A modern Gurukul-inspired vision

Vantara University is designed as a modern-day Gurukul, combining traditional Indian knowledge systems with modern science and research.

The focus is on animal welfare, veterinary medicine and conservation science. The university will train future professionals to care for wildlife and address global environmental challenges.

Anant Ambani said the idea comes from a personal journey and a need to improve animal care systems. He said, “The future of conservation will depend on how we prepare minds and institutions to serve life with compassion, knowledge, and skill.”

He also referred to the inspiration from ancient Nalanda University and the Sanskrit phrase “A no bhadraaḥ kratavo yantu visvataḥ”, meaning “let noble thoughts come to us from all directions.”

Symbolic foundation ceremony in Jamnagar

The foundation ceremony followed Hindu traditions and brought together academics, scientists, conservation experts, and public figures, including Anant Ambani’s teachers and mentors.

A symbolic part of the event included placing soil, water, and stones collected from different ecological regions across India such as forests, grasslands, wetlands, deserts and Himalayan regions. This represented India’s biodiversity and natural heritage.

Two Bijoliya sandstone pieces, linked to ancient geological formations associated with Nalanda, were also used in the design to symbolise India’s knowledge legacy.

What the university will offer

Vantara University will bring multiple disciplines under one academic system, combining classroom learning with real-world conservation work.

Courses will include:

1. Wildlife medicine and surgery
2. Animal nutrition
3. Behavioural sciences
4. Genetics and epidemiology
5. One Health studies
6. Conservation policy
7. Animal care environment design

The university will offer undergraduate, postgraduate, fellowship and specialised programmes. Scholarships will also be provided for students from economically and socially weaker backgrounds.

Learning through real-world conservation work

The university will use Vantara’s existing wildlife rescue and rehabilitation work as a learning base. Students will gain practical training through fieldwork and scientific research.

It will also integrate in-situ (natural habitats) and ex-situ (care centres) conservation methods to improve long-term wildlife protection. The aim is to combine science, compassion, and practical experience to create professionals who can handle complex wildlife and ecosystem challenges.

Infrastructure, global collaborations and scholarships

The university will have advanced academic buildings, clinical facilities and a residential campus. It will also collaborate with international institutions and focus on research-driven learning.

The focus will be on applied research in animal health, conservation systems, and ecosystem management.

The initiative also introduces programmes like the “Vantara University Founding Fellows” and “Every Life Matters” scholarships. Officials said the goal is to build not just an educational institution, but a platform that strengthens compassionate conservation and long-term wildlife protection.

Vantara is a wildlife rescue, rehabilitation, healthcare, and conservation initiative based in Jamnagar, Gujarat. It focuses on advanced veterinary care, species recovery, conservation breeding, and long-term animal welfare.

The organisation is also working toward global standards in wildlife healthcare and conservation science.

AAP leadership had removed Chadha from key post

Earlier, on April 2, the AAP removed Chadha from his position as deputy leader of the party in the Rajya Sabha. The party has accused him of not being vocal enough against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Centre in Parliament, and instead focusing on what it described as "soft PR", according to the PTI.

Chadha has strongly denied the allegations, calling them false. He has said that his role in Parliament is to raise public issues rather than create disruption or political confrontation.

He maintains that his focus has always been on legislative work and representing citizens’ concerns.

Silenced, not defeated: Raghav Chadha 

Following his removal as Deputy Leader of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in the Rajya Sabha, Raghav Chadha on Friday said that he has been “silenced, not defeated”. 

Taking to X, Chadha shared a video message for his party with a short line saying, “Silenced, not defeated. My message to the aam aadmi."

In the video message, he questioned the decision to restrict his voice in Parliament, asking whether raising issues concerning the public had become a crime.

Chadha alleged that his party had communicated with the Secretariat to prevent him from speaking in Parliament. He expressed concern over being denied opportunities to raise matters affecting citizens.

“Whenever I get a chance, I speak about issues related to the people. Why should anyone stop me?” he asked.

Continued social media response

Since his removal from the post, Chadha has been active on social media, posting videos and messages highlighting his parliamentary contributions. His recent posts indicate that he is pushing back strongly against criticism from within the party.

The developments point to continuing internal differences within the AAP over parliamentary strategy and communication.

According to the reports, the victim, Purohit Devkrishna (28), was found dead at his home in Bhopal on April 7. His wife, Priyanka Purohit, initially told police that unidentified burglars had broken into the house, tied her up, and stolen valuables worth around Rs 3.5 lakh.

She further reportedly claimed that her husband was killed while trying to confront the intruders.

Frequently made disparaging remarks about complexion

As per a news report, Purohit`s relative alleged that Priyanka frequently made disparaging remarks about his complexion. She claimed that Priyanka would often belittle her husband, saying she deserved a more attractive partner than the dark-skinned Devkrishna.

Wife and lover held for orchestrating the killing

Devkrishna’s wife, Priyanka Purohit, initially told police that unidentified burglars had entered the house, tied her up, and stolen valuables worth around Rs 3.5 lakh. She claimed her husband was killed while trying to confront the intruders.

However, investigators later found inconsistencies in her statements.

As the investigation progressed, police grew suspicious of Priyanka’s account. Her phone records reportedly showed frequent communication with a man identified as Kamlesh Purohit, a 32-year-old resident of Rajgarh, according to the PTI.

The police officials stated the connection played a key role in uncovering the alleged conspiracy.

Contract killing angle emerges

Police said Priyanka and Kamlesh allegedly conspired to kill Devkrishna and hired a contract killer named Surendra for Rs 1 lakh to carry out the murder, reported the PTI.

The victim was attacked with a sharp weapon, resulting in multiple injuries that led to his death.

Arrests made, shooter absconding

Both Priyanka and Kamlesh have been arrested following the investigation. However, the alleged contract killer is still on the run, and efforts are underway to trace him.

Police said the case was solved within 36 hours of the murder after sustained interrogation and analysis of evidence.

Background of strained relationship

Investigators also revealed that Priyanka was married to Devkrishna when she was around 15 years old. After reaching adulthood, she moved into her matrimonial home, but the relationship reportedly remained strained, leading to frequent disputes.

The officials said that further investigation is continuing to establish the full chain of events and identify all those involved.

According to the Kremlin, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered the pause in fighting late Thursday. The ceasefire comes more than a week after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had already called for a holiday truce. The announcement also comes at a time when US-led efforts to restart peace talks remain stalled.

The Easter truce offers a brief pause in one of the world’s longest and most destructive conflicts. But with deep mistrust, ongoing fighting and stalled diplomacy, the chances of lasting peace remain uncertain.

A short pause in a long war! What does it include?

The Kremlin said the ceasefire will run from 4:00 pm (1300 GMT) on Saturday until the end of Sunday, lasting about 32 hours.

Russian officials said Defence Minister Andrei Belousov and military chief Valery Gerasimov have been instructed to “cease hostilities in all directions during this period.” The Kremlin also said, “We assume that the Ukrainian side will follow the Russian Federation’s example,” reported AFP.

