The police have warned that legal action will be taken against mandals that violate noise pollution rules, officials said on Friday.

Jalna Superintendent of Police Teghbir Singh Sandhu has directed police personnel across the district to make Ganesh mandals aware of the need to organise DJ-free immersion processions, the news agency reported.

Officers have been instructed to inform organisers about noise pollution regulations and encourage them to follow the rules during the festival.

Police have also been told to take appropriate legal action against Ganesh mandals found using high-decibel sound systems in violation of the law.

Ganesh festival from September 14 to 25

The Ganesh festival will be celebrated this year from September 14 to 25.

The Jalna police directive comes amid a wider debate in Maharashtra over the use of loudspeakers, DJs, high-powered sound systems and laser lights during festivals.

Nagpur imposes restrictions on sound systems and lasers

According to the PTI, on Thursday, Nagpur police prohibited the use of high-powered and modified sound systems, beams and laser lights during the upcoming festival season.

The restrictions will remain in force from September 4 to November 1, officials said.

The decision comes as authorities across Maharashtra face growing concerns over noise pollution and the impact of high-decibel sound systems during religious and cultural events.

Pune activist’s assault sparks controversy

The issue gained further attention after activist Vidyanand Bapat opposed the use of DJ systems and loudspeakers at a meeting organised by the Pune civic body ahead of the 10-day Ganesh festival, as per the PTI.

On Thursday morning, Bapat was allegedly assaulted by a man while he was speaking to electronic media.

The incident triggered outrage, with Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis saying that the alleged attacker had been arrested.

Fadnavis said it was wrong to assault anyone for expressing their views.

Noise pollution debate in Maharashtra

The latest directives in Jalna and Nagpur come as the state prepares for the Ganesh festival.

With authorities focusing on noise pollution and public safety, Ganesh mandals are being urged to ensure that immersion processions comply with existing regulations.

The agency said on Friday that three people were arrested during the operation in Haryana and Kolkata for their alleged involvement in receiving, layering and transferring money obtained through the fraudulent schemes.

Three digital arrest cases under investigation

The CBI has taken over several cases linked to digital arrest frauds that were originally registered in different states.

As part of the latest operation, investigators conducted extensive searches in three cases after analysing financial transactions and technical evidence, according to the IANS.

Investigators examined bank accounts, online account access records and other digital trails to track the movement of allegedly defrauded funds and identify members of the syndicates involved.

Victims allegedly cheated of over Rs 42 crore

The three cases involved victims who were allegedly kept under digital arrest for extended periods and cheated of large sums of money.

According to the CBI, one case involved a victim associated with BITS Pilani, who was allegedly kept under digital arrest for three months by scammers posing as police officers and defrauded of Rs 7.67 crore, as per the IANS.

In a Gujarat case, a victim was allegedly digitally detained for three months by people impersonating police officers and cheated of Rs 19.24 crore.

The third case, registered in Karnataka, involved a victim who was allegedly kept under digital arrest for a month and defrauded of Rs 15.45 crore.

Together, the three cases involve alleged fraud of more than Rs 42 crore.

Digital devices and banking records seized

During the searches, the CBI seized banking documents, account-related records, digital devices and other material believed to be important to the investigation, the news agency reported.

The agency said the seized material is being subjected to forensic examination to establish the wider financial and technological infrastructure allegedly used by the syndicates to operate across state borders.

Three accused arrested

The CBI also arrested three alleged members of the network during the operation.

Their questioning reportedly revealed their suspected roles in receiving, layering and dispersing the proceeds of the alleged fraud.

According to the agency, Akash, a Haryana resident, received Rs 1.95 crore of the allegedly defrauded money in his bank account.

Investigators found that he had opened the account himself and transferred the funds to other accounts on the same day. The CBI said this indicated his alleged direct involvement in handling the fraud proceeds, reported the IANS.

Kolkata firm account allegedly received Rs 1.5 crore

Another accused, Raja Karmakar of Kolkata, allegedly received Rs 1.5 crore of the fraud proceeds in his firm's bank account, the agency said.

The CBI also arrested Jyoti Rani, whose bank account allegedly received part of the defrauded money.

According to investigators, she allegedly withdrew some of the funds in cash and transferred the remaining amount to other accounts in an attempt to conceal the money trail, the news agency reported.

Supreme Court directs concerted action

The nationwide action comes amid growing concern over the spread of digital arrest scams.

In such frauds, cybercriminals allegedly impersonate police officers, government officials or other law-enforcement personnel and threaten victims with arrest or legal action. The victims are then pressured into transferring large amounts of money.

The Supreme Court has also directed the CBI to take concerted action against those involved in digital arrest frauds and the wider networks facilitating such crimes.

Probe continues to identify wider network

The CBI said its investigation is continuing and efforts are being made to identify and apprehend other members of the alleged syndicates.

The agency said it would continue pursuing individuals involved in digital arrest frauds and organised cybercrime in line with the directions of the Supreme Court.

Special Judge Hardip Singh, hearing cases under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), sentenced both men to three years of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 each. The order was pronounced on September 3.

The case dates back to August 2008, when the SAS Nagar (Mohali) police booked Dara Singh and Gurdarshan Singh for allegedly possessing 1.23 kg of cocaine, valued at around Rs 50 lakh at the time.

Dara Singh had served in the IAF for 29 years and retired as a Junior Warrant Officer (JWO).

During the investigation, police also seized two bank cheques issued by Dara Singh to Gurdarshan Singh. The cheques had a combined value of Rs 10 lakh and, according to the prosecution, were given to purchase the drugs, according to the PTI.

ED files money laundering case

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) registered a PMLA case against the two men in October 2019.

The agency filed its chargesheet in October 2022 and treated the drugs and the two cheques as proceeds of crime under the money laundering law.

The defence argued that the seized drugs and cheques could not be treated as proceeds of crime because there was no evidence of drug money being exchanged or earned in the underlying police case, as per the PTI.

Court rejects defence argument

The court rejected the defence's argument and held that the cheques, which arose from dealings between the two accused in the case, were to be considered proceeds of crime.

The court concluded that both men had committed an offence under Section 3 of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, which is punishable under Section 4 of the law, the news agency reported.

The court accordingly convicted both accused under Section 4 of the PMLA.

Period already spent in custody to be adjusted

The court noted that the two men had been facing proceedings for around 13 years while remaining on bail in the original police case.

It directed that the period they had already spent in detention would be set off against their substantive prison sentence.

Accused seek leniency

During the hearing on the sentence, both convicts sought a lenient view from the court.

They told the court that they were the sole breadwinners of their respective families and suffered from various health problems. They also continued to maintain that they were innocent and that the original police case had been falsely registered against them, reported the PTI.

Earlier conviction challenged in High Court

Court records accessed by PTI show that a trial court had convicted the two men in the original police case in March 2015.

Dara Singh, who was later re-employed by the Punjab Technical Education Board and worked there for nine years, challenged his conviction before the Punjab and Haryana High Court.

The High Court suspended his sentence, and his appeal remains pending.

The students had raised several concerns, including the condition of ashram schools meant for tribal communities.

Gandhi said he had listened carefully to the students’ problems and demands and assured them that the Congress and he would stand with them in their fight for their rights, as per the PTI.

‘Education is a right, not a privilege’

During his Nashik visit, Rahul Gandhi had also said that education was a right of every student in India and should not be treated as a privilege.

He stressed that every student should have access to a safe, respectful and suitable environment for education.

Gandhi also said students from marginalised communities should not be neglected by the system and should instead receive the necessary support and assistance.

Focus on tribal students’ demands

His clarification came after a podcast clip surfaced on social media in which he appeared to claim that he had “cracked the skull” of Nishu’s father and avoided arrest despite the alleged assault.

Speaking to ANI, Bharadwaj said, “What people are calling an attack was an act of self-defence. If I had not acted in self-defence, I could have been lynched by the mob or killed. There was no attempt to attack him. I have proof in the form of video. I was gheraoed by 10-15 people. When I acted in self-defence, he was hit on the head. As per his medical report from Delhi Police, he did not suffer major injuries. I am cooperating with the ongoing investigation.”

