This requirement is effective immediately and will remain in place until October 15, 2026.

Situated at altitudes ranging from 3,600 to 4,600 metres within the Dhauladhar range, these routes include Baleni, Minkiani, Bhimghasutri, Indrahar, Kundli, Toral, Talang, Singhar, Varu, and Jalsu Pass.

Disaster management check-posts will be established at the starting points of all these routes, operating daily from 5 am to 5 pm, officials said.

While issuing the orders, Deputy Commissioner (DC) Kangra, Hemraj Bairwa, emphasised the heightened dangers associated with trekking during the monsoon season, which can bring landslides, dense fog, flash floods, poor visibility, and slippery trails.

"In many instances, search and rescue operations become prolonged, challenging, and resource-intensive because trekkers fail to provide prior notification of their journey or details regarding their intended route. This jeopardises the safety of not only the trekkers but also the members of the rescue teams," he said.

He said that it is mandatory for every individual or group intending to traverse these identified routes to register in person at the respective check-post before commencing the trek. "Additionally, they must provide details of their itinerary, contact information, and the expected time of return," he added.

"If any individual or group engages in trekking without registration, or deviates from the designated route without prior intimation and subsequently falls victim to an accident or disaster, the services of private rescue teams will be engaged for their rescue if necessary. The expenses incurred during such rescue operations will be recovered from the concerned individual or group," he said.

Bairwa said that strict legal action, in accordance with the rules, will be taken against those violating these orders under Section 51 of the Disaster Management Act, 2005, and the relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

The surge was even more noticeable among international travellers, whose arrivals more than doubled during the month, with tourists from Israel emerging as the largest foreign visitor group, the officials said.

They said compared to 3,349 foreign tourists visiting Ladakh in June 2025, the number of such visitors rose to 6,680 in June 2026, registering a jump of 99.46 per cent, demonstrating Ladakh's growing recognition as a globally preferred destination for high-altitude adventure, culture, spirituality and sustainable tourism experiences. 

Among international visitors, Israel continues to emerge as the largest source market for Ladakh, followed by Thailand, the United States, Vietnam, Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Japan, Malaysia, Australia, Taiwan, Russia, Italy, South Korea, Spain and other European and Southeast Asian countries, the officials said.

Apart from the foreign visitors, the overall tourist arrivals in Ladakh in June this year have gone up to 1,07,740, representing a healthy growth of 43.48 per cent over June 2025, when 75,089 tourists had visited the UT.
In the first six months beginning January, a total of 2,25,286 tourists visited Ladakh, including 2,11,645 domestic and 13,641 foreign tourists, the officials said.

They said the latest figures reflect the growing confidence of travellers in Ladakh as one of India's most sought-after year-round tourism destinations and underscore the success of sustained efforts undertaken by the UT administration under the leadership of Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena to strengthen tourism infrastructure and create a more tourist-friendly ecosystem.

Saxena said the encouraging growth in tourist arrivals reflected the success of the administration's sustained efforts to position Ladakh as a premier tourism destination while ensuring sustainable development of the sector.

"Tourism is one of the strongest pillars of Ladakh's economy and a vital source of livelihood for thousands of our people. The remarkable increase in tourist arrivals this year is a reflection of our sustained efforts to position Ladakh as a premier, year-round tourism destination while ensuring that development remains sustainable and environmentally responsible," the LG said.

He said it was heartening to see this growth bringing renewed confidence and economic opportunities for the hoteliers, guesthouse owners, homestay operators, tour operators, transporters, trekking guides, artisans, entrepreneurs and local communities whose livelihoods depend on tourism.

The LG attributed the tourism surge to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's push to domestic tourism and the massive infrastructure boost in Ladakh.
Since assuming office in March, Saxena has consistently accorded high priority to the tourism sector.

Under his leadership, the administration has undertaken several transformative reforms, including simplifying regulatory procedures, reducing compliance burden, granting Industry Status to hotels and guesthouses, improving tourism infrastructure, strengthening air and road connectivity, expanding visitor amenities, and encouraging private investment in tourism-related activities, the officials said.

