining how couples interact. An AI is no longer simply an assistant to an individual, but an emotional entity within a couple`s interactions.

Sybil Shiddell, who is the country manager for Gleeden India, commented, “We see an emotional change occurring as AI becomes not just a functional tool but also a place where people can seek validation, make fantasy, or find comfort. Many people are exploring this new world in secret; feeling guilty and curious at the same time, and yet many of these people feel their partner has been unfaithful for doing the same thing. This is not really a disruptive force because of technology but instead because of emotional responses to AI. The future of partnership and relationships will be determined by the way people establish boundaries, are honest with each other, and build intimacy in a time when AI will play an important role. As the Gleeden–IPSOS study indicates, it is not if AI will change our relationships, but in what way, how much will be affected, and how will these changes affect our emotional connections?”