Rejects podcast clip as fake

Bharadwaj also rejected the authenticity of the podcast clip being circulated on social media, alleging that it was fake.

“The podcast clip that is being shared on social media by Rahul Gandhi and others is fake. Those saying that I was released because of influence from Kapil Mishra, I want to tell them that Kapil Mishra and Chirag Paswan are like my brothers. People should understand what was said in sarcasm,” he said, reported ANI.

CJP protests, demands legal action

Meanwhile, the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) has launched a protest in the national capital, demanding legal action against Bharadwaj.

The protest comes amid a row over the alleged assault of Nishu Azad’s father during the Jantar Mantar demonstration.

Kejriwal shares video, questions alleged protection

Earlier, AAP national convenor Arvind Kejriwal also shared a video related to the Jantar Mantar protest posted by CJP on its X handle and questioned the alleged protection provided to Bharadwaj.

According to the video, Bharadwaj allegedly claimed to have attacked people during the demonstration.

Questioning the alleged protection, Kejriwal asked whether freedom fighters such as Bhagat Singh had sacrificed their lives for a country where a Prime Minister would “openly protect such thugs”.

In a post on X while sharing the video, Kejriwal wrote, “You absolutely must watch this video. Your blood will boil. Did heroes like Bhagat Singh sacrifice their lives for this, that one day the country would get a prime minister who would openly protect such thugs?”

"One of the most anticipated political memoirs of our time, Belonging is a dramatic and deeply personal story of love, identity, duty and belonging, and offers a rare insider's view of India's journey," HarperCollins India said in a statement.

The announcement comes amid a controversy involving Penguin Random House India (PRHI), which had initially been keen to publish the memoir but later said it would not be the Indian publisher.

The controversy began following reports of differences between the publisher and the author's representatives over editorial changes to the manuscript.

Several Congress leaders raised concerns over alleged governmental pressure and freedom of expression, with some claiming there was pressure on Penguin India to remove sections relating to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the RSS and China's occupation of Indian territory during the Modi regime.

In an exclusive statement to PTI last week, PRHI clarified that it was "really keen" to publish the book, describing it as a "hard-won acquisition", but ultimately decided to step away due to a stalemate over "a particular issue".

While maintaining that there was "no external pressure whatsoever," PRHI declined to disclose the exact nature of the impasse, citing confidentiality clauses and its agreement with the author.

"On some, they agreed to changes and on others, we accepted the author's position. Unfortunately, and ultimately, an understanding could not be reached on a particular issue," said PRHI, the Indian subsidiary/operating company of Penguin Random House (PRH), the global publishing group.

With HarperCollins India now set to publish the memoir domestically, Belonging will be available in India alongside its international release on November 10 by Alfred A Knopf, an imprint of Penguin Random House.

Sonia Gandhi’s journey from Italy to India

Belonging begins with Gandhi's childhood in post-war Veneto, Italy, and traces her journey to Cambridge, where she met Rajiv Gandhi, grandson of India's first prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru, in 1965.

The memoir recounts her marriage to Rajiv Gandhi and her introduction to her mother-in-law, former prime minister Indira Gandhi. It also details her efforts to adjust to life in India, including learning Hindi, wearing saris and adapting to Indian food and culture.

The deceased, identified as Vandana Kushwaha in police records, was found in the water tank in the Nehru Nagar area under Rau police station limits on Thursday.

Police recovered the body after neighbours alerted them and sent it for post-mortem examination.

Police said injury marks were found on the woman's body. Her husband, Upendra Patel, and brother-in-law have been detained for questioning.

"Prima facie, the case appears to be one of murder. However, the exact cause of death will be known only after the post-mortem report," ACP Nidhi Saxena said.

According to police, Vandana and Patel had earlier lived in Nehru Nagar. Her family later shifted to a rented house in Rajnagar, reportedly because of Patel's addiction problems.

The couple subsequently got married for love on August 11, and Vandana began living with Patel at his residence.

Police said Vandana's family had earlier lodged a missing-person report at Chandan Nagar police station. Her statement was later recorded and, as she was an adult, she expressed her wish to live with Patel. Her family had also told police that the couple frequently quarrelled over Patel's addiction.

The incident came to light on Thursday afternoon when neighbours allegedly heard Vandana screaming from inside the house. Soon after, Patel came out, and neighbours noticed bloodstains on his shirt, police said.

When there was no further activity at the house for a long time, the neighbours informed the police.

"Police reached the spot and recovered Vandana's body from the water tank outside the house. The husband and his brother are being questioned, and all circumstances surrounding the death are being investigated," Saxena said.

Police said the post-mortem examination is expected to provide crucial evidence regarding the cause of death. Further action will be taken based on the autopsy findings and the evidence gathered during the investigation.

According to the police, Ashwini Manohar Pol, who lived with her parents in Vhantal village, visited the historical site with her son Ajinkya (5.5 years) and twin daughters Veera and Kranti, aged two and a half years.

The four fell from the Upli bastion, the tallest point at the fort, an official said.

Ashwini and Ajinkya died at the scene, while Veera and Kranti were rushed to the Dharashiv Civil Hospital with injuries. However, Kranti also died during treatment, the official said.

Spread over 105 acres, the Naldurg fort has over 100 bastions. The Upli bastion is nearly 80 feet tall.

Ashwini had earlier joined the Maharashtra Security Force, a government security agency, but resigned 4-5 months ago, the official said.

An accidental death report has been registered at Naldurg police station, he said.

''The last rites of Ashwini and her two children will be performed today. The reason behind the incident will be investigated after that,'' the official added.

According to the office of the Relief Commissioner, around 3.53 lakh people have been affected by the floods. As many as 17,544 people have been moved to safer locations, while 4,847 people are currently staying in relief shelters.

A total of 1,312 flood shelters have been set up across the state, while 1,634 flood outposts, 1,697 boats and motorboats and 1,068 medical teams have been deployed in the affected areas, the government said in a statement issued on Friday.

The relief machinery has distributed 72,897 food relief packets and 3,67,551 lunch packets among affected people. More than 5.52 lakh chlorine tablets and 1.87 lakh ORS packets have also been distributed as part of health and sanitation measures.

More than 5,000 quintals of fodder have been provided for livestock. Over 45,000 animals have been affected by the floods, but no livestock death has been reported, the statement said.

The affected districts are Amroha, Ayodhya, Azamgarh, Badaun, Ballia, Barabanki, Basti, Chandauli, Farrukhabad, Ghazipur, Gonda, Gorakhpur, Hardoi, Kasganj, Kanpur, Lakhimpur Kheri, Mirzapur, Moradabad, Pilibhit, Prayagraj, Raebareli, Rampur, Sant Kabir Nagar, Shahjahanpur, Unnao and Varanasi.

In Chitrakoot, the water level of the Mandakini River has receded to 128 metres from its peak of 135.20 metres recorded on August 29, but authorities continue to monitor the situation and relief operations, the government said.

As many as 688 people have been evacuated to safer locations, while 13,906 people in 36 affected villages have received assistance.

The affected areas include 19 villages in Karwi, seven in Rajapur and 10 in Manikpur.

The administration has distributed 28,803 lunch packets and 2,065 relief kits in the affected areas. Eighteen flood shelters are operational, while 28 medical teams equipped with ambulances and medicines have been deployed.

The government said 653 houses suffered partial damage in the floods. Financial assistance of Rs 7.52 lakh has been transferred to the accounts of 188 affected beneficiaries, while Rs 1.20 lakh has been provided in a case of complete damage. Payments in other cases are being processed.

A 30-member National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) team and two State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams comprising 27 personnel have also been deployed in the district. Authorities are conducting crop-loss surveys to assess damage to farmers.

In Ghazipur, police and the administration rescued 12 shepherds and more than 2,000 sheep stranded on an island near Duhia Saraiya as the Ganga River''s water level rose.

The rescue operation lasted around six hours. A joint police-administration team reached Dadri Ghat after receiving information late at night and used a night-vision drone to locate the stranded people and animals.

