Reflecting on his knock, the left-handed batsman said that he knew that the West Indies' bowlers had a plan against him and he wanted to play better than that.

"I wouldn't say it was deliberate, but it was there in my mind that they had a plan against me. (With the) off-spinner bowling against me, it was just a battle between him and me. I gave him respect in the first over because he is bowling really well in this series, so it is just the plan that went pretty well for me as well," he said.

"In the powerplay, I was trying to just get a few runs and they had a plan for me, and I had to play better than that," added Abhishek.

During the match, he entertained the crowd by smashing five towering maximums. Speaking on the sixes, he said that it just plays the shots according to the field placement.

"I don't think and play deliberately. It just happens when I see the field placement, whenever they have a field placement which allows me to just give myself room and play those shots," said the 26-year-old cricketer.

After the match, the visitors' skipper Shai Hope said that they could have executed their plans better with the ball and used the pitch conditions well.

"Little things that you pick up can be defining moments, whether you get off your line. Winning team as opposed to losing one. So, probably with the ball, could have executed a little bit better, maybe used the surface a bit more, and a few runs we probably let through on the boundaries. Those small little margins could be the deciding factor at the back end of any game," he said.

Following the victory, Team India's skipper Shreyas Iyer heaped praise on the bowlers by saying that they were confident in executing their plans during the game.

"It was wonderful, honestly. When the bowlers were up to the mark, they were pretty confident in terms of what they wanted to execute, and the clarity was very much visible when I was interacting with them. So they were decisive in their execution, and I also feel that when I was passing on the ball to them, each and every one, they were ready to take on the challenge, and that is what we want," he said.

He then gave special mention to swashbuckling batsman Abhishek Sharma, who smashed 69 runs in 30 balls, including six boundaries and five maximums. He also highlighted Ishan Kishan's contribution with the bat and stated that Prince Yadav's cameo was important.

"That was a phenomenal start, what we got from Abhishek - those crucial runs in the powerplay. We know what he can offer, and then Ishan coming in and taking on the bowlers. He has been simply remarkable in the last couple of months. And then in between also, we never let West Indies take on the charge, even though we kept on losing wickets. We steadied the ship in the middle order as well. That took us to a commendable total of 223. Even Prince coming and playing that cameo at the end, those were useful runs, I felt," Iyer added.

With this, the "Men in Blue" have taken a lead by 2-1. The fourth T20I match between the teams will be played on October 14 at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium in Hyderabad.

“Till Hardik was 19, he was a pure No. 4 batsman in Baroda. Hyper and athletic, cricket became the way to channel his energy,” Mahieka wrote to her 723,000-strong Instagram following.

She also highlighted his poor education and a probable learning disability.

“Barely educated, poor, socially excluded and considered a rebel because he never learnt the performative norms common to those with conventional upbringing. He didn’t seem to be getting any favours either. There also wasn’t any infrastructure in the locality to identify if he had a learning disability, which he described as ‘numbers and words flying around.’ But he had a knack for working like a horse, and this was his biggest cheat code. Four-time Formula 1 champion Max Verstappen cruised to a first-ever Singapore Grand Prix win with the Dutchman easing his Red Bull across the line after a dominant lights-to-flag display around the Marina Bay street track on Sunday.

The 29-year-old crossed the finish line 7.3 seconds clear of Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc with championship leader Kimi Antonelli completing the podium for Mercedes in third place.

Verstappen delighted

“It has taken a while, but I think this race was very good. We had pace when we needed to have it, on the soft tyre and the medium. Luckily [the start] was good enough,” said Verstappen after taking his 73rd win, and second of the season.
 
Leclerc, starting alongside the Red Bull on the front row, got the better getaway and looked to have the more advantageous inside line heading into the opening corner.

But Verstappen hung on through a brilliant display of race craft and car positioning that forced Leclerc to concede.

From that point on, there was no looking back, with the Dutchman remaining unchallenged and even keeping the lead through the pitstops. The only trouble he had was a malfunctioning radio.

The result also meant Antonelli extended his championship lead to 102 points after teammate and closest title rival George Russell finished ninth. By the next race, the 20-year-old could become the youngest F1 champion and the first Italian title winner since Alberto Ascari in 1953.

Antonelli, who had started fourth and charged past McLaren’s Lando Norris and Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton in the closing stages, was stunned to find out he was within reach of the title.

“Can I really?” He asked when told that he could be world champion in the next two weeks.

“Let’s not worry about that, let’s just try to do the best weekend possible and finish the job,” he added.