Ukraine responded cautiously. President Zelenskyy said Ukraine had already supported the idea of an Easter ceasefire and would act accordingly, stating, “We proposed a ceasefire for the Easter holidays this year and will act accordingly.”

However, Russia denied any prior coordination with Ukraine or the United States on the truce.

Previous ceasefires and mistrust

This is not the first temporary pause in fighting. A similar 30-hour Easter truce was announced last year, but both sides accused each other of violating it multiple times. Ukraine reported fewer Russian airstrikes during that period, but fighting still continued on the ground.

Russia has also announced other short truces, including one during its May 9 holiday, which Ukraine strongly criticised as politically motivated.

Ukraine has repeatedly called for a long-term and unconditional ceasefire, but Russia has rejected this, saying it wants a final peace settlement instead. Kyiv, in turn, argues that Moscow is not serious about peace and instead wants Ukraine to surrender.

What is happening on the battlefield?

The fighting has continued for more than four years, but Russia’s recent advances have slowed, reported the news agency.

Reports based on military data suggest that Russian forces made almost no territorial gains last month—the slowest pace in over two years. In March, Russia reportedly captured only about 23 square kilometres along the front line.

Russia currently controls just over 19 percent of Ukraine, including territory taken during the early stages of the 2022 invasion. About seven percent, including Crimea and parts of Donbas, was already under Russian or separatist control before the war.

Peace talks remain stalled

US-led diplomatic efforts to end the war have slowed in recent months.

Earlier negotiations were held in cities like Abu Dhabi and Geneva, but talks have not progressed since late February. Both sides have shown willingness to resume discussions, but major differences remain.

One key issue is territory. Ukraine has proposed freezing the war along current front lines, while Russia insists Ukraine must give up all of Donetsk region territories currently under its control.

Another unresolved issue is control of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, which has been under Russian control since the early days of the war.

Hopes for peace remain limited!

Ukraine has said it is ready to observe the ceasefire, although public scepticism remains high. Ukraine’s foreign minister Andriy Sybiga said, “We believe that a ceasefire is the right strategy to advance diplomatic efforts,” as per AFP.

However, analysts believe the truce is unlikely to last beyond Easter. Russian analyst Konstantin Kalachev described it as “short-lived,” saying Russia is not ready to soften its demands.

Some pro-Russian commentators suggested the pause could help recover bodies and wounded soldiers from the battlefield, where drone warfare has made evacuation difficult.

The agreement aims to respond to the growing burden of diseases such as childhood obesity, Type 1 diabetes, asthma, mental health conditions, congenital heart disease and sickle cell disease. Health officials noted that early onset of these diseases can lead to long-term health problems as well as economic challenges.

The MoU was signed in the presence of several senior leaders, including honourable Health Minister Shri Prakash Abitkar and MLA Shri Nana Patole.

Senior officials from the state health system, Member of Legislative Assembly, Maharashtra, and senior leadership from the Government of Maharashtra, including Dr. Nipun Vinayak, IAS, Secretary Health, Dr. Kadambari Balkawade, IAS, Commissioner, Health Services and Mission Director, National Health Mission, Mumbai and Mr. Sanjay Singh, Chief of UNICEF Maharashtra.

AIIMS Nagpur and UNICEF roles in the initiative

Under the agreement, AIIMS Nagpur will act as a technical centre of excellence, supporting clinical expertise and guideline development.

UNICEF Maharashtra will provide strategic support by bringing together stakeholders, helping design solutions, and supporting implementation within government systems.

Dr. Prashant Joshi, Executive Director of AIIMS Nagpur, said the initiative combines clinical expertise with public health delivery to create models that can be scaled across the state.

Key focus areas and the long-term vision of the programme

The initiative will focus on strengthening childhood NCD care through several major steps: 

1. Development of evidence-based Standard Operating Protocols (SOPs) for six priority childhood NCDs: Type 1 diabetes, asthma, obesity, mental health conditions, congenital heart disease and sickle cell disease
2. Setting up paediatric NCD clinics in 10 district hospitals
3. Training and capacity building of health workers in selected districts
4. Strengthening screening and referral systems at the community level
5. Building a stronger public health system for children

Officials said the partnership is designed as a system-based approach, meaning it will improve not just treatment but also early detection, referral, and long-term care within the public health system.

UNICEF Maharashtra highlighted that the initiative focuses on integrated and equitable healthcare for children, ensuring that services reach communities more effectively.

The MoU is expected to help institutionalise childhood NCD care within Maharashtra’s public health system. It also aims to improve the state’s response to emerging child health challenges and reduce long-term disease burden among children.

As reported by news agency PTI, the resignation process was initiated to prevent removal by Parliament, popularly called `impeachment`; resignation was the only option left for the judge accused of corruption.

Justice Varma’s resignation letter, sent to the President on Thursday noted, "Your Excellency, While I do not propose to burden your august office with the reasons which have constrained me to submit this missive, it is with deep anguish that I hereby tender my resignation from the office of Judge of the Hon`ble High Court of Judicature at Allahabad, with immediate effect. It has been an honour to serve in this office," as reported by PTI. 

Earlier Justice Varma was repatriated from the Delhi High Court to the Allahabad High Court after burnt wads of currency notes were found at his official residence in New Delhi on March 14 last year.

Justice Varma will be entitled to pension by tendering his resignation

By tendering his resignation, he will be entitled to a pension. However, if he had been removed by Parliament (impeachment), he would not have been entitled to a pension and other benefits a retired judge is entitled to, officials aware of the procedure to appoint and remove Supreme Court and high court judges pointed out.

They also underlined that once a Supreme Court or high court judge resigns without giving a "prospective date", it is accepted immediately, and there is no need for it to be approved or disallowed.

If a prospective date is mentioned, the judge can withdraw the resignation before that day.

According to Article 217 of the Constitution, a high court judge "may, by writing under his hand addressed to the President, resign his office". A judge`s resignation does not require any approval. A simple resignation letter is sufficient.

A judge may give a prospective date to step down. In such cases, the judge can withdraw the resignation before the date he or she has mentioned as the last day in office.

Since Justice Varma will now become a private citizen not holding a constitutional office, the government can initiate criminal proceedings against him.

The then Chief Justice of India, Sanjiv Khanna, had written to the president and the prime minister to remove Justice Varma, mired in the cash discovery row.

Sources from PTI had earlier said that Justice Khanna`s report was based on the findings of a three-judge in-house panel that investigated the case.

Earlier, Justice Khanna had prodded Varma to resign, but he had refused. On August 12 last, the Speaker had constituted the three-member committee to probe charges against Justice Varma after admitting a multi-party notice for his removal, setting in motion the process of removal of the Allahabad High Court judge.

Supreme Court judge V Ramaswami and Calcutta High Court judge Soumitra Sen had earlier faced impeachment proceedings, but they too had resigned.