The PAC flood company, police, administrative teams and local boatmen then carried out the rescue operation, in which there was no loss of life, the statement said.

Shouting slogans against the Delhi Police, the protesters, including CJP co-conveners Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka, as well as Aazad Samaj Party (Kanshi Ram) chief and MP Chandra Shekhar Azad, accused the police of failing to take stringent action against Bhardwaj, reported PTI.

Protest follows viral video of alleged assault

The protest was organised after a widely circulated interview with Bhardwaj, in which he allegedly claimed to have assaulted Sanjay Kumar, father of CJP protester Nishu Azad, during a demonstration at Jantar Mantar on July 20.

Ranka alleged that Sanjay was assaulted during the party's protest at Jantar Mantar and suffered head injuries. He claimed that repeated demands for the accused's arrest and the registration of an attempt-to-murder case had yielded no action from the Delhi Police.

The Delhi Police, however, disputed claims that Sanjay suffered a skull fracture, saying he sustained a minor injury during a scuffle and that a case was registered based on his complaint.

CJP demands attempt-to-murder case

Ranka, along with Das and other party supporters, proceeded from Patel Chowk to the Parliament Street police station on Friday in connection with the case, reported PTI. 

He alleged that some of those involved in the incident had now openly admitted to assaulting Sanjay and attempting to kill him, but the police had not taken action against them.

Ranka further alleged that the inaction was due to the influence of BJP workers and Delhi minister Kapil Mishra.

“We demand that Delhi Police immediately arrest those who have identified themselves as being involved, register an attempt-to-murder case against them, and invoke all applicable serious charges,” Ranka said.

CJP alleges caste angle in incident

Das alleged that Sanjay is the father of a minor who has been associated with the CJP-led protest since its beginning and regularly accompanied her to the sit-in.

He alleged that while protesters were holding a peaceful demonstration, members of a “criminal gang” entered the protest site and resorted to violence, reported PTI.

“After the FIR was registered, we continued putting pressure on the police, saying that this was an attempt to murder and that the relevant section should be added,” he added.

Das also alleged that there was a caste angle to the incident.

“We also demanded that the SC/ST Act be invoked because they belong to a Dalit family,” he said.

According to Das, when protesters sought further action, police officials asked them to approach the court and obtain an order.

CJP accuses police of inaction

Ranka said the CJP and its entire team had stood by Sanjay since the beginning of the incident and accused the police of failing to act despite repeated demands.

He described the alleged inaction as “a shameful day for the country and our democracy” and demanded immediate action against all those allegedly involved in the assault.

Bhardwaj allegedly claims responsibility in video

The CJP protest comes after a clip from an interview with Swatantra Bhardwaj, who describes himself as a “kattar Hindu” (hardline Hindu), circulated widely online.

In the video, Bhardwaj is heard allegedly claiming that he “cracked the skull” of Nishu Azad's father during the protest.

“...Do you know which section this crime attracts? Section 307. He needed 60 stitches. The man was being taken away in an ambulance in serious condition. His daughter was standing outside the police station and saying that she would die by suicide if her father didn't get justice. But I was not even jailed. The world should know this. I was out and about through the night,” Bhardwaj is heard saying in the video.

In the one-hour interview, which is available on YouTube, Bhardwaj also claimed to have political connections.

“I have the blessings of Hanuman upon me. And secondly, Kapil Mishra is my elder brother. They say Kapil Mishra called and I was released. Chirag Paswan is my elder brother. How many leaders do you know? Do you know Modi ji? Modi ji is also my elder brother. I have everyone's support,” he said, PTI reported. 

Security tightened outside police station

Security was stepped up around the police station, with additional personnel deployed and barricades put in place to maintain law and order.

In its preliminary report, the AAIB described the confirmation of drug use by the pilot-in-command as a serious concern and asked the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) to take appropriate action.

What happened on Air India’s Phuket-Delhi flight?

Air India flight A12379, operating from Phuket to Delhi on August 4, reportedly experienced a sudden 300-foot drop in altitude while flying over Odisha.

The Airbus A320, registered as VT-EXO, subsequently stabilised and continued its journey before landing safely in Delhi.

The aircraft was carrying 137 passengers, including three infants, and eight crew members, two pilots and six cabin crew.

Twenty passengers and four cabin crew members were injured in the incident.

Civil Aviation Ministry awaits detailed probe

Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu said the AAIB was investigating the incident and that the government would decide on further action based on the findings of the preliminary report.

Speaking to reporters, Kinjarapu stressed that the investigation must be based on thoroughly verified facts and that conclusions should not be rushed. He said the government has full confidence in the AAIB and would await its findings before deciding on additional measures.

DGCA weighs random testing for pilots

Amid the incident, the DGCA is reviewing a proposal to introduce random testing for pilots throughout the year, according to ANI.

Under the proposal, pilots could be tested at random points during the year rather than within a limited testing window. The move is being discussed with airlines and other stakeholders.

Kinjarapu said the government would consider strengthening aviation safety protocols after consultations are completed, while taking operational requirements into account.

Pilot testing coverage could rise from 10 pc to 100 pc

The minister said mandatory pilot testing currently covers 10 per cent of pilots.

The government is discussing with airlines the possibility of extending testing coverage to 100 per cent, with tests conducted randomly throughout the year.

Kinjarapu said the objective is to strengthen the monitoring system while maintaining a balance between aviation safety and operational requirements.

He added that flying checks are already conducted in line with international norms, but authorities are examining whether monitoring mechanisms can be made more stringent.

Government to consider further safety measures

Kinjarapu said any additional safety measures would be considered after the AAIB’s findings and the ongoing DGCA consultations.

He reiterated that the government would take steps to strengthen aviation safety wherever necessary, while ensuring that decisions are based on verified evidence.

Government holds talks with airlines over operational challenges

The minister also addressed the operational and financial challenges facing Indian airlines, including SpiceJet.

Kinjarapu said the Civil Aviation Ministry holds monthly discussions with airlines to assess difficulties affecting their operations.

According to the minister, SpiceJet has also been part of these discussions, with the government encouraging the airline to strengthen its operations, particularly its financial position.

He said the airline has assured the ministry that it would take steps to address the issues soon.

IndiGo flight from Doha diverted to Muscat a day earlier

The incident comes a day after an IndiGo flight from Doha to Bengaluru was safely diverted to Muscat after the pilot-in-command reported feeling unwell and required immediate medical attention.

The pilot of Flight 6E 1302 was attended to by a medical team after landing in Muscat and was later taken to a hospital. The pilot is currently reported to be in good health.

IndiGo arranged an alternate aircraft from Bengaluru to Muscat, along with a fresh set of crew members, to enable passengers to continue their journey to Bengaluru.

IndiGo flight 6E 1302 was diverted “due to an urgent requirement of medical attention for one of the operating crew members,” the airline said in a statement, reported IANS.

“The said crew member was attended to by the medical team upon landing and is feeling better now. An alternate aircraft along with a new set of crew has been arranged to continue the journey to Bengaluru,” it added.

The airline further said it was providing refreshments and regular updates to passengers waiting in Muscat.

The United States India Relationship Council, or USIRC, said Thursday that its delegation met Democratic and Republican members of Congress during two days of meetings on Capitol Hill.

The discussions on August 31 and September 1 covered trade, defence, the Quad, the Indo-Pacific and what the organisation described as threats from the Chinese Communist Party.

Supply-chain resilience, maritime security and cooperation in space were also discussed, according to USIRC.

The lawmakers were Representatives Jonathan Jackson and Raja Krishnamoorthi of Illinois; Rich McCormick of Georgia; Young Kim, Derek Tran, Scott Peters, Jimmy Panetta and Sydney Kamlager-Dove of California; and Suhas Subramanyam of Virginia.

USIRC is a registered political action committee that advocates stronger US-India relations and supports candidates it considers committed to the bilateral partnership.

The organisation said it is concentrating its advocacy on lawmakers who serve, or are likely to serve, on congressional committees dealing with foreign affairs.

