The complainant, who operates Anmol Yogesh General Trading LLC in Dubai, entered into a business deal with the accused in June 2025 through an online platform.

Jatin Bhadeka, an accused

The duo, who positioned themselves as reliable suppliers, allegedly promised a bulk supply of Amul ghee and Lifebuoy soap at competitive export rates.
Trusting the deal, the complainant transferred a total of Rs 64,00,402 ($72,420) in multiple installments between September and October 2025. However, after taking the money, the accused — Jatin Bhadeka and his father, Bharat Bhadeka, linked to Dhruv International (HUF) — went absconding.

A check on an international tracking platform showed the container located in Turkey, casting doubt on the legitimacy of the shipment.

The fraud

According to the complaint, the accused attempted to maintain credibility by sharing photos and WhatsApp messages claiming goods were ready but later claimed that the shipment was damaged in transit. The accused also issued a cancellation letter; however, despite cancelling the order, there was no refund made.

Complaint filed

Accusing the father-son duo of forgery, cheating, and financial fraud, the Dubai-based exporter registered a police complainant in December 2025. “Based on the complaint of the victim, a case under the relevant section of BNS was registered at Charkop police station,” said an officer.

For months, crates of the freshest and most expensive fruits vanished overnight, only to reappear 10 km away in Mira Road, where the accused allegedly sold them in plain sight from his own stall — until a trail of complaints by multiple local vendors and one auto-rickshaw led police straight to him.

The accused, Ravi Chaurasia, seen on CCTV during one of the alleged late-night fruit thefts in Kandivali East

Modus operandi

Police said Chaurasia would target roadside stalls late at night, break them open, and steal large quantities of high-value fruits.
>> Theft carried out during late-night hours
>> Expensive fruits picked
>> Stock transported using an auto-rickshaw
>> Goods sold the next day

Approaching the stall: The accused, Ravi Chaurasia, is seen walking towards a fruit stall in Kandivali East during the alleged late-night theft; (centre) Attempting entry: The accused is seen trying to open the fruit stall

The confession

During interrogation, Chaurasia told police he transported the stolen fruits in his friend’s auto-rickshaw to Mira Road, where he set up a stall and sold them for profit.

How the case unfolded

One of the complainants, a fruit vendor from Ramnagar in Kandivali East, reported a theft on the night of March 31, 2026.
>> Stock worth Rs 12,000 was stolen from a handcart parked outside a jewellery shop
>> The fruits were covered and secured overnight
>> The entire stock was found missing the next morning
>> Police said a similar theft had taken place earlier in the same area, where fruits worth nearly Rs 72,000 were stolen

Leaving the spot: The accused is seen walking away from the fruit stall after the alleged theft, as captured on CCTV

From driver to repeat offender

Investigators found that Chaurasia previously worked as an auto-rickshaw driver before starting a Chinese food stall in Mira Road.
It was during this time that he came into contact with another individual involved in fruit theft.
>> Initially sourced stolen fruits from a contact
>> Began selling them for profit
>> Later started committing thefts himself
>> Police said Chaurasia conducted late-night reconnaissance in an auto-rickshaw along with an accomplice, who is currently absconding, before targeting stalls.

Police action

>> A team led by API Yogesh Raut tracked the accused by identifying the auto-rickshaw used in the crimes.
>> The vehicle became the key lead, helping police trace Chaurasia through CCTV footage and local inputs.
>> He has since confessed to the offences, police said.

Police said the seventh accused is allegedly linked to a larger syndicate involved in the supply of narcotics. He was taken into custody late at night and will be produced before a court.

Authorities are continuing the search for the main accused, believed to be the key figure behind the distribution of drugs at large-scale events such as concerts and parties.

Investigators said fresh details are emerging as the probe progresses into the deaths of two students who allegedly consumed drugs during a music concert held at the NESCO Centre in Goregaon.

The investigation has revealed that drug consumption was not limited to before the event, but continued during the live concert as well. Police found that narcotics were transported from Kalyan to Mumbai through couriers, including porters, who then facilitated distribution among students.

According to officials, a consignment of MDMA, commonly known as yellow pills, ecstasy or Molly, was supplied a day before the event on April 10.

Mumbai NESCO concert tragedy: Students bought four MDMA pills for Rs 6,400

Police have also identified two arrested accused, Anand Patel and Pratik Pandey, as key figures in what they described as a major drug supply network operating in Mumbai. Both know each other and have allegedly been involved in such activities for several years.