Circle Officer Ravishankar said the incident occurred when a van belonging to the Ashish English Academy was carrying around 10 children. On receiving information, police and fire brigade teams rushed to the spot and launched a rescue operation. The injured were rushed to a nearby hospital, according to the PTI.

Sources said that the condition of the injured remains serious.

Possible short circuit suspected

According to preliminary findings, the fire is suspected to have been caused by a short circuit. However, authorities have said a detailed investigation is underway to determine the exact cause, as per the PTI.

The vehicle has been seized for further examination.

Fire guts shops in Lucknow market, no casualties reported

Meanwhile, in a separate incident, A fire broke out at a fruit and vegetable market in the Krishna Nagar area of Lucknow, gutting around 15 shops, police said on Friday. Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Amit Kumar Anand said no casualties were reported in the incident that took place on Thursday night., the news agency reported.

Police and fire brigade teams rushed to the location soon after receiving information about the blaze.

Officials said firefighters managed to bring the fire under control after efforts at the scene. Fortunately, no casualties were reported in the incident.

Preliminary assessment suggests that the fire may have started due to a short circuit in one of the shops before spreading to nearby establishments.

 "Prima facie, the fire appears to have started due to a short circuit in one of the shops and subsequently spread to nearby shops," he said.

Officials said a detailed investigation is underway to ascertain the exact cause of the fire, and further legal action is being taken.

The ceasefire, agreed on April 8, is set to expire on April 22, making these negotiations crucial for preventing further escalation. Here is all you need to know about the discussion held in Islamabad.

The cause of these talks held in Islamabad: The War

The talks follow a deadly conflict that began on February 28, when the US and Israel launched coordinated strikes on Iran. The attacks reportedly killed Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and targeted key military and nuclear facilities, leaving more than 2,000 people dead over five weeks.

Iran’s response had global consequences. By effectively shutting down the Strait of Hormuz, a strategically vital route for nearly 20 per cent of the world’s oil and gas, the country triggered a surge in energy prices and disrupted international trade.

Amid rising tensions, a breakthrough came on April 8 when both sides agreed to a two-week ceasefire, mediated by Pakistan. But with the truce set to expire on April 22 and problems with Israel`s deadly attacks on Lebanon, the pressure to reach a longer-term solution and discuss the policies is mounting.

How did Pakistan come in the picture as a mediator, moreover a peacemaker?

Pakistan’s role in hosting and mediating these talks has drawn global attention. The country usually known for military problems, bad economy and terrorism aka not usually known for hosting such high-level negotiations, has positioned itself as a key diplomatic bridge.

Its unique relationships have played a role in this effort. At the same time, Islamabad has built strong ties with the United States, Saudi Arabia and China, giving it a unique diplomatic position.

In late March, Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar visited Beijing, where China backed Pakistan’s mediation efforts as being “in keeping with the common interests of all parties.” Former US President Donald Trump also said China helped bring Iran to the negotiating table. A Pakistani official noted, “On ceasefire night, hopes were fading, but China stepped in and convinced Iran to agree to a preliminary ceasefire,” reported AFP.

This combination of access and influence has allowed Pakistan to act as a bridge between two long-time adversaries.

What is the major agenda of these talks now?

Despite the talks, significant disagreements persist between the two sides.

The United States has proposed a 15-point plan focusing on limiting Iran’s nuclear programme, controlling ballistic missiles, reopening the Strait of Hormuz and easing sanctions.

Iran, however, has presented its own 10-point plan, demanding control over the strait, imposing tolls on passing vessels, ending regional military operations and lifting all sanctions.

Tensions have also been heightened by continued Israeli strikes in Lebanon. Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian criticised these actions, saying they made the negotiations “meaningless” and warning, “Our hands remain on the trigger.”

Israel continued its strikes in the country targeting Hezbollah after the ceasefire came into force with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu rejecting Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif`s assertion that the truce included Lebanon. US Vice President JD Vance appeared to take a softer tone, saying there may have been a "legitimate misunderstanding" from Iran that Lebanon would be included.

Key figures who will be at the table

The talks are being led by top officials from both sides. US Vice President JD Vance is heading the American delegation, joined by special envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner.

On the Iranian side, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf are leading the discussions. This marks the highest-level engagement between Washington and Tehran since the 2015 nuclear deal negotiations, highlighting the seriousness of the current crisis, reported the news agency.

Islamabad under tight security

As diplomacy unfolds, Islamabad has been turned into a high-security zone.

Authorities have not officially disclosed the venue, but strict measures are in place across the capital. The Serena Hotel in the Red Zone was cleared of guests, and a sudden two-day public holiday was announced to minimise movement.

The talks themselves are expected to be indirect. US and Iranian officials are likely seated in separate rooms, with Pakistani mediators carrying proposals back and forth, mirroring earlier negotiation formats.

Outside, the city remains tense but quiet, with heavy security deployments and restricted movement.

Could this actually shape the future making Pakistan the world hero for peace?

With the ceasefire deadline approaching, the Islamabad talks represent a critical turning point. Success could stabilise not just US-Iran relations but also global energy markets and regional security, also etching Pakistan`s name in the books for playing a key role as a peace-maker!

Failure, however, risks plunging the region back into conflict with far reaching global consequences.

According to the IMD’s latest five-day district forecast, the region will experience humid weather conditions today (April 10), with similar conditions likely to persist on Saturday. From Sunday onwards, dry weather is expected to prevail across Mumbai and the wider Konkan belt, bringing some relief.

In other parts of Maharashtra, light to moderate rain and thundershowers are likely over the Ghats of Kolhapur as well as Kolhapur, Sangli, Sholapur, Latur and Dharashiv on Friday. However, most districts including Pune, Nashik, Aurangabad, Nagpur and the Vidarbha region are expected to remain dry, with no weather warnings issued.

The IMD has issued a yellow alert for coastal districts, indicating the persistence of hot and humid conditions over the next two days.

IMD`s advisory

As part of its advisory, the IMD has urged residents to avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, especially between 11 am and 4 pm, and to stay well hydrated even if not feeling thirsty. People are advised to wear light-coloured, loose cotton clothing and cover their heads with caps, cloths or umbrellas when stepping outdoors.

Those working outside are encouraged to take frequent breaks and schedule strenuous activities during cooler parts of the day. The IMD also cautioned residents to watch for symptoms such as heat cramps, rashes, dizziness, nausea or headaches, and to seek immediate medical attention if needed.

The forecast is valid from 8:30 am IST on Friday to 8:30 am IST on Saturday, with the IMD noting that weather conditions may change and residents should stay updated with the latest advisories.

Maharashtra weather update: Rising temperatures across coastal and interior regions

Several parts of Maharashtra are experiencing warm to hot weather conditions, with temperatures hovering around or slightly above normal across coastal and interior regions.