McCormick, a Georgia Republican, offered some of the strongest comments on the relationship during the meetings, according to USIRC.

He described the prospect of the world's largest economy working with a country expected to become the world's third-largest economy as “very exciting and full of potential.”

McCormick said the US-India relationship was the “top most priority” when viewed in the context of the world's future, according to the group's account.

He also said Washington and New Delhi should ensure that the two countries are “not just friends, but allies into the future.”

USIRC said Krishnamoorthi, an Illinois Democrat, was “very forthright about his commitment to the US India relationship.”

The organisation described Kim, a California Republican, as a longtime supporter of stronger relations with India.

Subramanyam, an Indian American Democrat from Virginia, urged greater political participation with the message: “Get involved, Stay involved,” according to the release.

USIRC said Tran expressed a commitment to building the relationship “for years to come,” while Peters expressed support for stronger bilateral ties.

Panetta discussed opportunities for mutual growth in several areas, the organisation said.

Kamlager-Dove, who serves as the ranking Democrat on the House Foreign Affairs subcommittee covering South and Central Asia, stressed the importance of engaging the diaspora in strengthening bilateral relations, according to USIRC.

The organisation said its meetings produced broad agreement on the importance of the Indo-Pacific and the need for Washington and New Delhi to deepen cooperation.

USIRC listed among what it called “points of consensus” that threats from the Chinese Communist Party should be addressed “collectively and cohesively” and that the United States and India are “natural allies.”

More than 4,700 people remain missing as search and rescue teams continue operations across affected areas.

The flash floods, triggered by an ice-rock avalanche near the Nepal-Tibet border on August 26, caused widespread destruction across towns and villages in northern and central Nepal, sweeping away homes, roads and other infrastructure.

Death toll rises as more bodies are recovered

According to Nepal Police, 359 bodies have been recovered in Chitwan, 218 in Nawalparasi East, 208 in Nawalparasi West, 185 in Nuwakot, 140 in Rasuwa, 72 in Gorkha, 60 in Dhading and 38 in Tanahu.

Two additional people died while undergoing treatment at hospitals in Kathmandu, taking the total death toll to 1,282.

A joint command of Nepal's security forces is continuing search operations for 4,798 people reported missing from different affected areas.

The scale of the disaster has made search and identification efforts difficult, with damaged infrastructure and disrupted communication affecting the collection of information from remote areas.

Hundreds of children remain unaccounted for

An estimated 280 children are missing in Rasuwa, while between 300 and 350 others remain unaccounted for in neighbouring Nuwakot in central Nepal, the Kathmandu Post reported.

The figures were compiled using information from local Education Development and Coordination Units, local governments and educational institutions.

Authorities said the number of missing children could change as schools and local agencies continue to verify reports from affected communities.

Surya Bahadur Khatri, head of the Nuwakot Education Development and Coordination Unit, said officials were working with school authorities to establish verified figures.

"We are actively liaising with headmasters to collect verified data on missing students, though school heads are struggling to provide exact figures due to broken communications."

"Although a few missing students have been located, new reports of unaccounted-for children continue to arrive from various schools. We estimate that at least 300 pupils are missing in our district."

Nearly 250 children missing in Bidur Municipality

In Bidur Municipality of Nuwakot alone, around 250 children have remained missing since the floods struck, according to Navaraj Sapkota, a school inspector with the municipality's education unit.

"The situation on the ground is deeply distressing. In some cases, we have located surviving parents who cannot find their children, while in other instances, surviving students are searching for missing parents," Sapkota said.

Bidur Municipality has 170 educational institutions, including 142 community schools and 28 private schools.

Officials are continuing to coordinate with school heads and local authorities as they attempt to trace missing students and reunite surviving family members.

Rasuwa continues verification of missing students

In Rasuwa, Durga Prasad Silwal, chief of the local education unit, said official verification was continuing, although preliminary records indicated that 280 students remained missing across the district.

The disaster has also affected teachers and other school staff members.

Education authorities have confirmed that 22 teachers and school staff members remain missing across Rasuwa and Nuwakot.

Several teachers from Dhading and Gorkha who had travelled to Rasuwa on pilgrimage were also caught in the floods and remain missing.

Twenty-two teachers and school staff members still missing

Rasuwa has reported 16 missing teachers, including 15 from community schools and one from a private institution.

Nuwakot has confirmed that six teachers remain missing, according to the Kathmandu Post.

Authorities said that although bodies of victims have been recovered in downstream districts, they have yet to establish the exact number of missing students and teachers among those identified.

The identification process remains ongoing as authorities continue to recover bodies and collect information from affected communities.

Floods damage and destroy schools

The disaster has also caused extensive damage to educational infrastructure.

According to data from Nepal's Ministry of Education, the floods affected 22 schools across Rasuwa, Nuwakot and Dhading.

Of these, 12 educational institutions were completely destroyed, according to the report.

The order comes amid a wider debate in Maharashtra over excessive noise during public celebrations, particularly following recent protests and controversy in Pune over the use of high-decibel sound systems during religious processions.

Police cite noise pollution and public safety concerns

Nagpur Police Commissioner Vishwas Nangre Patil said in a press note that disputes and tensions often arise during major public celebrations because of the use of high-decibel sound systems.

The order referred to several upcoming festivals and public processions that are expected to take place during the period covered by the restrictions.

According to the police, the use of such equipment can violate noise limits prescribed under the Environment Protection Act, 1986, and the Noise Pollution (Regulation and Control) Rules, 2000.

The order also raised concerns over the use of beam and laser lights, stating that they could cause eye injuries, pose risks to public health and distract drivers, potentially resulting in road accidents.

Modified sound systems and laser equipment prohibited

Under the order, programme organisers, office-bearers, sound-system operators, owners of vehicles fitted with modified sound equipment and operators of beam and laser light systems have been informed about the restrictions.

The police have prohibited the use of "Dolby and plasma sound systems, pressure music systems, modified sound-system vehicles, and beam and laser lights" between September 4 and November 1.

The order is intended to prevent violations of prescribed noise limits and reduce potential safety hazards during a period marked by large public gatherings and processions across the city.

BJP seeks reconsideration of blanket ban

Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party has urged Nagpur Police Commissioner Vishwas Nangre Patil to reconsider the decision.

In a press release, Nagpur city BJP chief Dayashankar Tiwari said it would be more appropriate for the police to strictly enforce prescribed decibel limits under the Noise Pollution (Regulation and Control) Rules rather than impose an outright ban on entire categories of sound systems.

He said many families depended on the sound-system business for their livelihood and claimed that a blanket ban could affect their employment and income.

Tiwari also said the rules should be applied uniformly to all public events across the city rather than being associated only with specific festivals and religious celebrations.

BJP calls for uniform enforcement of decibel limits

"The decision should apply on equal terms to all public events across the city, and not be limited to specific festivals," Tiwari said.

"Therefore, the police administration should refrain from banning such equipment. Instead, it should define clear decibel limits and enforce them strictly," he added.

The BJP's demand has highlighted the broader challenge of balancing noise pollution regulations and public safety requirements with the economic interests of businesses that provide sound and lighting equipment for public events.

Pune noise pollution debate remains in focus

The issue of excessive noise has also become a major point of discussion in Pune after activist Vidyanand Bapat opposed the use of DJ systems and loudspeakers at a meeting organised by the city's civic body ahead of the 10-day Ganesh festival, scheduled to begin on September 14.

Bapat's objections to high-decibel sound systems triggered a heated public debate over noise pollution, public health and the regulation of sound equipment during festivals.

On Thursday morning, Bapat was allegedly assaulted by a man while speaking to electronic media.

The incident triggered widespread criticism, following which Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said the alleged attacker had been arrested.

Fadnavis also said that it was wrong to assault any individual for expressing their views.

Jarange, who has been on an indefinite hunger strike at Antarwali Sarati village in Jalna district for the past week, said he would continue his fast despite assurances from a government delegation that met him on Thursday.

He also appealed to members of the Maratha community to begin applying for Kunbi caste certificates, particularly where records supporting their eligibility have been identified.

