Kamal Haasan meets Vijay

Kamal took to X (formerly Twitter) to share details about the meeting and the pictures. In the caption, originally in Tamil, he wrote that he was proud of the humility and affection that Vijay showed towards him. He wrote, “Today, I met in person with the Honorable Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Brother Vijay TVKVijayHQ, and conveyed my best wishes. He enthusiastically shared many dreams for the betterment of Tamil Nadu. The humility and affection he displayed during the meeting filled me with pride.” (sic)

He further went on to add, “I have made 6 important demands to the Tamil Nadu government, emphasising the need for support and warmth for the Tamil film industry, which is facing various obstacles. May the benefits flourish.”

A few days ago, when asked whether he had any advice for another actor from the film industry who has joined politics, Kamal had said, “My congratulations to the new government of Tamil Nadu. The closure of 717 liquor shops is a welcome move. It has been discussed for a long time and has now been implemented. It is appreciable." He added, “We should not just see Vijay as a film star. He has other responsibilities as well. Anyone can come to politics from any field. It is a matter of pride that Vijay has come to power from our industry.”

Six demands by Kamal Haasan

 A few hours after sharing about his meeting with Vijay, Kamal shared the demands he submitted in an official statement. The requests are as follows: 

• Launching Tamil Nadu government OTT platform, where Tamil audience can access Tamil cinema, independent films and documentaries, at affordable and subsidised rates.
• Abolition of the local body entertainment tax levied at 4 per cent.

• Forming a strong anti-piracy team by the creation of an anti-piracy enforcement team within the Tamil Nadu Police Cyber Crime Department.
• Permitting 5 shows per day for all films in Tamil Nadu. This aims at improving theatre revenues and supporting the recovery of the film exhibition sector.
• Mandatory enforcement of an 8-week OTT window for all films released in Tamil Nadu.
• Introduction of a film production incentive scheme to 10 per cent of the budget for Indian films that complete more than 50 per cent of their shooting in Tamil Nadu.

Malavika Mohanan slams media questions

In her post, she wrote, “I went for an event yesterday, and while I have the utmost regard for all the journalists and members of the Tamil Nadu media, a couple of them persistently asked some very distasteful questions that were completely unnecessary and sensational.”

Malavika added that she has had a friendly equation with Vijay for the last few years. “Thalapathy Vijay is someone I’ve known for the past seven years, someone I have a lot of respect for, and someone I’m grateful to call a friend. Watching his journey has been nothing short of incredible. I would really appreciate it if future media interactions could be kept respectful and considerate for the sake of everyone involved. In the video going viral from the event, Malavika was asked if Vijay had been going to a lot of places where actor and his rumoured girlfriend, Trisha, is also accompanying. As translated from the video, the reporter asked, "All the places where Viay sir is going, Trisha will be there. Do you have any idea how to travel with him?" To this, Malavika responded, "What all questions are you asking me?" Several users on social media also slammed the question and applauded Malavika for handling the situation with grace.

Malavika Mohanan recalls a memory with Vijay

Recently, Malavika, who starred with Vijay in 2021`s Master, recalled her first memory with Vijay. She told Variety India, “I met him for the first time on set and it was a very intense, challenging scene that we had to do on that day as well. So I was completely wrapped up in my lines, which I had received last minute. So I was trying to mug it up, and it was more like a quick ‘Hi’ before getting into my own world. He is very quiet and very disciplined on set, very observant. He’s completely tuned in. So that’s my earliest memory of him and then he went on to, of course, become a very dear friend and he is super fun. He is somebody I can call up and reach out to and he gives you that access, which I think is very sweet because not everybody does that. So I really admire him for that."

Buchi Babu Sana reveals Khushi Kapoor was the first choice for Peddi

During an interview with M9, Buchi shared, "I initially narrated the film to Khushi Kapoor. But once I saw her in person, I realised that she’s too young for this character. Now, imagine when I have to reject Khushi and give narration to Janhvi in the same home. I felt bad and asked Janhvi if Khushi didn’t take offence."