Race to forget for Lewis

Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton though endured a nightmare race. He started third and kept the position in the opening part of the race. Despite running on the more durable medium tyre, he was the first of the front runners to stop.

That was the only stop he made, despite switching to the more fragile soft tyre, and faded from contention towards the end as first Antonelli, then Norris and eventually McLaren’s Oscar Piastri eased past him, leaving the seven-times champion to limp home in sixth.

A collective bowling effort from Australia saw SA bowled out for 284 in their first innings — Mitchell Starc (2-63), Josh Hazlewood (2-54) and Nathan Lyon (2-58) took two wickets each. 

Australia was 33-0 at stumps in 5.4 overs when play was called off early again due to bad light.

The New Zealand selectors have split the squad into three groups, with only six players -- Mitchell Santner (captain), Michael Bracewell, Mark Chapman, Jacob Duffy, Will Young, and Blair Tickner -- named for all five ODIs. Devon Conway, Matt Henry, Kyle Jamieson, Tom Latham, Daryl Mitchell, Glenn Phillips, Rachin Ravindra, and Nathan Smith will feature exclusively in the first three matches starting with the game at Eden Park in Auckland.

Following the third game, these Test specialists will leave the squad to prepare for the longer format in Wellington. He added, "Obviously every Test match is important for us in terms of championship points, which is why we're extracting some of that squad early for additional preparation before the first Test against India at the Basin Reserve on November 19." While the Mumbai team had to grind it out on a tough Day 1 of their Ranji Trophy season-opener against Chandigarh at the Wankhede Stadium on Sunday, a few kilometres away, India’s T20 World Cup-winning captain Suryakumar Yadav, who was not picked for this Ranji match, also didn’t have a great outing personally, though his club and hosts MIG Cricket Club, comfortably beat Muslim United SC in a MCA President Cup T20 encounter.

Skipper Suryakumar led his team to a five-wicket win, while 42-time Ranji champs Mumbai struggled to assert themselves initially before reaching 249-5 at stumps in their Elite Group ‘D’ match.

Batting at No. 3, Suryakumar, struck three stylish cover drives to the fence in his 10-ball 17 before being stumped by Moin Khan off left-arm spinner Karan Bhanushali. Though his stay was brief, the Mumbai and India veteran provided a glimpse of his attacking intent nevertheless as his team chased down the opposition’s 153-7 with 4.2 overs to spare.

At Wankhede, meanwhile, Mumbai’s batting required patience and resilience after an early setback. India Test opener Yashasvi Jaiswal was dismissed for a duck, edging a cover-drive attempt to Shivam Bhambri at second slip off Chandigarh pacer Jagjit Singh Sandhu (1-53).

Young opener Ayush Mhatre (48; 7x4, 1x6) and Musheer Khan (65; 4x4) steadied things with a 76-run partnership. However, Rohit Dhanda (3-44) dismissed both batters before trapping Sarfaraz Khan (1) leg-before in his next over, leaving Mumbai struggling at 144-4 just before tea.

With the middle order faltering, skipper and No. 4 Siddhesh Lad stepped up, striking eight boundaries during his nearly four-and-a-half-hour stay, also bringing up 5,000 first-class runs for Mumbai, during his unbeaten 80.

Lad found an able ally in spin-bowling all-rounder Shams Mulani (27 not out), with the pair putting on an unbroken 65-run stand for the sixth wicket. Mumbai head coach Omkar Salvi praised Lad’s commitment to red-ball cricket. 

He [Lad] is very passionate about red-ball cricket and that helps both him and the team. Also, the calmness with which he guides the younger players is an advantage as they can go out and express themselves,” said Salvi, also admitting that his team did well to weather the early storm and steady the innings later.

“We saw what was happening in the morning and how the ball was moving. But the way our batters applied themselves, remained calm and backed their game plans was good to see,” he added.

The coach also welcomed the presence of India’s 1983 World Cup-winning cricketer and Mumbai team mentor Sandeep Patil in the dressing room, saying his experience and guidance would benefit the players.

Meanwhile, in another Ranji Trophy match at the Cricket Club of India, pacer Devendra Singh Bora shone bright for Uttarakhand with figures of 5-49 to help restrict Railways to 278 all out in 87.5 overs. Opener Vivek Singh scored 112 off 220 balls for Railways.