Government delegation meets Jarange at Antarwali Sarati

A government delegation comprising Ministers Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil and Uday Samant, MLC Prasad Lad and MLA Makarand Patil met Jarange on Thursday in an effort to persuade him to end or postpone his hunger strike.

Vikhe Patil appealed to Jarange to reconsider his decision in view of his deteriorating health and said the state government was committed to resolving issues related to the Maratha community.

According to Vikhe Patil, the government has traced around 58 lakh Kunbi records and would speed up the process of issuing Kunbi caste certificates to eligible applicants.

He said nodal officers would be appointed to monitor the process and address difficulties faced by applicants.

However, the discussions did not result in Jarange ending his hunger strike.

Jarange urges community members to apply for Kunbi certificates

Following the meeting, Jarange appealed to members of the Maratha community to begin submitting applications for Kunbi certificates from September 4.

He specifically referred to records traced through the Hyderabad Gazette and urged eligible families to initiate the process of obtaining Kunbi caste certificates and validity certificates.

Kunbi, an agrarian community, falls under the Other Backward Class category and is eligible for reservation in government jobs and educational institutions.

Jarange has been demanding Kunbi certificates for eligible members of the Maratha community, which would allow them to seek reservation benefits under the OBC category.

He said applications could be made based on family relationships, blood relations and clan links with individuals whose Kunbi records had been identified.

Activist asks applicants to approach collectors over difficulties

Jarange said around 58 lakh Kunbi records had been identified and urged eligible families to begin the application process without delay.

He also appealed to those facing difficulties in submitting their applications to immediately approach the district collector concerned.

The activist said the process of tracing records and issuing certificates should move forward, but maintained that the government's assurances were not enough for him to withdraw his protest.

Despite the meeting with the government delegation, Jarange said he would continue his hunger strike until all his demands were accepted.

'I will not withdraw my hunger strike'

"I will not withdraw my hunger strike until all the demands of the Maratha community are accepted. If Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde genuinely wants to support the Maratha community, he should take a sincere and concrete stand and extend his support," Jarange said.

"I will drink and take IV fluids, but I will not break my fast," he said.

Jarange's decision to accept water and intravenous fluids comes amid concerns over his health following several days of fasting. However, he has maintained that accepting medical support does not mean he is withdrawing his agitation.

Jarange gives government September 11 deadline

Late on Thursday night, Jarange issued an ultimatum to the Maharashtra government, saying he would give it until September 11 to implement the demands of the Maratha community.

He warned that he would take the protest to Mumbai if the demands were not fulfilled within the deadline.

"This is my last hunger strike. My body will not support me anymore. If I protest again, I will die. I will give you time until September 11. However, if our demands are not implemented by September 11, I will go to Mumbai and protest on September 12," he said.

Ajit Pawar and four others were killed in a plane crash near Baramati airport in Pune district on January 28 this year.

"The void created in Maharashtra due to the loss of respected Ajit Dada is immense. Who can understand the pain better than his mother, his children and me? Therefore, do not politicise Ajit Dada's accident," Sunetra Pawar told reporters in Pune.

She said the family and other concerned parties wanted a concrete decision following the accident and that efforts were being made in that direction.

"We have already met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Everyone is aware of this. Chief Minister (Devendra Fadnavis) has given his word in the Assembly and is making every effort to honour it," she said.

Family wants action, says Deputy Chief Minister

Sunetra Pawar said she had faith in the law and the Constitution and that the agencies investigating the matter were carrying out their responsibilities.

She said the agencies should be given adequate time to complete their work.

The Deputy Chief Minister also cautioned against drawing conclusions about the progress of the investigation based on the frequency with which those involved speak to the media.

"Constantly coming before the media does not necessarily mean that one is getting an update. There is a doubt whether a media trial is being conducted repeatedly," Sunetra Pawar said.

'No one can understand family's grief better'

She urged political leaders and others commenting on the matter to consider the grief being experienced by Ajit Pawar's mother, children and immediate family.

"Everyone should think about who could be more hurt by this than Ajit Dada's mother, his children and me," Sunetra Pawar said.

Her remarks came a day after Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar) Working President Supriya Sule raised questions over the progress of the investigation into Ajit Pawar's death.

Taking serious note of the IDP issue, the Chief Minister said that last month he had called representatives of six to seven joint associations of IDPs for discussions on the matter. The meetings were aimed at exploring ways to provide assistance and facilitate their resettlement.

Despite 36,000 IDPs having been resettled, the Government is still providing financial assistance to around 59,000 of the total 60,000 affected people.

The Chief Minister explained that even those who have returned home continue to face difficulties due to a lack of livelihood and earning opportunities. Therefore, the Government continues to extend monthly financial support to them.

Mental trauma remains a major concern

The Chief Minister emphasised that financial assistance alone cannot address the impact of a conflict that has continued for three years. The prolonged crisis has also caused mental trauma among affected people.

In this regard, the Health Department is taking steps to help reduce the trauma being faced by those affected by the conflict.

He also said he was discussing the matter with the Planning Department to explore further steps and initiatives for the rehabilitation and livelihood support of affected people.

He cited measures such as the Labour Department’s labour card as one possible avenue for extending support and creating employment opportunities.

Government seeks suggestions beyond political considerations

The Chief Minister stressed that the Government welcomes suggestions from all quarters and that the issue should be addressed without political considerations.

Government works to restore connectivity and trade

On the restoration of connectivity and economic activity, the Chief Minister said that following the successful resumption of the Imphal-Dimapur-Guwahati bus service, the Government is also working towards reopening the Moreh trade route.

Trust deficit remains biggest challenge

CM Khemchand Singh identified the trust deficit among communities as the most important challenge facing the State.

He assured the House that the Government is working towards rebuilding trust among communities and creating conditions conducive to the return of normalcy, resettlement, and the restoration of economic and social activities in the State.

Modi highlights growing role of Indian industry

The Prime Minister also pointed to the increasing partnership between ISRO and Indian industry, saying private and industrial participation was strengthening the country's wider space ecosystem.

"The growing partnership between ISRO and Indian industry is adding new strength and scale to our space programme and expanding India’s capabilities across the entire space ecosystem," he said.

The launch comes as India continues to expand its space capabilities and increase the role of domestic industry in the development, manufacturing and operation of space technologies.

GSLV-F17 lifts off from Sriharikota before dawn

The GSLV-F17 rocket lifted off successfully from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh, at 2:55 am IST on Friday.

The pre-dawn launch placed the EOS-05 satellite into its designated sub-geosynchronous transfer orbit, according to mission details.

ISRO Chairman Dr V Narayanan expressed satisfaction over the outcome of the mission and said the launch vehicle had precisely injected the advanced Earth observation satellite into its intended orbit.

The successful mission marked another operational flight of the Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle programme, which has played an important role in expanding India's ability to deploy heavier satellites.

Mission marks 19th flight of GSLV programme

Mission Director Thomas Kurian described the launch as a significant milestone for the GSLV programme.

He said the mission was the 19th flight of the GSLV and carried a specially configured Earth observation satellite designed to provide near-real-time imaging.

Kurian also said EOS-05 was the heaviest satellite placed by the GSLV into a geosynchronous transfer orbit or sub-GTO orbit.

He credited the successful mission to years of preparation and the work of scientists, engineers and other teams associated with the programme.

EOS-05 to strengthen India's Earth observation capabilities

The EOS-05 mission is intended to strengthen India's Earth observation capabilities by providing a continuous view of the country from an altitude of nearly 36,000 km above the Earth.

The satellite is expected to support advanced imaging and observation applications and is capable of providing data for a range of uses.

The GSLV-F17 launch vehicle stands 51.7 metres tall and has a liftoff mass of approximately 420.5 tonnes, making it one of India's major operational launch systems.

Jitendra Singh welcomes latest ISRO milestone

Union Science and Technology Minister Jitendra Singh also welcomed the successful mission, saying India's space programme continued to achieve important milestones and strengthen the country's position in the global space sector.

"EOS-05 is a state-of-the-art Earth Observation satellite and India's first imaging satellite from geosynchronous orbit, enabling advanced imaging across visible, infrared, multispectral and hyperspectral bands," Jitendra Singh wrote on X.