The filmmaker further explained why he thought Janhvi was a better fit for the role than Khushi, saying, "I explained why I rejected her sister. I looked at Khushi, told her hi, and said, I don’t want you in the film, I want your sister."

He went on to add that such decisions are often necessary for cinema. From the very beginning, he felt that the role was meant to be for Janhvi, adding that even while narrating the script to others, he could only imagine the Dhadak actress portraying the character.

Peddi is one of the biggest releases of the year. It is directed by Buchi Babu Sana and backed by Vriddhi Cinemas and Mythri Movie Makers. The film stars Ram Charan and Janhvi Kapoor in the lead roles, along with Jagapathi Babu and Shiva Rajkumar.

Ravi Mohan`s makes explosive claims against Aarti Ravi

Ravi spoke about his ongoing separation from his estranged wife, Aarti Ravi, and made serious allegations about the emotional distress and alleging that he has faced immense mental pressure involving her family during the divorce process. Ravi was seen getting emotional as he revealed that he had engaged in self-harm due to the stress.

Ravi shared, "They are not letting me meet my sons. My sons are being assisted by bodyguards. I entered marriage against the will of my parents. I am paying the price now for doing that. In fact, I slit my wrists and still showed up at the shoot the next day. That has been my commitment. I will definitely pass away one day. But I will finish their peace before departing from this world. I will not work in the industry anymore. I will clean my personal life, save my reputation, and then get back to my acting career."

He said that only under such circumstances did he agree to marry Aarti adding that he has been living a hellish life since day one.

Ravi Mohan claims Aarti controlled his finance

The actor also alleged that while he was married to Aarti, she controlled his finances through a joint bank account and would demand explanations for every expense he made. He stated that his parents were against his relationship with Aarti. He added that to date, he does not have a single personal bank account. Karuppu box office

According to trade tracker Sacnilk, the Suriya and Trisha Krishnan-starrer collected Rs 14.4 crore net on its opening day, while its gross domestic earnings stood at Rs 16.66 crore. The film also brought in Rs 4 crore from overseas markets, taking its worldwide gross collection to Rs 20.66 crore.

Of the total Rs 14.4 crore net collection, the Tamil version contributed the lion’s share with Rs 12 crore, while the Telugu dubbed version added Rs 2.4 crore. Across 4,891 shows on day one, the Tamil version registered an overall occupancy of 50.35 percent. Occupancy began at 24.54 percent in the morning shows, climbed to 45.92 percent in the afternoon, rose further to 53.31 percent in the evening, and peaked at an impressive 75.15 percent during night shows. Region-wise, Chennai led with 592 shows and a strong occupancy of 70.5 percent, while Bengaluru recorded 367 shows with a comparatively lower occupancy of 38.5 percent. The Telugu version posted an overall occupancy of 28.28 percent.

While Karuppu has managed a solid opening, its day-one numbers fall short of some of Suriya’s recent releases. His previous film Retro had opened at Rs 19.25 crore, while period action drama Kanguva had an even stronger start at Rs 24 crore net. For Trisha as well, Karuppu trails behind her recent big-ticket releases, including Thug Life, directed by Mani Ratnam, which opened at Rs 15.5 crore, and Good Bad Ugly alongside Ajith Kumar, which had a massive Rs 29.25 crore opening.

RJ Balaji gets emotional

RJ Balaji, who had an emotional breakdown on Thursday after the film failed to release, was seen celebrating on Friday morning. The director attended an FDFS (First Day First Show), where fans were seen hooting, whistling, and cheering as they watched the commercial entertainer.

Watching the audience’s overwhelming response, Balaji got emotional and expressed his joy by screaming and throwing his arms in the air. He was seen watching the film from the balcony alongside Karthi, brother of Suriya, and the film’s lead actress Trisha Krishnan.

After his celebratory moment, Balaji walked up to Trisha and warmly hugged her. Videos of his emotional celebration soon went viral on social media.

Pawan Kalyan faces pressure

Vijay’s historic win has now put Pawan Kalyan, actor and Deputy Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, under the spotlight, with many comparing his political journey to Vijay’s.

Pawan has now addressed these comparisons while speaking to party workers.