Investigators said Patel supplied MDMA before the concert, while Pandey handled its distribution among students. Police have also named another accused, Vinod Jain, who was reportedly aware that attendees were carrying drugs into the venue but allegedly allowed entry regardless.

The students who died had reportedly purchased four MDMA pills for Rs 6,400, officers said. The investigation further found that drugs were delivered to Pandey at his hostel in the Charni Road area, from where he later distributed them among his circle.

According to police, Pandey, a first-year MBA student, had easy access to fellow students, which enabled him to distribute narcotics without raising suspicion. He had reportedly been staying in a hostel in Mumbai, though both he and Patel are originally from Kalyan.

Officers said Patel had earlier supplied drugs to the same group on previous occasions as well. Some of the students had allegedly attended events in areas such as Bandra Kurla Complex in October 2025, where drug consumption was also reported.

Police further stated that Pandey gave four MDMA pills to the two deceased persons in exchange for Rs 6,400 and distributed the remaining pills to other members of the group.

In her statement to police, a female student who is undergoing treatment said she had consumed a yellow MDMA pill during the concert. She recalled that after taking the substance, everyone was dancing, but she had no memory of the events that followed.

Multiple police teams are continuing to investigate the case, with efforts underway to trace the wider network involved in the supply and distribution of drugs linked to the incident.

The scam unfolded not in a dark alley, but through a series of persistent phone calls and a malicious WhatsApp link sent to her while she was at her desk.

The Rs 73 bait

The ordeal began on March 27 for Madhura Manoj Tatkare, who works in the Housing Department at Mantralaya. While attending to her official duties, she received a call from a man identifying himself as “Shashikant Verma” from Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL). The caller claimed that her gas connection was on the verge of being disconnected due to an unpaid bill.

When Tatkare checked a file sent to her via WhatsApp titled “MGL GAS BILL Update.apk”, she noticed the amount mentioned was just Rs 73. Despite her protests that her connection was new and that she had not yet received any bill, the caller insisted that the digital update was mandatory to avoid disconnection.

The digital siphon

The trap turned out to be a classic malware scam. Under pressure from the caller, Tatkare followed instructions to navigate her phone settings and entered her consumer ID and debit card details into the fake application. The app appeared to be “loading,” masking the backend theft occurring in real time while she was still on the call.

She realised something was wrong only after reaching her residence in Lalbaug. Upon checking her ICICI Bank account, she discovered that the supposed “MGL bill” had resulted in a massive financial loss.

Within just seven minutes - between 4:53 pm and 5:00 pm - three transactions of Rs 82,906, Rs 25,004, and Rs 3,500 were carried out, wiping her account almost entirely and leaving a balance of just Rs 224.

The accused, identified as Ridham Panchal, was taken into custody by Dindoshi Police following complaints against him.

From gym trainer to `divine healer`

According to the police, Panchal had reportedly been working as a gym trainer before claiming that he possessed divine powers. He allegedly told people that he could solve personal and family problems, remove evil spirits and control negative events through “divine energy”.

The police said that Panchal claimed to be possessed by “Bhairav Dev” and conducted late-night rituals and exorcisms.

He allegedly asked followers to bring unusual items such as goat liver, black cloth, sesame seeds, cremation ashes, lemons, liquor and cigarettes. Some of these items were reportedly consumed, while others were disposed of in public places.

Fear and intimidation among locals

Police said the accused created fear in the locality by warning residents of serious consequences if they did not follow his instructions.

During a public ritual event earlier this month, he allegedly claimed divine possession and performed exorcisms. When questioned, he is said to have threatened locals with harm.

Residents file complaint

Interestingly, none of the people who visited Panchal for help filed complaints. Instead, more than 60 locals came together to oppose his activities.

They accused him of promoting superstition, disturbing public peace and spreading fear. A written complaint was submitted, prompting police action.

Officials said they have received photographs and video footage of the rituals as part of the investigation.

The complaint also stated that Panchal had been making such claims for nearly two years.

The arrest

Following the complaint, Dindoshi Police arrested Panchal and produced him before a local court that remanded him to police custody until April 19.

The party has also urged authorities not to allow the artists to leave the country until the investigation is completed.

An MNS delegation led by Milind Ghag met the Additional Commissioner of Police (North Region) to press their demands.

The party’s student wing, led by Amit Thackeray, stated that it believes the performers should be questioned to determine whether they had any role in the incident.