The move is aimed at helping Nepali authorities identify mortal remains recovered from flood-affected areas by comparing DNA profiles of unidentified victims with those of their relatives living in India.

The services will be made available through central and state-level forensic laboratories and other authorised facilities with DNA profiling capabilities.

DNA samples can be collected from parents, children and siblings

According to the Ministry of External Affairs, first-degree biological relatives residing in India, including fathers, mothers, sons, daughters and siblings of missing persons, may provide biological samples for DNA profiling.

Samples and DNA profiles can be processed at Central Forensic Science Laboratories, State Forensic Science Laboratories, laboratories of the National Forensic Sciences University and National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories-accredited facilities equipped to conduct DNA profiling.

The Centre's decision comes as authorities in Nepal continue efforts to identify bodies recovered following the flash floods that struck the country last week.

The death toll has risen to at least 1,259, according to Nepali authorities, while search and rescue operations continue in several affected areas.

Thousands remain missing after devastating floods

Emergency teams have rescued more than 12,000 people since the disaster, but around 5,000 people remain missing, according to the available figures.

The scale of the disaster has complicated efforts to identify recovered bodies, making DNA profiling an important part of the ongoing process.

The Embassy of India in Kathmandu had issued a press statement on Tuesday outlining information available regarding procedures for identifying the mortal remains of victims of the August 26 flash floods, the MEA said.

As an additional measure, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs has decided to make the services of central and state forensic laboratories, along with National Forensic Sciences University facilities, available for "DNA profiling of first-degree biological relatives of persons who remain missing following the flash flood in Nepal".

Nepal Police advises use of Autosomal STR DNA profiling

The MEA also shared a list of government forensic science laboratories in India with facilities for DNA profiling.

"As advised by the Nepal Police, Autosomal STR DNA profiling may be undertaken for the purpose of identification, subject to the technical requirements communicated by the Nepali authorities. The helpline number in this regard is: +977 9841 6160 95," the ministry said.

The DNA profiles, once prepared, along with preliminary information required by the Nepali authorities, can be sent for comparison with profiles obtained from unidentified mortal remains.

DNA profiles to be shared with Nepali authorities

According to the MEA, the information may be sent by email to dnacodis@nepalpolice.gov.np for comparison with DNA profiles recovered from unidentified mortal remains.

For facilitation and coordination by the Embassy of India in Kathmandu, a copy of the DNA profile may also be sent to eoikathmandufloodsupport@gmail.com.

The ministry said the process was intended to support the ongoing identification efforts and assist families searching for relatives who remain unaccounted for after the disaster.

Floods caused widespread destruction across Nepal

The flash floods, triggered by an ice-rock avalanche near the Nepal-Tibet border, devastated towns and villages in northern and central Nepal.

The disaster sent large volumes of water, debris and rocks through affected regions, damaging settlements and infrastructure and leaving a large number of people dead, injured or missing.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah also extended Janmashtami greetings to citizens and invoked Lord Krishna as a symbol of righteousness, ethics and public welfare.

Devotees observe the festival through fasting, prayers, bhajans, temple visits and midnight celebrations. Homes and temples are decorated for the occasion, while devotees adorn Krishna idols and prepare special offerings.

Mathura and Vrindavan, which are closely associated with Krishna’s life, witness elaborate celebrations during the festival. Janmashtami festivities are also held in several other parts of the country.

Khanal made the clarification on Thursday in response to reports attributing remarks to him about seeking climate-related compensation from neighbouring countries and major global powers.

"Neither I nor anyone in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or the government of Nepal has claimed or asked for compensation from India or any other country, including China or the United States," Khanal told ANI.

Nepal calls for global action on climate change

The Foreign Minister said Nepal's position was focused on the broader climate crisis and the growing impact of rising temperatures on Himalayan communities.

"Our call has been for the global community to look at this disaster from the perspective of climate change and the impact it's having in Nepal," he added.

Khanal said India, China and Nepal shared environmental ecosystems as well as cultural and historical links, making regional cooperation important in preparing for the consequences of climate change in the Himalayan region.

He said Kathmandu wanted the international community to look beyond immediate disaster relief and consider the longer-term effects of rising temperatures and climate change on communities.

"Our call is for all these three countries to come together to be better prepared, but for the global community to support and particularly to look at this disaster, not just as a one-time event or just to not look at it or to look at it as a one-time support, but to think about the impact raising temperature and climate change is having in communities across the world. So it is our call; the government of Nepal's call is for the global community to come together and support smaller nations like Nepal," he said.

Khanal added that Nepal shared "similar pain, similar burden, and similar challenge" with India and China.

"We stand ready to collaborate to save our civilisation, our heritage, our culture and our future together," he said.

India remains in contact with Kathmandu over relief needs

Khanal's clarification came as Nepal continued to receive international humanitarian assistance following the devastating floods.

Asked about communication with New Delhi regarding additional areas where Nepal may require support, Khanal said Indian officials had been in contact with Kathmandu from the immediate aftermath of the disaster.

"In this disaster context, right after the disaster, we began to receive communication from Indian officials and they have placed all kinds of support and they have said they are standing ready to provide any support that the government of Nepal needs," he said.

Khanal said India had provided relief supplies, rescue materials and forensic support and that the two governments remained in communication as new requirements emerged.

"We've been communicating as need arises and the government of India has fully supported our initiative. So in the future also, as new requirements come up, we communicate and they stand ready to provide support," he said.

India expands humanitarian assistance to Nepal

India expanded its emergency humanitarian response on Thursday by sending two additional C-130J aircraft carrying 21.5 tonnes of relief assistance to Kathmandu, including forensic kits and medical supplies, according to the Ministry of External Affairs.

India's first relief aircraft arrived in Nepal on August 26 with 10 tonnes of supplies, including temporary shelters, blankets, hygiene kits, solar lamps and medicines.

A second flight on August 27 carried 37.5 tonnes of relief material, including tents, blankets, hygiene kits, solar lamps, dewatering pumps, kitchen sets, generators, medicines and food items. A subsequent consignment carried another 10 tonnes.

India later sent a fifth aircraft carrying an 11-member rescue team, specialised equipment and 5.5 tonnes of essential medicines on Wednesday.

Khanal also expressed hope that India would support Nepal during the reconstruction and recovery phase, recalling New Delhi's assistance following the 2015 earthquake and other disasters.

"The Government of India has been very generous," he said, expressing gratitude to the Indian government and people.

"We are very hopeful that the government of India will stand with us in the stage of reconstruction as well," Khanal said.

Flood death toll rises to 1,259

Meanwhile, the death toll from the catastrophic Rasuwa floods in Nepal has risen to 1,259, according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority as of 7 pm on Thursday.

The authority said Chitwan recorded the highest number of recovered bodies at 355, including unidentified human remains. Nawalparasi East recorded 218 recovered bodies, followed by Nawalparasi West with 212, Nuwakot with 177, Rasuwa with 127, Gorkha with 72, Dhading with 60 and Tanahun with 38.

A total of 95 bodies have been officially handed over to families, according to the authority.

US also expands relief assistance

The United States has also expanded its humanitarian response to Nepal.

US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor said two US military cargo aircraft delivered 5,000 specialised disaster victim recovery supplies, 500 first aid kits, stretchers and front-end loaders to support Nepal-led search, rescue and recovery operations.

The disaster began after a catastrophic flash flood struck the Tibet-Nepal border on August 26, sending a powerful surge of water, sediment and boulders through the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli river systems and causing widespread destruction.

Having launched "Operation Economic Outcast" just last week to try to isolate Iran from its remaining global trade partners, the Trump administration also resumed strikes in recent days, prompting Iranian retaliation that has renewed concerns of an all-out regional war.

However, the combination of already intense sanctions on Iran and an off-and-on bombing campaign since the war began more than six months ago has not bowed the Iranian leadership and has left the administration struggling to find a way to wind down the conflict. Tehran has dug in its heels -- to Trump's frustration -- as energy prices rise, the global economy roils and poll numbers on the administration'' handling of the war dip ahead of November's midterm congressional elections.