In the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, Mumbai recorded a maximum temperature of 33.2 degrees Celsius at Colaba and 33.5 degrees Celsius at Santacruz. Minimum temperatures were 25 degrees Celsius and 22.2 degrees Celsius respectively, indicating warm and humid conditions, with morning humidity levels around 60 per cent.

Temperatures in Maharashtra

Coastal areas such as Alibag and Dahanu reported maximum temperatures of 32.2 degrees Celsius and 34.2 degrees Celsius respectively. Higher humidity along the coast continues to result in sultry weather.

Interior districts are witnessing more intense heat. Sholapur recorded one of the highest temperatures at 38.2 degrees Celsius, followed by Sangli at 37.7 degrees Celsius and Parbhani at 37.1 degrees Celsius. Jalgaon and Jeur also reported temperatures above 36 degrees Celsius.

Relatively cooler conditions prevailed in hilly regions, with Mahabaleshwar recording a maximum of 28.4 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 17.6 degrees Celsius. Nashik saw a maximum of 32.5 degrees Celsius with cooler night temperatures around 17.4 degrees Celsius.

Among other regions, Aurangabad recorded 35.6 degrees Celsius (below normal), Kolhapur 35.6 degrees Celsius (near normal), Osmanabad 36.9 degrees Celsius, and Ratnagiri 33.7 degrees Celsius with high humidity.

Addressing a press conference, Shah launched a scathing critique of the Trinamool Congress (TMC), alleging that 15 years of their governance has resulted in a complete breakdown of law and order. "People gave Mamata Didi a mandate with great hope, but today they are seeking change from the heart," Shah stated, asserting that the BJP`s vision is strictly aligned with Prime Minister Narendra Modi`s Viksit Bharat mission, reported ANI.

Shah said, "This manifesto is a path to bring every section of Bengal out of despair. It will show a new way out for farmers surrounded by various kinds of fears. It will also place before the people of Bengal the roadmap for the developed India envisioned by Prime Minister Modi." He added, "The people are frightened and disillusioned. The people want change from the heart. Today we are working as the main opposition party in the Bengal Assembly."

BJP manifesto aims development, security in West Bengal

According to ANI, the manifesto, themed around the concept of "Sonar Bangla" (Golden Bengal), promises a radical shift in governance, focusing heavily on national security, youth employment, and women`s safety.

Listing key commitments, Amit Shah said the BJP has outlined 15 major promises in its manifesto, aimed at addressing governance, development, and security concerns in West Bengal.

The party has pledged a strict crackdown on infiltration to safeguard national security, assuring that illegal entrants will be identified and removed through a "detect, delete and deport" policy. Alongside this, the BJP has promised to release a detailed white paper highlighting alleged corruption, deterioration of law and order, and governance failures during the 15-year rule of the TMC, reported ANI.

To tackle grassroots-level corruption, the manifesto proposes ending syndicate activities and curbing the widely criticised "cut money" culture. For government employees and pensioners, the BJP has assured payment of pending Dearness Allowance (DA) and implementation of the 7th Pay Commission within a stipulated timeframe.

As per ANI, focusing on employment, the party has committed to generating one crore jobs and self-employment opportunities over the next five years. Additionally, unemployed youth are proposed to receive financial assistance of Rs 10,000 as part of efforts to address rising joblessness.

On women`s empowerment, the manifesto promises the formation of women-only police battalions, implementation of the "Durga Suraksha Sahaya" scheme, and 33 per cent reservation for women in state government jobs. It also includes a monthly financial assistance of Rs 3,000 for women beneficiaries.

The BJP has also pledged cultural and linguistic recognition by proposing the inclusion of Kurmali and Rajbanshi languages in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution. In the agricultural sector, enhanced support for crops such as rice, potato, and mango has been promised to boost farmers` income, reported ANI.

For the fisheries sector, the party aims to register all fishermen under the "PM Matsya Sampada Yojana" and transform West Bengal into a fisheries export hub. On legal and governance reforms, the BJP has proposed implementing the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) and introducing strict laws to curb cattle smuggling.

Industrial and regional development also features prominently, with plans to rejuvenate tea gardens, strengthen the Darjeeling tea brand, and modernise the jute industry. In healthcare and education, the manifesto promises implementation of Ayushman Bharat and other central schemes, along with free HPV vaccination, breast cancer screening, and expansion of premier institutions such as AIIMS, IIT, and IIM in North Bengal, reported ANI.

Additionally, the BJP has proposed establishing a `Vande Mataram` museum to promote national heritage and enacting a law to ensure freedom of religious practices.

The First Lady also urged the US Congress to hold a public hearing for survivors of Epstein’s abuse to “give these victims their opportunity to testify under oath”, AFP reported.

Reacting to her statement, Epstein accusers, sisters Maria Farmer and Annie Farmer, said in a statement to US media: “We can’t speak for other survivors, but what we want is accountability, transparency and justice.”

They also called for the release of remaining records held by the Department of Justice, including complete FBI records from 1996.

Epstein died in federal custody in 2019 while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges involving minors. The case has continued to draw public attention in the United States (US).

Melania Trump said she had no knowledge of Epstein’s abuse and denied any involvement.

“I have never had any knowledge of Epstein’s abuse of his victims. I was never involved in any capacity. I was not a participant. Was never on Epstein’s plane, and never visited his private island,” she said.

National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) officials believe a chemical reaction in the urine treatment system is generating debris that is blocking a filter, news agency AFP reported.

The separate faecal disposal system is functioning normally. However, the wastewater tank is not evacuating properly.

Astronaut Christina Koch reported a “burning heater smell” coming from the system. On Tuesday, Flight Director Rick Henfling assured that “the toilet remains operational”, but added that the crew is facing challenges in evacuating the wastewater tank, AFP reported.

As a temporary measure, the four astronauts — Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch and Jeremy Hansen — are using personal reusable collapsible contingency urine disposal devices (backup urine bags).

The issue first surfaced just hours after launch from Cape Canaveral on April 1. Koch quickly stepped in, adjusted controls, and restarted the system with help from mission control, earning herself the title of “space plumber”.

“The latest theory is related to some of the chemistry that goes into ensuring that the wastewater doesn’t develop any biofilms,” Henfling explained.

The chemical reaction may be producing debris that clogs the filter.

The toilet on Orion is similar to the one used on the International Space Station, but this is the first time it has been deployed on a crewed deep-space mission. Unlike Apollo astronauts who used simple bags, Orion’s system is far more advanced — located beneath the floor in the only private space on the cramped capsule. It features suction for microgravity and is notably noisy, requiring ear protection.

Feces are collected in disposable bags that will be brought back to Earth for analysis.

The quirky issue has become a regular topic at press briefings at Johnson Space Center in Houston — evoking memories of the famous 1970 Apollo 13 line: “Houston, we’ve had a problem.”