Speaking to party cadres at Jana Sena Party’s headquarters in Mangalagiri, Pawan, without directly naming Vijay, said, “Ever since the Tamil Nadu elections and him becoming Chief Minister, people are pressuring me.”

He added, “In our neighbouring state, an actor established a party and became the Chief Minister. A lot of people have messaged me saying I should have done the same in Andhra Pradesh.”

Using a Telugu idiom to explain the situation, Pawan said, “Uru lo pelli ki… edo hadavidi antaru kada (Like unnecessary excitement for a neighbour’s wedding). It’s like children running around without realising it’s not their family wedding.”

He further stressed that the political landscape in Andhra Pradesh is very different.

“As they said, I contested in the 2019 elections. What happened then? Even ministers did not stand by me. So, don’t compare,” he said.

Chiranjeevi congratulates Vijay

Meanwhile, Pawan Kalyan’s brother and superstar Chiranjeevi recently called Vijay and personally congratulated him on his political victory.

Keneesha hints at break up

Recently, Keneesha shared two videos on Instagram in which she opened up about the abuse she faced as a child, as well as an abusive relationship she was in before meeting Ravi Mohan.

She revealed that she had also suffered a miscarriage in that previous relationship. Keneesha said she initially met Ravi as a healer, but their bond soon evolved into a close friendship.

Keneesha and Ravi reportedly grew close around the same time as the actor’s divorce. Ravi had announced his separation in 2024 after 15 years of marriage.

After the delayed release, the makers shared posters for Karuppu. Suriya thanked fans and movie lovers for standing with the film’s team during the trying times. Trisha retweeted his post. When Trisha attended Vijay’s oath ceremony

Recently, Trisha attended her rumoured partner Vijay’s swearing-in ceremony as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium on Sunday (May 10). The actress grabbed attention as she appeared to be in a cheerful mood. Her mother, Uma Krishnan, also accompanied her. Trisha was seen warmly greeting Vijay’s family members at the venue.

Addressing filmmakers, producers, actors, distributors, OTT platforms, exhibitors, unions, and workers, Kamal wrote, “The continuing crisis in West Asia is deepening and the world is facing growing pressure on energy, trade, logistics, and economic stability. India too is inevitably feeling the impact of rising fuel, energy, logistics, and production costs.”

“The burden will inevitably fall on producers, workers, theatres, distributors, financiers, and the entire ecosystem. If cinema must continue to grow, we must ensure that every rupee spent serves the film, and not merely the appearance of scale,” he wrote.

However, Kamal strongly clarified that workers should never bear the consequences of economic corrections. He stressed that wages, safety, dignity, food, accommodation, transport, and humane working conditions must remain protected.

The actor also criticised unnecessary luxury spending, inflated entourage culture, excessive foreign shoots, and poor production planning. In one of the most talked-about sections of his note, Kamal questioned the industry’s obsession with overseas filming locations.

“Why must every love story bloom only in Paris, and every honeymoon end in Switzerland? Romance, fortunately, does not require foreign exchange. Indian cinema, and Indians, deserve a little more confidence in themselves and our beautiful country,” he stated.

Calling for collective action, Kamal urged the industry to adopt sustainable filmmaking practices through tighter schedules, smarter budgeting, reduced luxury expenses, energy conservation, and reuse of production materials.

“Extravagance has often been mistaken for scale. But some of our greatest films were made not with excess, but with clarity, discipline, and conviction,” he added.

Concluding the note, Kamal emphasised that cinema carries responsibilities beyond entertainment and urged the industry to place national interest above personal interest during challenging times.

Hombale Films acquires international distribution rights of Peddi

After redefining the scale of Indian cinema with blockbusters like KGF, Kantara, and Salaar, Hombale Films has now taken a significant step forward by venturing into international distribution, beginning with one of the most anticipated pan-Indian films of 2026, Peddi.

The production banner`s movies have consistently crossed language and regional barriers, creating a loyal audience base across India.  With Peddi, Hombale Films is set to directly strengthen its international footprint, marking this as the banner’s first official overseas distribution acquisition. The move is already being seen as a major boost for the film’s worldwide release prospects.