Trump said Wednesday that he didn't think the conflict would last "much longer," but he again shrugged off suggestions that its unpopularity and high gasoline prices resulting from Iran's chokehold on the Strait of Hormuz would affect the elections for Republicans.

"It doesn't matter. And I'm not affected by the election," he told reporters. "I'm not running. But my party is running, and I'm going to help my party. But I think my party respects the fact that we're not allowing Iran to have a nuclear weapon."

A regional diplomat briefed on the matter described the current impasse between Tehran and Washington as reflective of both countries'' domestic priorities: the midterm elections for Trump and Republicans and the internal crises within Iran.

Domestic issues are critical reasons why neither side is willing to blink first, said the diplomat, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive negotiations.

The diplomat said negotiations, including those between Iran and Oman or even Iran and the US, will not go anywhere without addressing the initial catalyst of war: Israel. And the diplomat was sceptical of the Trump administration''s new sanctions plan, saying the threats require more explanation than what the US has provided so far.

The Trump administration's economic isolation of Iran is off to a slow start

The administration's new push for Iran's economic isolation was announced with great fanfare last week and a dire warning for all remaining countries to cut off financial and trade ties with Iran or face US retaliation -- but the campaign so far has fallen flat.

Just one branch of an Egyptian bank in the United Arab Emirates has been targeted so far. For actual sanctions to bite, experts agree that they must apply to Iran's main trading partners: mainly China but also India and Russia. But Trump is loath to target China, especially as he is preparing to host President Xi Jinping later this month.

Trump also insists that the US has control over the Strait of Hormuz, where one-fifth of the world's oil transits before the war began. The strategic waterway has been a key pressure point for Iran, and reopening it fully has become one of the prime goals for the US administration.

Ship traffic through the strait is well below pre-war levels due to the risk of attack if vessels don't comply with an Iranian vetting regime near its coastline, which is in sharp contrast to the unhindered navigation before the war. There were 102 transits last week and 126 the week before, according to shipping data company Lloyd's List Intelligence, compared with 130 or more per day before the war.

"As President Trump said, the strait is open, and all mines have been cleared," White House spokeswoman Anna Kelly said Thursday. "The naval blockade remains in full force and effect, and Operation Economic Outcast is underway to sever every remaining economic lifeline sustaining the regime."

The White House has repeatedly touted the economic impact that the sanctions have had on Iran, citing its rampant inflation and the massive loss in the value of its currency. US officials have described Iran's financial system as "one big house of cards."

Going forward, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said "the price" Iran will pay will be primarily economic, "but we reserve the right ... to take military action when necessary -- not just to protect ourselves but to prevent them from being able to threaten others as well."

"They're going to continue to feel the squeeze," he told Fox News host Brian Kilmeade in an interview that aired Wednesday. Vice President JD Vance said Thursday that he would not characterise the current situation as a "war" but that the administration would respond to any Iranian hostile action.

"Major combat operations are currently not ongoing, and they haven't been ongoing in a very long time," Vance told reporters during a White House briefing. "In fact, what we did just a couple of days ago is that we made it harder for the Iranians to shoot at commercial shipping again in order to ensure the flow of oil and gas into world energy markets."

Combining military force and sanctions on Iran is the only option,'' one analyst says

Complicating things for the US, Iran's leadership has shown signs of divisions between moderates more open to a diplomatic solution and hardliners who want to press ahead with a more confrontational approach.

President Masoud Pezeshkian is one of the most prominent voices still calling for a negotiated solution. But the hardliners appear to have gained the upper hand, and Iran shows no sign of backing down. Tehran continues to lash out at US interests and allies around the region in response to military strikes.

"This kind of a hybrid approach -- the combination of military force, blockade and economic pressure -- is the only option that seems to be available to the United States at this moment," said Hamidreza Azizi, senior Iran analyst for the International Crisis Group.

Still, he said, "it's been for a long time, but now maybe more than ever, a battle of endurance between the two sides." Amr Hamzawy, director of the Middle East program at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, pointed to two main reasons for the deteriorating situation.

"One, none of the two parties is satisfied with the outcome -- meaning that the current situation does not serve US interests well, and it does not serve Iranian interests well," Hamzawy said. The other reason is how leaders from both sides are perceived at home.

"The Trump administration is afraid of being portrayed in the US as an administration that failed to end a military campaign successfully, and that's going to impact the midterm elections," he said. "And the Iranians, especially the Revolutionary Guard, are quite afraid of appearing as if they are submitting to US sanctions with no actions on their side, which might hurt them domestically."

According to the FBI, Bedi operated a small grocery store in Tacoma, Washington, and swiped customers' government benefits cards to give them cash instead of food under the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Programme (SNAP).

Instead of selling food to participants, Bedi allegedly swiped their Electronic Benefit Transfer cards and gave them cash, keeping half of the proceeds for himself, the FBI said on Thursday.

The FBI claimed that Bedi, a naturalised US citizen, defrauded the US government of at least USD 6 lakh between March 2024 and June 2025.

Bedi operated a small grocery store in Tacoma called Asian Grocery Store. He purportedly sold food to SNAP participants using their EBT cards.

"A reward of up to USD 150,000 is offered for information leading to his arrest and conviction," the FBI said.

After being indicted for wire fraud and SNAP benefits fraud, Bedi was allowed to appear in court without being arrested.

He was ordered to surrender his passport and remain in Washington state.

However, Bedi soon drove across the border to Canada and then fled to India, the FBI said.

A federal arrest warrant was issued for Bedi on May 21 in a US district court after he was charged with Violations of Conditions of Supervision.

The EOS-05 satellite was successfully placed in the intended sub-geosynchronous transfer orbit, about 18 minutes after it lifted off from the spaceport, ISRO announced.

While several earth observation satellites operate from low earth orbit (LEO), the EOS-5 satellite is set to hover at an altitude of roughly 36,000 km above earth, which is the geosynchronous orbit and at that level, the satellite will match Earth's rotational speed.

At over 2,300 kg, this is the heaviest satellite ever to be carried by a GSLV and the satellite was perfectly ahead in its trajectory. "The eye in the sky," as one of the senior scientists involved in the mission described the satellite, is set to provide real-time imagery and help the nation in areas including agriculture, and disaster management.

The mission success, following some earlier failures, was apparently a morale booster. A beaming ISRO chief V Narayanan said: "I am very happy to announce that the GSLV F-17 vehicle has successfully and precisely injected the advanced EOS-05 geo imaging satellite in the intended and required orbit."

"This is the 107th launch from Srihariharikota and the 19th mission of GSLV," the Secretary, Department of Space, flanked by key scientists involved in the mission, said soon after the launch.

He recalled that the first launch of GSLV (D1) was done with a payload of 1,536 kg and since then, gradually, ISRO improved the performance of GSLV by optimising the structural mass, and improving the propulsion systems. "Today, we have injected the heaviest satellite 2,367 kg using this launch vehicle."

Once the EOS-05 is operationalised in the orbit, it will become India's first dedicated imaging satellite from the geo-orbit providing "strategic data" for the country, he said. Quoting satellite data, he confirmed that all the systems were operating perfectly well and that the solar panel has been successfully deployed. "The health of satellite is perfectly alright," he said.

"This is a great achievement for our country's space programme because this is the first EOS that will be placed on the geo platform for the national activities."

In the days to come, the orbit raising maneuvering will be done and the satellite will be elevated to required orbit and will be placed in the geo platform, he said, adding the success is the culmination of team work of ISRO and its industrial partners.

Mission Director Thomas Kurien said the mission carried uniquely configured EOS capable of near real time imaging. "It is the heaviest satellite ever launched by GSLV into a GTO or sub-GTO orbit," he added.

Project Director (Satellite) Imteyaz Ahamad described the EOS-05 as a unique, one of its kind satellite with multi-band operating capabilities. "It is a complex satellite in terms of configuration, content and capability."