A Mid-Day report identifying him as a fugitive helped confirm details, prompting coordination with Mumbai Police

In a twist straight out of a crime thriller, a wanted fraud accused in a multi-crore loan scam was caught not through a planned manhunt, but after a drunken brawl at a Delhi hotel exposed his identity. A quick online search by the police, which threw up a mid-day report identifying him as a fugitive, ultimately led to the arrest of Amol Thakre, who had been on the run after allegedly duping victims across Maharashtra.

How he was caught

>> Thakre, who had fled to Nepal after duping victims, recently returned to India
>> Checked into a hotel in Paharganj on April 12
>> Got into an argument with hotel staff under the influence of alcohol or drugs
>> Police called to the scene
>> Attempted to flee, caught with the help of the staff
>> Gave a false name to mislead the police

Breakthrough moment

>> Police checked his ID and grew suspicious
>> An officer searched his name online
>> A mid-day report identified him as a wanted accused
>> Delhi Police alerted Charkop Police

The accused in police custody in Delhi. Pics/By Special Arrangement

Transfer and custody

>> PSI Abhimanyu Dhande confirmed identity
>> Under the direction of DCP Sandeep Jadhav (Zone 11) and senior inspector Vinayak Chauhan
>> The team travelled to Delhi and took custody of Thakre, who was brought to Mumbai and produced in court
>> Remanded to police custody till April 18
>> PSI Abhimanyu Dhande said, “The mid-day report played a crucial role in alerting the Delhi Police, leading to Thakre’s arrest. The number of victims could rise.”

The scam model

Charkop police had earlier uncovered a racket in which hundreds across the state were allegedly duped on the pretext of securing loans under NABARD schemes. An agent, Shrikant Gavde, has been arrested. He allegedly sourced clients on a commission basis.

Big money, zero loans

Police said:
>> Victims applied for loans ranging fromRs 25 lakh to Rs 5 crore and paid to 30 per cent commission in advance
>> No loans were ever sanctioned
>> To sustain the racket, Thakre occasionally refunded money to select victims, creating trust and attracting more targets.

Network and accomplices

Operated through agents across Maharashtra, offering 10 per cent commission
Gavde, 37, was one such agent

More suspects identified:
Vikas Singh (chartered accountant)
Abhay Singh (land verification handler)
Avinash (full identity unknown)
Funds collected from victims were allegedly routed to Vikas Singh, who remains untraced

While one accused has been arrested, the mastermind remains at large.

The case came to light after a victim was cheated of Rs 5 lakh with a promise of setting up a dairy farm under a scheme. Following a complaint, an investigation was launched and Shrikant Gavde, 37, a resident of Charkop, was arrested on March 17.

Role of accused

Shrikant Gavde was previously employed as a manager in a multinational bank but later came in contact with the absconding mastermind, identified as Amol Thakre. Officials believe the Gavde is merely a middleman, and several such agents may be active across different districts.

Cases across Maharashtra

The accused not only operated in Mumbai but also carried out similar frauds in various districts in the state. Over the past five years, they allegedly cheated hundreds of people. Police have so far recovered around 280 files during the investigation, indicating fraud of over R40 lakh.

The mastermind

Amol Thakre, the alleged mastermind behind the fraud, posed as a government employee and lured agents like Gavde by offering commissions. They would promise loans ranging from R25 lakh to R5 crore and demand an advance commission of around 10 per cent. Gavde would collect the money in his bank account, withdraw it in cash, and hand it over to Thakre.

What are the schemes under NABARD?

The NABARD scheme offers loan options to support rural development and agricultural projects

The National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) is India`s apex development financial institution. The NABARD scheme offers various loan options to support rural development and agricultural projects. These loans cater to farmers, rural entrepreneurs, and infrastructure development.

Modus operandi

The accused targeted people seeking loans for small-scale businesses such as dairy farms, poultry, and other ventures. They promised to secure government-subsidised loans under NABARD schemes and collected documents from victims. To gain trust, the accused would initiate fake registration processes for required licenses and approvals in the victims’ names. However, police said that not a single victim has reported receiving any loan.

Investigation underway

Police have written to the government departments concerned seeking verification of the claims. Preliminary findings suggest that no loans were ever sanctioned to the victims. Out of the 280 files recovered, 95 are currently in police possession, while Gavde has informed investigators that the remaining files were handed over to Thakre.