The banter between the cast, including Tovino Thomas, Vineeth Sreenivasan, and Shaan Rahman, along with their goofy jokes, became the core of the film’s promotions. While many viewers enjoyed the camaraderie, others found it a bit cringe. So, did the strategy pull audiences into theatres or push them away?

Now, a day after its theatrical release, the box office numbers seem to have answered that question and they have clearly favoured the film.

Directed by Arun Anirudhan, Athiradi also stars Riya Shibu alongside Basil and Tovino. The unique combination of cast members and the intriguing clash between a singer and a college boy added to the film’s appeal. Interestingly, the makers chose to release the trailer just a day before the film’s theatrical debut.

Box office numbers speak

Basil Joseph and Tovino Thomas have reportedly scored one of their career-best openings with Athiradi.

Given its strong pre-sales, the film was always expected to open well. According to a report by Koimoi, Athiradi began with a 26 percent occupancy in morning shows, which rose to 33 percent in afternoon shows. Evening shows recorded 45 percent occupancy, while night shows surged to an impressive 61 percent.

According to Sacnilk, the film earned approximately Rs 5.55 crore on Day 1 at the Indian box office, with nearly Rs 5.38 crore coming from Kerala alone.

The makers had also organised paid previews on Wednesday evening, which collected Rs 52 lakh, taking the film’s total domestic collection to Rs 6.07 crore.

In terms of gross revenue, Athiradi has reportedly earned around Rs 7.04 crore within India. Overseas collections added approximately Rs 3.50 crore, taking the film’s total worldwide gross to an estimated Rs 10.54 crore, including paid previews.

About the film

The story unfolds against the backdrop of a vibrant college festival. An energetic student named Samkutty, played by Basil Joseph, takes it upon himself to revive a long-banned campus festival.

His ambitions trigger an ego clash and turf war with a powerful local rival, played by Tovino Thomas. The equation further changes with the arrival of a third character, escalating the campus chaos.

The film is being produced by Basil Joseph’s production banner along with Doctor Ananthu Entertainments. Interestingly, after Minnal Murali, Athiradi marks the reunion of Basil Joseph, Tovino Thomas, Sameer Thahir, and Arun Anirudhan. The film’s script has been co-written by Paulson Skaria and Arun Anirudhan. 

The Suriya and Trisha Krishnan-starrer was initially scheduled for a May 14 release. However, just hours before the premiere, the makers announced that the shows had been cancelled due to unresolved financial issues among the producers.

The film finally hit theatres on Friday and received a roaring response from audiences.

Just a day earlier, RJ Balaji had broken down in his car while sharing an update on the film’s delayed release. He had apologised to fans who had booked tickets and were eagerly looking forward to the film.

On Thursday, an emotional Balaji shared a video in which he addressed the delay and apologised to audiences who had been waiting for Karuppu.

Speaking in Tamil, the director, who also plays a pivotal role in the film, said, “I am giving you another update from my car. I hope it’s the last one. I am really sorry to all the fans. It shouldn’t have happened.”

He added that people watch films to escape life’s worries, and apologised for causing stress to fans who were unable to watch the film as planned.

Balaji also revealed that he had always wished for Karuppu to release on May 14 and become a blockbuster.

“A lot of people have sacrificed so much. Suriya sir has done so much. I am sorry for the delay, but I hope it will all be worth it,” he said.

The director ended his emotional message on a hopeful note, saying, “Karuppan varan. We’ve faced so many hurdles, but I strongly believe the film will release. God is with us.”

Jailer 2 set tragedy

On Thursday, news agency PTI reported that the deceased crew member has been identified as Karthikeyan. As per preliminary police investigations, the 28-year-old suffered a fatal electric shock while working with the art direction department. The team was reportedly erecting a house-like set for the shoot of Jailer 2. 

Reports state that the Kanathur Police is currently investigating the matter to determine the circumstances that led to the electrical leak and Karthikeyan’s death. The police are yet to register an FIR in the matter.

Meanwhile, in April this year, even before the team wrapped up the shoot, the film faced a major leak. A clip from director Nelson Dilipkumar’s film surfaced online and quickly went viral. The video was reportedly shot on set and was widely circulated before eventually being taken down.