The astronauts, who completed a successful lunar flyby on Tuesday and exited the Moon’s sphere of influence a day later, are now on the homeward leg of their 10-day test flight. On Thursday, they focused on stowing equipment, removing cargo and locker netting, and configuring the cabin for re-entry. They also reviewed the latest weather briefing, recovery force status, and the detailed entry timeline, along with post-landing operations.

A key activity scheduled for the day was the second return trajectory correction burn at 9.53 pm Eastern Daylight Time (EDT), during which Jeremy Hansen was to monitor the spacecraft’s guidance, navigation, and propulsion systems. This burn will further refine Orion’s path for a safe atmospheric re-entry.

Final preparations and splashdown timeline

NASA teams on the ground are making final arrangements for Orion’s re-entry and splashdown, targeted for Friday, April 10, around 8.07 pm EDT (5.37 am IST on April 11) off the coast of San Diego, California.

According to the detailed timeline:

Service module separation is expected around 7.33 pm EDT.

A final trajectory adjustment burn will occur at 7.37 pm.

Orion will enter communications blackout at 7.53 pm during peak re-entry heating, with the crew expected to feel up to 3.9 Gs.

Drogue parachutes will deploy near 22,000 feet, followed by the three main parachutes around 6,000 feet.

After splashdown, recovery teams aboard helicopters from the USS John P Murtha will extract the crew within two hours. The astronauts will undergo initial medical evaluations before being flown back to NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston.

The crew also shared a group hug inside Orion as they prepared for their return, an image released by NASA.

Artemis II mission significance

Artemis II, launched on April 1 from Kennedy Space Center, is a critical crewed test flight for the Orion spacecraft and the broader Artemis programme, which aims to return humans to the lunar surface by 2028.

The mission has achieved key milestones, including the crew becoming the most distant humans from Earth (surpassing the Apollo 13 record) and conducting observations of the far side of the Moon.

Live coverage of the return will begin at 6.30 pm EDT on NASA+, YouTube, and other platforms, followed by a post-splashdown news conference later in the evening (4 am IST on April 11).

According to the report, the heavy rains and resulting floods, which affected the country from March 26 to April 6, struck communities in numerous provinces, inundating hundreds of villages. More than 73,000 people have been impacted by the disaster.

Over 9,000 homes have been damaged and more than 15,500 acres of agricultural land have been destroyed, raising serious concerns about food security in the affected regions. The loss of over 500 head of livestock has further compounded the crisis for rural families who depend on farming and animal husbandry, Xinhua news agency reported.

Earlier on April 7, three women were killed and two children injured as a wall collapsed in Afghanistan`s Khost province following heavy rainfall and flash floods.

According to the local Governor`s spokesperson, Mustaghfar Gurbaz, the incident occurred in Gingini village in Maton area of Khost. He had said that the wall collapsed after recent rainfall as it had weakened its structure. Gurbaz had further said that injured children were taken to a nearby health facility, where they are undergoing treatment, Pajhwok Afghan News reported.

Meanwhile, at least 10 people were killed on April 7 and six others injured after heavy rains caused roof collapses in Nangarhar province of Afghanistan, according to local officials. The worst impacted regions include Jalalabad, Sherzad, Khogyani, Haska Mina and Angoor Bagh neighbourhood, Afghanistan-based Ariana News reported on Tuesday.

On Monday, officials said that at least 110 people and 160 others were injured after heavy rains, flash floods, landslides, lightning strikes and house collapses in Afghanistan over the past 12 days. Authorities said seven people remain missing while fresh rainfall predictions have sparked concerns that the toll could rise further, Khaama Press reported.

Authorities said 958 houses were completely destroyed while another 4,155 homes were partially damaged, leading to thousands of families in urgent need of shelter and assistance. Over 325 kilometres of roads have been damaged and businesses, farmland, irrigation canals and drinking water wells have suffered losses.

The debate gained traction after US President Donald Trump stated that he had agreed to a ceasefire “based on conversations with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir of Pakistan,” adding that they had “requested that I hold off the destructive force being sent tonight to Iran”.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi also indicated that Tehran had accepted the ceasefire “in response to the brotherly request of Prime Minister Sharif,” further fuelling claims of Pakistan’s diplomatic role.

Reacting to it, Shiv Sena leader Shaina NC questioned Pakistan’s credibility in seeking global recognition for peace efforts.

“I don’t know who Pakistan is a puppet of. They are not even capable of dreaming of a Nobel Prize, let alone receiving one for mediating in global conflicts. The so-called ceasefire and meetings they talk about have not even taken place,” she told IANS.

She further said that Pakistan’s leadership, including Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Army Chief Asim Munir, should first address internal challenges.

“They must eliminate the toxicity and terrorism within their own country before claiming any international diplomatic success. The truth about terrorism needs to be brought into the public domain. Only then can they aspire to be taken seriously on the global stage,” she added.

Calling the Nobel Peace Prize discussion “premature and misplaced”, Shaina NC said that Pakistan must first understand the implications of nuclear escalation and its global consequences.

“Given their track record of allegedly sheltering terrorists, their leadership should prioritise internal peace. India has not forgotten Pakistan’s actions, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi will respond at the appropriate time. The Nobel Peace Prize is a distant dream for them,” she asserted.

Echoing similar sentiments, BJP spokesperson Pratul Shah Deo criticised the very notion of awarding a Nobel Prize in such circumstances. “There is nothing amusing about giving a Nobel Prize to countries accused of promoting terrorism. Pakistan claims to have mediated between the US and Iran, but there is no clarity on the terms or outcomes of such mediation,” he said.

He added that rewarding such claims would undermine the credibility of the Nobel Peace Prize itself. “If those accused of promoting terrorism are considered for the Nobel Peace Prize, then by that logic, even Hitler should be given the award,” Shah Deo remarked.

The Delhi-Dehradun Economic Corridor has helped reduce the risk of human-wildlife conflict and prevented the isolation of animal populations in the region. By maintaining natural movement routes, the project supports long-term biodiversity conservation.

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), in collaboration with the Wildlife Institute of India (WII), has released a report titled `Landscapes Reconnected`.

The report presents the first clear evidence of wildlife using specially designed animal underpasses along the Delhi-Dehradun Economic Corridor.

The findings show that modern highway development can successfully coexist with nature, even in ecologically sensitive regions.

Underpasses help wildlife move safely

The study focused on an 18 km stretch between Ganeshpur and Asharodi, a forested region in the Shivalik range. This area is home to endangered species such as tigers, elephants, greater hornbills and king cobras.

A key feature of this corridor is a 10.97 km network of animal underpasses, part of a 20 km stretch designed to allow animals to cross safely. The project also includes one of Asia’s largest elevated wildlife corridors, built at an average height of 6 to 7 metres to accommodate large mammals.

Researchers divided the study area into three zones, covering riverbeds, hilly terrain and dense Sal forests. Over a 40-day period, the team used 150 camera traps and 29 acoustic recorders to monitor wildlife movement and sound levels.

The study recorded more than 111,000 images, including over 40,000 images of wildlife from 18 different species using the underpasses.