The police have arrested the 29-year-old accused in connection with the brutal attack that took place at his house in the Dhokali area in the early hours of Monday, an official said.

Drinking addiction turns fatal

The accused, Mangesh Rajkumar Sahib, frequently argued with his mother, Sangeeta Sahib, over his drinking habit, he added.

“The accused would regularly demand money from his mother to purchase alcohol. On Monday, when she refused, Mangesh lost his temper and allegedly stabbed her multiple times with a knife,” the official said, quoting the FIR.

According to police, an argument broke out between the teenager and his relatives—his uncle, Prabhakar Bhalme (50), and cousin Ritesh (24)—during the procession.

In a sudden escalation, the suspect allegedly attacked both men with a knife in a fit of rage, killing them on the spot.

The tribunal ruled that the victim had entered a restricted area without safety gear, contributing to the fatal incident.

MACT member K P Shrikhande observed that although the death of Kiran Lahanu Korade was tragic, the family failed to establish rash or negligent operation by the crane driver, the news agency reported.

The order, passed on April 8 and released on Monday, stated that the claim lacked sufficient evidence to hold the operator responsible.

Incident occurred in restricted zone

According to the PTI, the tribunal noted that the accident took place at a container freight station (CFS) in Dronagiri, Uran, within a designated “no man’s zone”.

Korade, employed as a dock clerk, was found to have entered a prohibited area at the facility operated by Seabird Marine Services Pvt. Ltd. when the accident occurred on 3 May 2019.

Safety warnings ignored

According to the tribunal, the deceased had ignored clear safety instructions, including a warning sign on the crane advising individuals to maintain a distance of at least 10 metres, as per the PTI.

It also noted that crane operators are typically focused on lifting and stacking heavy containers at height, making it difficult to notice unauthorised persons on the ground.

Insurance company not liable

The tribunal further ruled that New India Assurance Co. Ltd. was not liable to pay compensation due to a breach of policy conditions, reported the PTI.

It was found that the crane driver did not possess the required authorisation on his driving licence, invalidating the insurance claim.

The court acknowledged that the premises owner had already paid Rs 31 lakh to the victim’s wife as a full and final settlement.

However, it clarified that such a settlement does not prevent a claimant from seeking statutory compensation. Despite this, the absence of negligence led the tribunal to declare the petition unmaintainable, the news agency reported.

The devotees were made to pay Rs 3,000 for "quick darshan", while the stipulated process involves buying a Rs 200 donation `darshan pass`, he said.

"The incident took place on Saturday with two devotees who had come from Panchvati. They had taken the Rs 200 pass but the accused told them their turn would come after 4-5 hours due to the long queue. The accused took Rs 3000 and ensured the devotees got darshan in 10 minutes," the official said, reported PTI.

Based on a complaint by the devotees, since they were not given receipts for the amount, Gotiram Manaji Peher and Abhishek Kadlag were booked under Bharatiya Naya Sanhita for cheating and other offences, the Trimbakeshwar police station official said, reported PTI.

82-year-old woman cheated of Rs 73.3 lakh in `digital arrest` scam

In another case, an 82-year-old woman from Maharashtra`s Thane district was allegedly duped of Rs 73.3 lakh in a "digital arrest" scam after fraudsters posing as law enforcement officials threatened to implicate her in a fake terror case, police said on Sunday, reported PTI.

The scammers allegedly intimidated the complainant, a resident of Kalyan, by claiming that her mobile phone number was linked to a Pakistani soldier involved in the Pahalgam terror attack, an official said, reported PTI.

He said that the accused coerced the woman into making massive bank transfers over four days to clear her name in the case.

The unidentified accused contacted the octogenarian from multiple mobile phone numbers between April 6 and 10, and she lodged a complaint with the Mahatma Phule Chowk police station on Friday after realising she had been duped, he said, reported PTI.

"Under the pretext of `verifying` her bank transactions to clear her name from the alleged terror case, the accused coerced the complainant into carrying out multiple online money transfers," he said, reported PTI.

The complainant followed instructions sent to her on WhatsApp, transferring a total of Rs 73.3 lakh into various bank accounts provided by the scammers, the official said.

While the police have identified five local mobile phone numbers used in the crime, a probe is underway to ascertain the identities and addresses of the accused, he said.

The arrests have exposed a suspected gang targeting victims at resorts and lodges.