The leak prompted Sun Pictures, the production house backing the film, to issue a statement warning social media users against sharing the leaked clip. A spokesperson for Sun Pictures said, “Our anti-piracy team is actively monitoring the situation and will be taking necessary action to remove such content, including initiating measures against accounts involved in sharing or promoting these clips.”

The production house also urged fans not to share the clip, warning that such activity could lead to account restrictions or suspension.

Jailer 2 shoot update

In the second half of April, the makers of Jailer 2 announced that the shoot of the film had been wrapped. Sharing the update on social media, Sun Pictures wrote, “Alapparai Kelappurom, Thalaivaru Nerandharam! It’s a wrap for Jailer 2.”

The makers also shared pictures from a cake-cutting ceremony held to mark the completion of filming.

Ramya Krishnan reprises her role as Vijaya Pandian, aka Viji, the wife of Rajinikanth’s character Muthuvel Pandian. Sources also say that actress Mirnaa, who played Swetha Pandian, will have a pivotal role in the sequel.

Mohanlal and Vijay Sethupathi have also reportedly shot for the film. Music composer Anirudh Ravichander, whose score played a key role in the success of the first film, is composing the music for the sequel as well.

Makers apologise to audience

Taking to its X timeline to make an emotional announcement, Dream Warrior Pictures, the production house producing the film, wrote, "There are some journeys that test not just time, but the heart itself. To every person who waited for Karuppu who kept asking about the film, who never stopped believing in us even through the silence and delays — we owe you an apology, and more importantly, our deepest gratitude."

It further said, "We know this wait was painful. We know many of you held onto this film with so much love and expectation. Every delay weighed heavily on us too. But through every setback, it was your support, your messages, your faith, and your endless love that kept this dream alive. Today, with full hearts and tears of gratitude, we finally say: #Karuppu is releasing worldwide!"

About Karuppu release delay

For the unaware, the release of Suriya`s Karuppu, which was to originally hit screens on Thursday, was delayed because of financial hurdles. Negotiations by the producers to secure the film`s release did not bear fruit, forcing the makers to cancel the morning shows scheduled for Thursday.

Even as the makers continued to make intense efforts to find a way to ensure the film`s smooth release on Thursday, the film`s director RJ Balaji had tendered a heartfelt and emotional apology to all the fans who had turned up at theatres to watch the first show of the film on Thursday morning, only to return home disappointed.

The delay in the film`s release caused emotional distress to the director who broke down while giving an update on the status of the film`s release. During his video address, which he shared on his Instagram page, director R J Balaji had said, " I am sorry. It shouldn`t have happened. We watch a film only to come out of the problems that we have in our minds, at our homes, in our lives. To make watching a film itself stressful, and for being unable to watch the film, I am really sorry. I too did not expect this. I am really hopeful that this evening, by 6 pm, all these problems will get resolved and the film will release," he said, even as his eyes gave away the fact that he had been weeping.

Unable to keep a straight face at one point, the director broke down, saying, "I have thought about this on many days -- that my film `Karuppu` will release on May 14 and it would go on to emerge a big blockbuster.I have manifested this."

What Naga Vamsi said

Ravi Shankar of Mythri Movie Makers, Naga Vamsi, and other members of the Producers Guild recently held a press conference to discuss the ongoing issue. At the press meet, Vamsi said, “People will come to theatres if you develop single screens over multiplexes. Look at Vizag, single screens there generate more revenue than plexes.”

The producer added, “One big exhibitor has had Mallikarjuna and Brahmaramba theatres under lease for years now. Instead of doing that, they are developing the multiplexes around them. If you really cared about movie theatres, why don’t you stop feeding multiplexes and give movies to single screens instead? But when someone else is making a big film, you suddenly remember exhibitors and single screens.”

Suniel Narang hits back at Naga Vamsi

Meanwhile, Suniel, at a press conference ahead of Vamsi`s comment with Sireesh, Dil Raju`s brother, and other members of the Telangana Exhibitors Association, said, “Isn’t it better for all of us to develop single screens instead of them shutting down? There is no targeting one film or anything. We have been asking for so many years, and producers are promising us they are not completing the issue. They always say we will sit, but they aren’t. Kindly help us save single screens and upgrade them.”