Wide range of species recorded

Among the animals observed, the golden jackal was the most frequently recorded, followed by nilgai, sambar and spotted deer. Smaller animals such as the Indian hare were also regularly seen using the passages.

Importantly, the study documented 60 instances of elephants safely crossing through the underpasses, proving that even large animals can adapt to such infrastructure.

Sound levels affect animal behaviour

The research found that noise plays a key role in how animals use the underpasses. While species like jackals and wild boar have adapted to traffic sounds, more sensitive animals, including elephants and spotted deer, prefer quieter areas.

Experts suggest that adding sound barriers in high-traffic zones could further improve the movement of wildlife.

The study confirms that well-planned infrastructure, including underpasses and elevated corridors, can protect wildlife while supporting development.

NHAI has reaffirmed its commitment to environmentally responsible highway development. Officials say future projects will continue to use data-driven and innovative methods to balance growth with ecological preservation.

Zelenskyy made his first public acknowledgment of the operations Wednesday in remarks to reporters that were embargoed until Friday. He said Ukrainian forces took part in active operations abroad using domestically produced interceptor drones proven in countering Iranian-designed Shahed drones used by Russia in Ukraine.

Since assuming office as Chief Minister in November 2005, Nitish Kumar has consistently held his position through membership in the Legislative Council, rather than contesting Assembly elections.

Although he was earlier elected as an MLA from Harnaut in 1985 and also served as a Member of Parliament in the Lok Sabha, his tenure as Chief Minister has largely been anchored in the Upper House of the State Legislature. Following his resignation from the Legislative Council, constitutional norms also necessitate that he step down as Chief Minister.

Upon arrival in New Delhi on Thursday, Nitish Kumar explained the reasoning behind his move, “I have accomplished a lot of work in Bihar. Now I felt that I should remain here, and that is what I am doing.”

He further added, “I will step down from my role there (Patna) and work here (New Delhi). I will resign in three or four days. New individuals will be appointed as Chief Minister and Ministers.”

According to a social media post by the US Geological Survey (USGS), the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory has reported a fresh development in the ongoing eruption of Kilauea volcano, with a new eruptive episode beginning at approximately 11:10 a.m. HST on April 9.

This marks Episode 44 of the current eruptive sequence. A Volcano Activity Notice (VAN) and Volcano Observatory Notice for Aviation (VONA) have been issued as a precaution.

Lava fountains from the volcano’s north vent were around 500 feet in height, indicating increasing activity at the summit.

Authorities have identified downwind volcanic gas emissions and falling tephra — small fragments of volcanic material — as the main hazards. 

Monitoring of the situation is ongoing, with further updates expected as activity develops.

Lava fountains and rising gas plumes

The main concern during this eruption is volcanic gas, especially sulphur dioxide, carbon dioxide, and water vapour. These gases can travel long distances downwind and form a visible haze known as “vog” (volcanic smog), which may cause breathing problems and eye irritation.

Another hazard is “Pele’s hair” – fine strands of volcanic glass formed during lava fountains. These sharp fibres can irritate the skin and eyes if they fall in populated areas.

Aviation alert

The USGS raised the volcano alert level from advisory to warning with an aviation colour code red, stating that it continues to assess the situation.

The lava fountains remain below 150 metres (500 feet) in height, while the fall of tephra — small volcanic fragments — has decreased compared to earlier in the day.

Due to a reduction in ground-level hazards, the Volcano Alert Level was hours later lowered to “Watch”. However, the Aviation Colour Code remains at “Red”, indicating that volcanic ash emissions still pose a risk to aircraft.

A highly active volcano

Kilauea has been erupting frequently since 1983 and remains one of the most active volcanoes on Earth.

While smaller than its neighbour Mauna Loa, Kilauea is far more active and continues to draw global attention with its powerful and visually stunning eruptions.

In his resignation letter, Justice Varma said, “I do not propose to burden your august office with the reasons which have constrained me to submit this missive,” adding that “it is with deep anguish” that he was stepping down from the office of Judge of the High Court of Judicature at Allahabad.

“It has been an honour to serve in this office,” the letter stated.

A copy of the resignation was also marked to Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant, IANS reported.

Justice Varma has been at the centre of controversy since burnt cash was allegedly discovered on March 14, 2025, in an outhouse at the official residence allotted to him during his tenure as a judge of the Delhi High Court.

Supreme Court had rejected Justice Varma’s plea against inquiry panel

Earlier this year, the Supreme Court dismissed a plea filed by Justice Varma challenging the Lok Sabha Speaker’s decision to constitute the enquiry committee. Pronouncing the operative part of the verdict, a Bench of Justices Dipankar Datta and Satish Chandra Sharma held: “We hold that the petitioner is not entitled to any relief in the present case.”

Justice Varma had argued that impeachment notices moved in both Houses required joint consultation between the Lok Sabha Speaker and the Rajya Sabha Chairman before the probe panel was formed, questioning the procedure on constitutional grounds.

He had also challenged the findings of a three-member in-house enquiry committee constituted by the Supreme Court, which concluded that he exercised “secret or active control” over the cash allegedly recovered from the premises. The apex court dismissed that challenge as well, holding that the in-house process was “fair and just” and did not undermine judicial independence.

Based on the in-house enquiry report, then Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sanjiv Khanna recommended initiation of removal proceedings, following which a parliamentary enquiry committee was constituted. The composition of the panel was later revised after the retirement of Madras High Court Chief Justice Maninder Mohan Shrivastava.

The boy, named Bhagirath Dewasi, fell into a borewell on Thursday, around 7.30 - 8.00 p.m., while the family was grazing sheep in the field.

According to family members, a sheep accidentally dislodged the stone covering the borewell. Curious Bhagirath, the youngest of three sons, approached from behind, removed the cover to peer inside, and slipped into the shaft.

Bhagirath is the son of Praveen Dewasi, a shepherd originally from Gudanla village in Pali district, Rajasthan. The family had arrived in the area just three days earlier for grazing. His mother witnessed the incident but could not reach him in time. At the time of the incident, Praveen was away in Rajasthan.

A massive joint rescue operation by NDRF (from Bhopal) and SDRF teams (from Harda, Indore, and Ujjain) is underway.

The child is being continuously monitored through a camera lowered into the borewell, and oxygen is being supplied to him. His condition is reported as stable so far.

Teams are digging a parallel pit using multiple Poclain and JCB machines, but progress has slowed after reaching around 40 feet due to hard rock formations. A hammer machine has been called from Bhopal and Indore to break through the rocks. Efforts are also being made to attach a rescue ring and rope to pull the child out safely.

Ujjain Superintendent of Police Pradeep Sharma said the child is trapped at a depth of approximately 70 feet and that every possible effort is being made to bring him out safely.

“The rescue operation is taking longer than anticipated due to the rocky terrain of the region and the intermittent presence of rock formations. The child’s condition currently remains stable. His actual physical state will only become clear once he is brought out. The rescue operation is ongoing,” he said.