According to police, the accused women are habitual offenders with multiple criminal cases registered against them under the Mira-Bhayandar, Vasai-Virar Police Commissionerate.

How the crime unfolded

The complainant, a 43-year-old bank manager, stated that he came in contact with one of the accused, identified as Hani Thakur alias Bimaladevi Shravankumar Singh, 30, through a social networking app in July 2025. The two began chatting and later exchanged phone numbers.

On August 17, 2025, they met at Andheri railway station and went to a restaurant and bar, where they consumed alcohol and grew closer. The woman later suggested a trip to Gorai for a night stay.

On August 30, 2025, the complainant booked a room at a resort in Gorai. He met the woman at Borivli station, where she was accompanied by another woman, identified as Ruth Lucas Naidu, 28.

The trio then proceeded to the resort.

That night, they drank and ordered food. The complainant alleged that he fell asleep around 10 pm, after which both women fled the room.

When he woke up the next morning, both women were missing. Upon checking, he found several valuables stolen, worth Rs 4.20 lakh in total.

Cop speak

Under the guidance of DCP Sandeep Jadhav Zone XI, senior inspector Mahesh Nivatkar PSI Bharat Poul began the investigation. “The duo are professional criminals involved in multiple cases of targeting men through social media, intoxicating them, and robbing valuables at hotels and resorts.

The duo were booked and arrested today they remanded in judicial custody,” said an officer from Gorai police station.

Fear of stigma

The victim initially refrained from filing a complaint due to fear of social stigma. However, in March 2026, he came across social media reports stating that the same women had been arrested in similar cheating and theft cases at Kashimira and Mandvi police stations.

The judgment, delivered on April 8 and made available on Friday, stated that the prosecution failed to prove the case beyond reasonable doubt.

The 48-year-old accused, Kamal Chandrakant Kanoja, a resident of Vikramgad in Palghar district, was charged with pouring kerosene on Amita Gotarna and setting her on fire on October 27, 2020 that allegedly led to her death, according to the PTI.

The deceased was her would-be daughter-in-law, the news agency reported.

The victim, who lived with the accused family, suffered 72 per cent burns and later died at Nashik Civil Hospital.

Contradictory dying declarations

The case largely depended on two dying declarations made by the victim. One statement, recorded by police, implicated the accused. However, another declaration recorded by a magistrate stated that the incident was accidental and mentioned that “nobody was present” at the time.

The court observed that these conflicting versions weakened the prosecution’s case significantly.

Concerns over witness influence and procedure

The defence argued that the dying declarations may have been influenced by interested witnesses, including the victim’s father and brother.

The court also noted that the medical officer who allegedly certified the victim fit to give a statement was not examined during the trial.

Evidence found insufficient

The judge further observed that chemical analysis reports did not conclusively link the accused to the crime. The possibility of the victim being influenced could not be ruled out, the court said.

Concluding that the prosecution had failed to establish guilt beyond reasonable doubt, the court ordered the immediate release of the accused woman.

Thane court acquits eight accused of attempting to murder cop in 2016

Meanwhile, in an another case, a court in Thane district of Maharashtra has acquitted eight men accused of attempting to murder a cop in 2016, citing the victim’s inability to identify the assailants and key prosecution witnesses turning hostile, PTI reported.

In her judgment delivered on April 6, Additional Sessions Judge V L Bhosale granted the benefit of the doubt to the accused, observing that the prosecution had failed to prove its case beyond a reasonable doubt. A copy of the order was made available on Wednesday.

According to the prosecution, police constable Bhaskar Sonavane was assaulted with sticks and beer bottles outside a bar in the city’s Upvan area on April 21, 2016.

As per the news agency, the attack allegedly stemmed from a dispute between the hotel management and a customer named Kamlesh, whose brother Arun reportedly led a group of 10-15 people to the spot.

Sonavane, who was at the location to meet an informant, suffered a skull fracture and brain injuries in the assault, the court was told during the trial.

According to PTI, the eight accused had been facing charges of attempted murder under the Indian Penal Code.

Victim fails to identify his attackers

The court noted that the constable was unable to identify any of the accused as the assailants, as the incident took place at night, and he lost consciousness after being struck on the head.

Additionally, hotel partner Rajesh Shetty and manager Naveen Gouda, the original complainant, turned hostile, the judge observed.

“Having regard to all the evidence on record, I find that the prosecution has failed to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the accused persons committed the offences,” the court said, acquitting all eight accused, PTI reported.