Now, following Vamsi’s press meet, during an interview with TV9, Suniel was seen speaking to someone off the screen and said, “Wo kya naam hai beta? Wo producer rehta, chashma pehenke, vo duplicate baal rehta. Naga Vamsi, paamu…sorry, Naga Vamsi. (What’s his name son? The producer who wears spectacles and has duplicate hair. Naga Vamsi, snake…).” Suniel seemingly took a dig at Vamsi`s name Naga, which refers to a divine or semi-divine, half-human, half-serpent being in Hindu mythology.

Suniel also stated that Vamsi claimed he builds multiplexes wherever he finds land, but he is actually building numerous single screens and booking them instead. 

Additionally, Narang`s daughter, Jhanvi Narang, also hit back at Vamsi on X (formerly Twitter). Sharing a map of where their theatres are located, she wrote, “Our company was built on the idea of renovating single screens to provide a hygienic and clean family experience. When the root of my company stems from single screens, its absurd anyone questions why we worry about the plight of the very same single screens.”

Theatre owners confirm Karuppu shows cancelled

Sharing an update on X (formerly Twitter), Ruban Mathivanan, owner of GK Cinemas in Chennai, stated, "Karuppu - All shows are cancelled today. Team is trying to release it Tomo, will update once Distributor confirms us. Refund is initiated for both online and counter. (sic)."

Similarly, Coimbatore’s Broadway Cinemas confirmed the news by writing, “Karuppu evening and night shows have been regrettably cancelled. We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience caused (sic)."

Karuppu morning shows cancelled

The development comes after the film`s morning and afternoon shows were cancelled on Thursday. Amid the delay, Director RJ Balaji shared an emotional video message apologising to fans who had travelled to theatres, saying he had not expected the disruption.

In a video message, a teary-eyed Balaji said he was hoping that the issues would be resolved and that the film could still be released at 6 pm. In the video, he shared, "I am giving you another update from my car. I hope it`s the last one. I am really sorry to all the fans. It shouldn`t have happened. You must have travelled from long distances to reach the theatres in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and other states to watch the film at 9 am. It shouldn`t have happened, and I am sorry for that."

The delay is reportedly linked to reported financial issues surrounding the film, including more than Rs 50 crore in unpaid dues associated with Dream Warrior Pictures, headed by SR Prabu. According to reports, Suriya had intervened in clearing dues related to Karuppu, while the production house would address the remaining issues separately.

Karuppu stars Suriya and Trisha Krishnan, with Yogi Babu, Jaffer Sadiq, Mansoor Ali Khan and Indrans in supporting roles. The film`s music is composed by Sai Abhyankkar, cinematography by GK Vishnu and stunt choreography by Anbariv. 

Massive cancellation leads to protests outside theatres

The film, directed by RJ Balaji and starring Suriya alongside Trisha Krishnan, had generated massive buzz ahead of its release. Special 9 AM shows were approved in Tamil Nadu due to high demand, and industry trackers predicted that the action drama could earn nearly Rs 25 crore on its opening day. However, last-minute release hurdles disrupted those expectations.

According to reports, confusion began early Thursday morning when several theatres either paused online bookings or cancelled screenings without prior notice. Fans who had booked first-day-first-show tickets arrived at theatres only to learn that the shows would not take place. In Puducherry, disappointed Suriya fans reportedly gathered outside a theatre and staged protests after the cancellations. Videos from the scene quickly spread across social media platforms.

Producer SR Prabhu later issued an apology and confirmed that the disruption happened because of “unavoidable reasons.” While the makers did not initially reveal the exact cause, reports later suggested that financial and distribution-related issues may have delayed the film’s release process. Theatre owners also reportedly faced uncertainty regarding booking permissions and screening schedules.

Suriya`s fans demand an answer 

Director RJ Balaji addressed fans through an emotional statement on social media, admitting that he did not have a concrete answer regarding the sudden situation. He assured audiences that the producers were trying their best to resolve the issue and maintained faith that the film would eventually release smoothly. Later in the day, another emotional video from Balaji went viral, where he appeared teary-eyed while apologising to disappointed fans.