SP Sharma, who is present at the spot, told media persons, “A team from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) is engaged in the rescue operation alongside the SDRF. Approximately half a dozen Poclain and earthmoving machines, excavators, are being used. Ambulances and other essential equipment have been deployed at the site to handle any emergency. Every possible effort is being made to bring the child out safely.”

Santosh Jat, Commandant of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), informed that teams are working to pull the child up using a ring attached to a ‘rescue rope’.

The entire village and surrounding areas are gripped with tension as the operation, which continued throughout the night, enters its critical phase on Friday. Local administration has deployed all necessary resources, and senior officials are monitoring the situation closely.

The meeting with Helberg comes on the heels of his visit to India earlier in February, when India joined the Pax Silica initiative.

The incident occurred within the jurisdiction of Safale Police Station on Thursday. The girl was in severe emotional distress and at risk of self-harm, the officer said.

The minor, a resident of Hanjaroli village, was upset by the belief that her mother showed more affection towards her younger sister and favoured her, he added.

Local police personnel, with support from villagers, launched a search operation to find the girl.

She was eventually located near the Dranjaroli Dam area, said District Superintendent of Police Yatish Deshmukh.

“Our primary concern was her safety. Fortunately, she was found unharmed. Following her rescue, she underwent professional counselling to address her negative thoughts and emotional distress,” he said, adding that she has since been reunited with her parents.

From Mumbai to Kanpur: How social media helped trace Shamu after six months

An Instagram post proved invaluable in tracing a 15-year-old boy from Santosh Nagar, Goregaon East, who had gone missing in September last year. The boy, who had travelled to Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, was recently brought back safely by the Dindoshi police.

The minor, Shyam ‘Shamu’ Gupta, had lost his parents during the COVID-19 pandemic and was living with his aunt in Mumbai. According to police, he was studying in Std VII but had started skipping school, which often led to scolding at home. “He used to leave with his school bag daily, but we later found he wasn’t attending classes,” said his cousin, Vikas Gupta.

Police said Shamu wandered in Mumbai for a few days before boarding a train from Lokmanya Tilak Terminus to Kanpur. There, he joined a group of traders selling utensils at fairs and began travelling with them for work in exchange for food and shelter.

During questioning, it was revealed that Shamu’s parents used to live in Kanpur, and the utensil sellers he was staying with also resides there. Since childhood, Shamu used to visit their home frequently. “After his parents’ demise, when his aunt brought him to Mumbai, he began missing his village. He was unable to focus on his studies and wanted to return to Kanpur,” a police officer said.

‘We’re happy he is back’

“We had stayed in Kanpur for nearly a month, but we had no idea that Shamu was there as well. If he had told us he was nearby, we would have been relieved. For the past few months, our family has been in deep distress. When my sister-in-law tried to contact him on Instagram, he never revealed his exact location, saying he was in Delhi and at other times elsewhere.

Speaking to the media in Nagpur, Wadettiwar said the government is misleading farmers with its loan waiver scheme.

“Unless the 7/12 is cleared, farmers will not get the real benefit of loan waiver,” he stated.

The senior Congress leader further claimed that under the current scheme, the outstanding loans of the farmers would remain, making it difficult for them to access fresh credit in the future. He also alleged that the crop insurance scheme is benefiting insurance companies more than farmers, while cultivators continue to remain deprived of relief. Wadettiwar demanded that the government completely clear the 7/12 records of farmers.

Turning his attack to Maharashtra politics, Wadettiwar said there is a rise in “splitting politics” and a collapse of ethics in public life.

Three diplomats who were familiar with China`s behind-the-scenes efforts also confirmed that Beijing, the biggest purchaser of Iranian oil, used its leverage to urge the Iranians back to the negotiating table. It was a major moment for Beijing, which had decried the US and Israel`s war against its economic partner Iran as misguided before getting directly involved in the push to call off the fighting, including discouraging strikes by Iran.

Talks between the sides are expected to begin in Pakistan this weekend. With the precarious truce hanging in the balance, China will now need to make a careful calculation about whether it will tread deeper into the waters of diplomacy as it weighs the impact that a long-lasting war could have on the global economy.

Middle East turmoil goes against Beijing`s interests, while its efforts may boost its global standing and strengthen its hand in negotiating thorny trade issues during Trump`s visit to China next month. "Beijing is not in the business of expending its leverage as a favour to others or for the greater good," Danny Russel, a former senior diplomat in ex-US president Barack Obama`s administration, said.

Iran war puts pressure on China`s economy

Mao Ning, a Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson, told reporters this week that China "has worked actively to help bring about an end to the conflict". The Chinese economy is already feeling pressure from Iran`s effective shuttering of the Strait of Hormuz, where about 20 per cent of the world`s crude normally flows. The blockade is having an enormous impact on Asia, a factor that seems to have informed the Chinese government`s efforts to consult with Pakistan to help mediate a two-week ceasefire.

China does not appear interested in providing guarantees for Iran`s long-term security as part of a deal to end hostilities, something Tehran has hoped for and sees as critical to deterring the US and Israel from carrying out strikes in the future. Iran`s ambassador to China suggested this week that its two closest allies â¿¿ China and Russia â¿¿ as well as the United Nations ensure the guarantee, which Tehran has sought before without success.

Asked about that possibility, Mao would only say that "we hope that all parties will resolve their disputes through dialogue and negotiation". Still, Chinese officials are cognizant that a lasting war threatens to have a real impact on Beijing`s bottom line. Premier Li Qiang announced last month that the government was projecting relatively modest 4.5 per cent to 5 per cent economic growth this year during a property slump and growing uncertainty around the globe. It`s the lowest growth target since 1991.

Ultimately, China`s foremost goal is "growth and development", according to one of the diplomats familiar with Chinese deliberations on the war. The diplomat, who like the others was not authorised to comment publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity, added that a continued closure of the strait ran counter to that interest. It not only limits the flow of a significant supply of crude to China but also cuts off an important shipping lane for Chinese exports to the Mideast.

How Iran diplomacy could play into Trump-Xi meeting

Trump will likely underscore that argument to Chinese President Xi Jinping during their much-anticipated Beijing summit next month. The talks, which were originally slated for this month, were pushed back so Trump could oversee the US bombardment of Iran.

"That the United States and Iran have at least temporarily edged away from the precipice of a catastrophic escalation owes in part to China`s support for the ceasefire that Pakistan brokered," Ali Wyne, a senior research and advocacy adviser for US-China relations at the International Crisis Group, said.

The statement from Kuwait`s foreign ministry, carried by the state-run KUNA news agency, put new pressure on the ceasefire ahead of planned talks on Saturday between the United States and Iran in Islamabad.