Earlier, at the end of a smooth 27-hour countdown, which commenced at 23.30 hours on Wednesday, the rocket began its ascent on dot at 2.55 AM from the second launch pad at Satish Dhawan Space Centre. The odd hour and rain could not deter the enthusiasm of members of public as many, armed with umbrellas, turned up in good numbers to cheer the launch.

The 3-stage, 51.7 meter Geosynchronous Launch Vehicle (GSLV), with its third stage being cryogenic, has a lift off mass of 420.5 tonne and the heavy satellite is ensconced on the rocket nose cone. The GSLV-F17/EOS-05 mission is said to be a replacement for the unsuccessful GSLV-F-10/EOS-03 mission of 2021.

An onboard computer had aborted that mission at 307 seconds into the flight then. A probe into the post-flight data had indicated that an anomaly in the Cryogenic Upper Stage led to the mission failure, according to ISRO. The pre-dawn launch on Friday follows a gap of nearly eight months and brings ISRO its first success of the year.

On January 12, ISRO's PSLV-C62 rocket carrying 16 satellites failed to place them in the intended orbit after encountering an "anomaly" in the critical third stage of the launch. Days ago, ISRO chairman V Narayanan visited the Tirumala Tirupati Lord Venkateshwara Swamy temple and prayed for the mission's success.

"I wouldn't call it a war," Vance said after being asked during a White House press briefing about whether the fighting could be wrapped up before voters cast their ballots in the November 3 congressional elections. "Right now, there is no active shooting."

Vance's assertion came even as Iran fired at US Gulf ally Kuwait on Thursday as it continued to retaliate for rounds of US strikes on Iran earlier in the week. The vice president said the US had a "responsibility" to carry out this week's strikes because Iran continues the targeting of commercial vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz.

Vance's attempt to minimize the intensity of the fighting illuminates the difficult task at hand for Trump and his administration as he tries to persuade American voters to keep Republicans in control of Congress, even as the unpopular conflict - one the White House said at its outset would last a matter of weeks - has driven up gas prices and left consumers grappling with higher inflation.

Vance said he didn't want to set "artificial timelines." "But when you ask, ''When will this end?'' You're asking me a question like, ''When will the Iranians stop shooting at ships?" Vance said. "I think the reality is, I don't know the answer to that question. You would have to ask the Iranians."

The administration in July faced scrutiny after it reclassified four fallen soldiers as well as dozens of wounded troops in its Defence Casualty Analysis System, which Pentagon officials have repeatedly pointed to as the definitive source on the numbers of dead and wounded from the conflict.

Those killed or wounded in fighting after a brief ceasefire between the US and Iran fell apart were classified in a new category called "Overseas Operations" after initially being tallied in the totals from the war.

White House insists more oil is getting out of Gulf, but prices remain high

Brent crude prices hovered above USD 95 per barrel on Thursday. The international benchmark was around USD 72 per barrel the day before the conflict began.

Still, Trump and his aides have sought to push that the US Navy is in control of the Strait of Hormuz, which accounted for about 20 per cent of the flow of the world's oil prior to the start of the war. They insist a near pre-war level of Gulf oil is now making its way out of the critical waterway.

Vance at Thursday's press briefing said the US escorted about 15 million barrels of oil on Wednesday. This is after Energy Secretary Chris Wright told CNBC on Wednesday that 17 million barrels were carried through the strait on Monday with assistance from the US Navy. About 20 million barrels of Gulf oil flowed through the strait prior to the start of the war.

But ship traffic through the strait remains well below pre-war levels, according to independent firms that track marine traffic.

There were 102 transits last week and 126 the week before, according to shipping data company Lloyd's List Intelligence, compared with 130 or more per day before the war.

Over the past 28 days, 5 million barrels a day have exited the strait on average, according to TankerTrackers.com. Other recent estimates have varied from 2 million barrels per day to 6 million barrels per day.

Trump has tried to soothe volatile markets

Over the course of the war, Trump has repeatedly reported progress in negotiations or called off threats of military action at the last moment when global markets have become jittery. And markets have reacted swiftly to his public signals of peace or hints of progress.

"The administration is still jawboning oil markets," said Rosemary Kelanic, Middle East director at Defense Priorities, of the administration's claims of dramatically increased flows of oil. "And they appear to be doing it again to keep prices from going too high, so that they can extend the timeline before there's a worse price spike."

With Iran's refusal to back down in the face of the US military campaign, Trump has settled on a dual-prong approach that combines economic pressure with threats of an escalation in force, if necessary.

Trump has consistently emphasised that the campaign launched by the US and Israel has been devastating for Iran's navy and air force. Iranian officials have said the country has suffered USD 270 billion in direct and indirect damage.

Israeli military strikes in the first weeks of the war wiped out much of the theocratic government's leadership structure, including its Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Still, Iran has found leverage through its own strikes on the strait and Gulf allies of the United States. But the administration has sought to make the case that the waterway will become less important by the day, even as it asserts that more oil is getting through.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said in a Fox Business interview this week that the Strait of Hormuz will become a "worthless piece of water" within two years as new land pipelines planned for the region bypass the energy chokepoint.

Trump himself took to social media on Thursday to highlight a news report about Syria's effort to transform the port of Baniyas on the Mediterranean coast into a westward route to international markets for Gulf exporters.

Meanwhile, Iran and Oman have recently held talks to discuss a phased approach to jointly managing ship traffic through the Strait of Hormuz.

Trump settles into holding pattern before midterms, analysts say

The administration maintains it's making progress economically choking off Iranian hardliners, including the powerful Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. At the moment, it would be a leap for Trump to agree to any plan that puts Iran in position to claim control of the strait, analysts say.

"I find it hard to believe the president would agree to anything that hands back any modicum of IRGC control over the strait that has been wrested away," said Richard Goldberg, who served as a senior adviser on Iran policy in Trump's first administration.

Aaron David Miller, a senior fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, said Iran does not appear ready to "let Trump out of the box" despite the massive pain being inflicted on its economy.

At the same time, Miller said, Trump seems to have settled into a holding pattern ahead of the midterms - one in which he avoids both a return to the full-throttle bombardment of Iran and making any accommodations to Tehran on the Strait of Hormuz.

"The White House doesn't want a massive war, and they don't want to be seen as offering massive concessions," Miller said. "The tack they are taking avoids both of those things."

"India continues humanitarian assistance to Nepal. India dispatched two more aircrafts (C-130 Js) with 21.5 tonnes of relief assistance for Nepal, including forensic kits and medical supplies. The additional assistance will further strengthen ongoing relief and rescue efforts and support communities affected by the floods," the MEA said on social media platform X.

On Wednesday, a fifth Indian Air Force (IAF) plane landed in Nepal, carrying an 11-member rescue team with specialised equipment and 5.5 tonnes of essential medicines. According to MEA, the fresh tranche of relief material was handed over to the local government by Indian Ambassador Naveen Srivastava. The aid supports the ongoing response to catastrophic flash floods that struck Nepal following a glacial collapse in Tibet on August 26.

Earlier on Wednesday, taking to social media platform X, External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar said, "The fifth Indian aircraft has departed for Nepal. It is carrying an 11-member rescue team with specialised equipment, and 5.5 tonnes of essential medicines."

India has rushed more than 68 tonnes of emergency relief materials and specialised rescue teams to support Nepal following devastating flash floods.

Deliveries include blankets, sleeping bags, heavy-duty tarpaulins, plastic sheeting, and hygiene kits. The supplies also include essential medicines, food packets, solar lamps, water purification tablets, and portable generators.

Nepal Prime Minister Balendra Shah on Wednesday called for stronger international attention to growing climate-related risks in the Himalayan region as the death toll from devastating floods in the Bhote Koshi river crossed 1,100.

Addressing the House of Representatives, PM Shah said Nepal must highlight more forcefully the disasters it is facing due to climate change. Experts said an avalanche blocked the Lengde Khola, a tributary of the Bhote Koshi river near the Nepal-China border.

The accumulated water later breached the natural barrier, triggering a massive flood that swept downstream towards the Trishuli river and devastated settlements and infrastructure.