Race dynamics

Only 5 runners faced the starter as Rampage was a late withdrawal from the six-horse field, and Iron Mirage, trainer Prasanna Kumar's challenger from Bangalore, ridden by Akshay Kumar, hit the front as usual. What was unusual though was that it wasn't the usual blazing fast pace, but rather, a moderate pace (600m in 38.6s) which jockey P Trevor astride Beast Mode read perfectly, and chose to stalk the leader, while Vivek on Jaandaar took things easy in the early part, preferring to race behind even Avener (A Sandesh up). As the pace heated up approaching the final turn Vivek, in a desperate bid to improve position, realised he was badly pocketed at the 400m marker with Beast Mode in front, Iron Mirage on the right, and Avener on the left. 

However, Jaandaar was so superior to them all that the moment Vivek forced his way between Beast Mode and Avener, it was all over bar the shouting, though Sandesh astride Avener tried to desperately bridge the gap, but did not make any impression, except reducing the margin of victory to less than a length. 

Jaandaar (Earthlight - Dance Awhile) raced in the silks of Vijay Shirke, who owns him in partnership with his wife and son, and was bred at the Sohna stud farm.

Coming to the ODIs, the batter is WI's second-highest century-getter with 21 tons, just five away from toppling Chris Gayle (25 tons). Hope has scored 6,590 runs at an average of 51.48 with 21 tons and 32 fifties in 158 matches and 152 innings.

This year is shaping up to be WI skipper's best year across formats, with 1,229 runs scored in 27 matches and 28 innings at an average of 53.43 and a strike rate of almost 88, including four centuries and seven fifties, including a best score of an unbeaten 162 runs.

Currently, the five-match T20I series is tied at 1-1. Both teams will lock horns with each other in the third T20I match on October 11 at the Holkar Cricket Stadium in Indore.

“I have been working with [former India left-arm spinner] Sunil Joshi sir at the Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru and [former India batter and selector] Jatin Paranjape sir at the Vasoo Paranjape Cricket Centre in Bandra. I’m working on my skills, and I think these Ranji Trophy games will be crucial for me to perform well and earn a place in the [Test] side,” Kotian told reporters on the eve of the Ranji Trophy opener on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Chandigarh, led by Manan Vohra, will be eager to make an impression against the 42-time champions in their first match against Mumbai at the Wankhede Stadium. The team will also look to benefit from the appointment of new head coach Vinayak Samant.

“The Wankhede is a good place to play cricket, and facing a side like Mumbai is a great opportunity. The bigger the team, the bigger the opportunity for us to shine, both as individuals and as a team. So, I’m looking forward to it.

“He [Samant] has been talking about some good things, and tactically, I think he is going to help us a lot. He has been with Mumbai, has won a couple of trophies, and I’m sure that experience will really help the team,” said Vohra, who has scored 3,992 runs in 70 first-class matches.

“If you look at the context of the game, it was a game-changing, match-winning spell. The way he changed his lines was important on this wicket. But against dangerous teams like West Indies, we need to find a way to defend totals,” Gambhir said in the post-match press conference.

“You have to keep changing your lines and make the batters guess. If you keep bowling the same line and length, they can settle in. He bowled at the batters’ legs, went wide and bowled full. He kept changing his approach, and those variations are very important on wickets like these,” Gambhir said.

India posted 249-5, powered by Samson’s 82 and rapid knocks from Shreyas Iyer and Tilak Varma, but West Indies chased down the target in 18.3 overs. “I don’t blame anyone or anything. The bottom line is that we could not defend 250. They batted extremely well and deserved to win. We still have a lot of work to do,” he added.

Mayank Yadav dropped a sitter as Sherfane Rutherford went on to score 84 in a match-winning 120-run partnership with Shai Hope (102 not out).

“Catches get dropped. Nobody drops catches intentionally, so you cannot blame anyone for that. I don’t know if there is a safe total. We thought 250 was a good score, especially after taking two early wickets. But credit to the West Indies for what they achieved,” he added.

After opting to bat in the three-day final, Mumbai posted 326, with skipper Devashish Ghodke scoring an unbeaten 121 and Shreyas Khilare contributing 106. 

In reply, Punjab were bowled out for 228, thanks to a disciplined bowling performance by left-arm spinners Darshan Rathod (5-40) and Harsh Kadam (2-21).

Mumbai consolidated their position in the second innings, posting 272-3, with Kadam (131 not out) and Aarush Kolhe (101) scoring centuries.

“We came to know our pluses and minuses, and the players also understood what needs to be done while playing competitive cricket. This triumph is a big boost for the team ahead of the U-16 Vijay Merchant Trophy,” Mumbai U-16 head coach Nilesh Masurkar told mid-day over the phone from Vadodara on Saturday.