Kuwait`s foreign ministry said the drone attacks "targeted some vital Kuwaiti facilities" Thursday night. Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia`s state-run Saudi Press Agency, quoting an anonymous official, acknowledged a recent attack in the war that damaged its crucial East-West pipeline. That pipeline carries oil out to the Red Sea and avoids the Strait of Hormuz, which Iran maintains a chokehold on despite the pause in the fighting.

Earlier in a potential boost to Middle East ceasefire efforts, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Thursday that he authorised direct negotiations with Lebanon "as soon as possible" aimed at disarming Iranian-backed Hezbollah militants and establishing relations between the neighbours. Israel and Lebanon have technically been at war since Israel was established in 1948, and Netanyahu later stressed that there was no ceasefire between them. In a video statement, he said Israel will keep striking Hezbollah until security is restored in northern Israel.

There was no immediate response from Lebanon. But Israel-Lebanon negotiations were expected to begin next week at the State Department in Washington, according to a US official, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

The prospect of talks appeared to bolster the tentative ceasefire in the Iran war that has staggered under the weight of Israel`s bombardment of Beirut, Tehran`s continued chokehold on the Strait of Hormuz and uncertainty over whether talks can find common ground.

However later Thursday, US President Donald Trump appeared to cast doubt on the effectiveness of the ceasefire, writing on his social media platform: "Iran is doing a very poor job, dishonorable some would say, of allowing Oil to go through the Strait of Hormuz." "That is not the agreement we have!" Trump wrote. Netanyahu`s authorisation of negotiations with Lebanon came amid disagreement over whether the ceasefire deal included a pause in fighting between Israel and Hezbollah, and a day after Israel pounded Beirut with airstrikes, the deadliest day in Lebanon since the war began on February 28.

Israel has fought multiple wars and launched several major invasions of Lebanon over the years, most recently sending in troops last month in response to Hezbollah fire on Israel`s northern border communities.

The launch of direct peace talks is a significant achievement, though reaching an agreement will be difficult after decades of hostilities, Hezbollah`s continued presence and longstanding disagreements over the countries` shared land border.

The talks in Washington are expected to be handled on the American side by the US ambassador to Lebanon, Michel Issa, and on the Israeli side by the Israeli ambassador to the US, Yechiel Leiter, according to the person familiar with the planning. It was not immediately clear who would represent Lebanon. The timing and location of the talks was first reported by Axios.

After declaring victory with the ceasefire announcement, both Iran and the US have appeared to apply pressure on each other. Semiofficial news agencies in Iran suggested forces have mined the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial waterway for oil that Tehran has closed. Trump warned that US forces would hit Iran harder than before if it did not fulfil the agreement. Trump expressed concern again Thursday over reports that Iran`s military was charging tolls on tankers seeking to pass through the strait.

"They better not be and, if they are, they better stop now!" he wrote on social media. Questions also remained over what will happen to Iran`s stockpile of enriched uranium at the heart of tensions, how and when normal traffic will resume through the strait, and what happens to Iran`s ability to launch future missile attacks and support armed proxies in the region.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said in a message on Telegram that Iran`s decision to accept a ceasefire "is not a sign of weakness but a way to solidify Iran`s proud victories". Despite disputes over the ceasefire, it appears to have halted weeks of missile and drone attacks by Iran on its Gulf Arab neighbors and Israel, with no new launches reported Thursday.

There were no reports of strikes by the US or Israel targeting Iran. Trump said on Thursday that he has asked Netanyahu to dial back the strikes in Lebanon. Lebanon`s health ministry said more than 300 people were killed and more than 1,100 wounded Wednesday by Israeli strikes on central Beirut and other areas of Lebanon that Israel said targeted Hezbollah, which joined the war in support of Tehran.

Israel said Thursday it killed an aide to Hezbollah leader Naim Kassem, Ali Yusuf Harshi. Hezbollah did not immediately respond to a request for comment. A New York-based think tank warned the ceasefire " hovers on the verge of collapse " following Israel`s strikes Wednesday. Lebanon`s state-run National News Agency reported that an Israeli strike overnight killed at least seven people in southern Lebanon. The Israeli military did not immediately acknowledge the strike.

The Food and Drug Regulatory Authority (FDCA) conducted a "mega special drive" between April 4 and 9 to verify the quality, correct identification and consumer disclosure of paneer and cheese products across hotels, restaurants, dhabas and other food service units, officials said on Thursday.

A total of 2,527 units, including manufacturers and eateries, were inspected during the drive.

According to officials, 270 notices were issued for violations, while 18 establishments were sealed or closed.

Authorities collected penalties amounting to Rs 2,84,300 and destroyed 703 kg of food deemed unfit for consumption.

As part of the enforcement exercise, 95 samples were collected for laboratory analysis.

Food Safety Vans inspected 659 units and carried out on-the-spot testing of 679 samples.

Officials added that the campaign also sought to address consumer confusion around substitutes, saying that "analogue paneer is not fake but an alternative to dairy paneer", while warning that any mislabelling or misleading presentation would invite action.

Penalties, notices and legal proceedings are being initiated against violators, and the drive will continue with stricter enforcement.

The action follows the FDCA`s directive mandating that hotels, restaurants and eateries clearly display whether the paneer served is made from milk or is an analogue product.

Establishments have been instructed to put up prominent display boards specifying the nature of paneer offered to customers.

Gujarat Health Minister Praful Pansheriya said eateries must clearly indicate the type of paneer being served, adding that failure to do so would amount to misleading consumers.

The order also bars businesses from presenting analogue products simply as "paneer", requiring them instead to label such items as "analogue" or "vegetable-fat paneer alternative" on menus or display boards.

Officials said the directive is being enforced under provisions of the Food Safety and Standards Act, with non-compliance attracting penalties and legal action.

The inspections will now be extended to manufacturing units and vendors to ensure compliance in production and sale, as authorities continue efforts to prevent mislabelling and protect consumer interests.

Ali Khamenei and several senior Iranian officials and military commanders were killed in the West Asia conflict, which began on February 28. As of now, both sides have reached a temporary ceasefire and agreed to hold further negotiations in Islamabad.

However, the fragile ceasefire agreement between the United States and Iran hangs in the balance as Israel continues to strike southern Lebanon, despite Iran`s claims of the region being included in the temporary agreement.

Both Washington and Israel have maintained that the ceasefire does not extend to Hezbollah targets, a disagreement that has further complicated diplomatic efforts and heightened the risk of the truce collapsing.

Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu asserted that there is "no ceasefire in Lebanon" and vowed to continue military operations with "full force" against Hezbollah.

"I wish to inform you: There is no ceasefire in Lebanon. We are continuing to strike Hezbollah with full force, and we will not stop until we restore your security," he said.

However, he has instructed the Cabinet to open direct negotiations with the Lebanese government to achieve "disarmament of Hezbollah" and "historic peace agreement".

"Following repeated requests from the Lebanese government, last night I instructed the Cabinet to begin direct negotiations with Lebanon to achieve two goals. First, the disarmament of Hezbollah. Second, a historic peace agreement between Israel and Lebanon," he said.