Reports also claimed that Suriya personally stepped in to help resolve the financial hurdles affecting the release. Sources suggested that discussions were underway with distributors and financiers to ensure the film could resume screenings soon.

Karuppu has been one of the most-awaited Tamil films of 2026. The movie marks Suriya’s collaboration with RJ Balaji and features him in a mass-action avatar. The film’s trailer, songs, and promotions had created strong excitement among fans in recent weeks.

A source told mid-day, “Choosy as ever, Akshaye agreed to play Asura guru Shukracharya as he was intrigued by the role. In Hindu mythology, he was the revered teacher of the Asuras and advised them in their battles against the gods. His primary role was to revive the dead demons, while Maa Kali’s role was to destroy the demon army. That put them on opposite sides of the conflict. Shukracharya is considered a knowledgeable sage rather than inherently evil. He is a misunderstood character in Indian scriptures, and Akshaye loved that complexity.”

CM Vijay increases efforts to release Jana Nayagan

According to an India Today report, sources said that Vijay has asked producer KVN Productions` Venkat, who was attending the Cannes Film Festival, to return to Chennai. Following the instructions, Venkat is now heading back amid the latest developments around the film.

Sources also told the portal that efforts are now underway to secure the required approvals, as the film has been lying with the revising committee for several months now. Once the clearance is issued, the makers will get to work to facilitate the film`s release.

Jana Nayagan-CBFC row

For the unversed, Jana Nayagan has been stuck with the CBFC since December over certain scenes that were believed to have the potential to hurt public sentiments. Reportedly, the film was also held because of its political content, which the board saw as potentially influential in the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, which Vijay was contesting for the first time. Vijay made his electoral debut with his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), in the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections 2026 and secured a historic win. 

The makers of the film had moved the court after the CBFC flagged the scenes, seeking a censor certificate ahead of the film`s planned release on January 9.

Following a month-long legal standoff, the film was eventually postponed. Later, the makers withdrew their case against the CBFC and agreed to send the film to the revising committee. Ever since, there has been no official update on the certification process. 

Amid the CBFC delay, the film also ran into trouble after an HD print was leaked online on April 9. The Tamil Nadu Cyber Crime Police arrested nine people, including three key accused, following the leak.

Ahead of the massive reveal of the first glimpse of NTRNeel at midnight on 19th May, the makers dropped a picture showcasing a man standing in the desert with a stick. This has only heightened the curiosity around what is about to unfold. They captioned it:

The film has triggered huge interest in fans and film buffs ever since the project was announced. Unconfirmed reports claim that the film will also feature Bollywood actor Anil Kapoor and Biju Menon. Recent reports also claim that Shahid Kapoor is in talks to star as the villain in the film.

It may be recalled that Jr NTR had joined the sets of the film on April 22 last year.

He added, "People watch movies to forget the worries in our lives. I am really sorry to all those who were stressed after learning that they couldn`t watch the film. I didn`t expect this either. I am really hopeful that the film would release at 6 pm after the issues get resolved."

RJ Balaji said he had always wished for the film to release on May 14 and become a success. "I manifested that Karuppu would release on May 14 and would become a blockbuster. I am very hopeful. I am tearing up, that`s my pain. Everyone is working towards releasing the film today evening at 6 pm."

He further added, "A lot of people have let go of so many things. Suriya sir has done so much. Sorry for the delay, and sorry for making you go through this stress. But, I am hoping that it would all be worth it. I believe that the film would release today evening, and you would all like it," addressing the efforts put in by the entire team.

The director ended his video message on a hopeful note. He said, "As I always say, Karuppan varan. We`ve faced so many hurdles and continue to face it. But, I strongly believe that the film would release this evening. God is with us. All will be good. I am sorry again, and I hope you all like the movie."

RJ Balaji on Karuppu delay

Amid the delay, the film`s director RJ Balaji  put out a post on X, exuding faith in God and urging fans to keep the faith, saying the film would definitely release on Thursday.

Taking to his X timeline to give an update to fans, RJ Balaji said, "Dearest fans, I don`t have a concrete answer to the current situation. Producers are doing their best to solve the hurdles. Actress Trisha plays the female lead in this film, which will also feature Malayalam actors Indrans, Sshivada, Swasika and Tamil actors Yogi Babu and cinematographer and actor Natty in pivotal roles.

The film has music by young music sensation Sai Abhyankkar, and cinematography by GK Vishnu, the very same cinematographer who impressed with his work in films like Vijay`s Bigil, Jawan and Mersal.

R Kalaivanan is the editor of this film, which had Vikram Mor choreographing stunts for the film and Arun Venjaramoodu as its art director.  

Through the podcast, the actress hopes to challenge the way society dismisses younger people simply because they are considered “too young.”

Sonali said in a statement: “I am extremely fond of young people. They have original ideas, they think out of the box, they are fearless and absolutely innocent. I have worked with so many talented young artists as well. But over the years, I have realized many adults are very quick to dismiss young people and their opinions.”

She added: “Whether it is making family decisions, travel plans, financial choices, or even simple everyday matters, children are rarely asked what they feel. I feel there is a lot of emotional violence when it comes to younger people.”

As per the statement, the podcast format has been intentionally designed to remain organic and authentic. Every episode begins with a conversation with a full ticket, an adult figure such as a parent, teacher, or psychologist, followed by the main interaction with the half ticket, a child guest who is on the journey towards becoming a ‘full nagrik’.

“The main segment is with the ‘half ticket’ who is going to become a full ‘nagrik’ very soon. I meet them directly in the studio because I want the spontaneity to remain intact. I talk to them about their world, our world, their fears, their concerns and their thought process.”

“The basic rule is that not a single guest should feel uncomfortable or pressured. You will be surprised to see how children use their autonomy and they are so insightful. There is so much to learn from them” Sonali stated.

Each episode, Sonali presents each child guest with the Indian Tri-colour and a special trophy carrying the message “India is my country and I am a proud Indian.”

Riya`s casting sparks age debate 

After Riya`s casting in the film was announced, netizens pointed out the massive age gap between the two actors. While Riya is all of 21, Vikram is 60. The 39-year-old age gap between the two leads did not sit well with several citizens. The pattern of older male actors romancing younger actress is not new but it often gets called out. However, the equation between Riya and Vikram`s characters in the film has not been unveiled yet. 

However, netizens have expressed their displeasure at the massive age gap. A netizen pointed out that Vikram`s son Dhruv is also older than Riya. "Why small girls bro? Previously @mirnaliniravi and now this girl," mentioned another X user. 

More about Chiyaan 63

The film`s story has been written by director Anand Shankar himself and is to be produced by Sendhil Thyagarajan and Arjun Thyagarajan. The film will have music by Santhosh Narayanan and cinematography by R D Rajasekar. Production design for the film is by Rajeevan while dialogues are by Shan Karuppusamy. The film will have editing by Raymond Derrick Crasta and art direction by Surya Rajeevan. Costumes for the film are by Poornima Ramaswamy.

It may be recalled that IANS had reported in March this year that Anand Shankar would be directing actor Vikram`s next film. One of India`s finest actors, Vikram, fondly called `Chiyaan` Vikram by his fans, had in February this year announced that he was to do four films with directors that he deeply admired.

Taking to his Instagram page to make the announcement, Vikram had said, "Sometimes silence is preparation. I spent this year waiting for stories that moved me. Grateful to now begin four films, each very different, with directors I deeply admire. I can’t wait to share these journeys with you. Anban, Chiyaan!"

Sources close to the actor had then confirmed to IANS that one of the four films that Vikram was referring to would be with director Anand Shankar.

Sung by Rasha and IP Singh, the track has been composed by Faridkot (Rajarshi Sanyal and IP Singh). The lyrics have been penned by Sidharth-Garima and Singh.

Jr NTR`s team issues clarification on charity drives

In a statement, the actor`s team said, "It has come to our attention that certain fan groups have been organising charity drives and raising funds in the name of Mr. NTR.