The administration has also focused on diversifying Ladakh's tourism offerings beyond the conventional summer season by actively promoting winter tourism, adventure tourism, high-altitude trekking, wildlife tourism, rural tourism, wellness tourism, cultural tourism, spiritual tourism and astro-tourism.

Several national and international sporting events, cultural festivals and tourism promotion campaigns have further contributed to extending the tourist season and increasing Ladakh's visibility in domestic and global tourism markets, the officials added.

Hotel occupancy in the hill town is hovering between 40 and 50 per cent on weekends, up by more than 10 per cent compared with the corresponding period last year, tourism industry stakeholders said.

Before the monsoon disasters of 2023 and 2025, hotel occupancy during the first two weeks of July used to be around 70 per cent. However, rain-related calamities in those years had created apprehensions among tourists, affecting footfall, a local hotelier said.

Shimla Hotels and Restaurants Association Vice President Prince Kukreja told PTI that there had been no significant cancellations and the industry was hopeful of a smooth season if there were no major rain-related incidents.

Travel entrepreneur Vijay Kumar said tourists were now visiting Himachal Pradesh in good numbers to experience the monsoon, unlike earlier, when many avoided travelling to the hills during the rainy season.

He said bookings continued to pour in, with several hotels recording 80 to 90 per cent occupancy last week, adding that the season could prove profitable for the tourism industry if favourable weather conditions persisted.

Tourists also expressed satisfaction with the experience.

Badruddin, who visited Shimla with his family from Kanpur, said the weather is pleasant and the scenery is beautiful, whereas another tourist from the same city, Shavina, said the cloud-covered mountains and light showers made the trip truly memorable.

Arvind Singh, a tourist from Ludhiana, said Shimla is the ideal destination to escape the scorching heat of the plains.
Despite intermittent rain and overcast skies, Shimla continues to witness a steady influx of tourists, with stakeholders optimistic about the remainder of the monsoon season.

The 57-day pilgrimage to the 3,880-metre-high Amarnath cave shrine is scheduled to begin on July 3 simultaneously via the traditional 48-km Nunwan-Pahalgam route in the Anantnag district and the shorter but steeper 14-km Baltal route in the Ganderbal district. The yatra will conclude on August 28.

Sinha performed a special puja at the high-security Bhagwati Nagar base camp before flagging off the convoy of pilgrims, officials said.

He was accompanied by Director General of Police Nalin Prabhat, Leader of Opposition Sunil Sharma, BJP MP Jugal Kishore Sharma, local BJP legislators, senior civil and police officials, and representatives of various religious organisations.

Amid chants of "Bam Bam Bhole", "Har Har Mahadev" and "Jai Barfani Baba Ki", over 5000 pilgrims left in a convoy of escorted vehicles for the twin base camps under elaborate security arrangements.

"Har Har Mahadev! The sacred journey to the holy abode of Baba Barfani begins! Flagged off the first batch of pilgrims for Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra 2026 from Jammu''s Bhagwati Nagar Base Camp. Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra is a profound spiritual awakening," Sinha posted on X after the ceremony.

He said every step taken on the sacred route reflected unwavering faith and devotion to Lord Shiva and wished the pilgrims a safe and spiritually fulfilling journey.

Pilgrims expressed satisfaction with the arrangements made by the administration and security agencies.

Suresh Kumar from Surat, undertaking the pilgrimage for the first time, praised the facilities and assistance provided by the administration and the Army.

Baba Goga Nath of Junagarh Akhara described the journey as a blessing and lauded the arrangements made for seers and devotees.

Another seer, Sukham Dass, who arrived with 20 sadhus from Kashi and has been undertaking the pilgrimage for the past 32 years, said facilities for the elderly and specially abled pilgrims have significantly improved.

Vaibhav, a pilgrim from Uttarakhand, said he was happy to be part of the first batch and expressed confidence in the security arrangements.

Rajni Devi from Jaipur, who has been undertaking the pilgrimage for the past nine years, also praised the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board and the administration for the arrangements, saying there was no reason to fear as the security forces were safeguarding the yatra.

Officials said the convoy was escorted under heavy security, while traffic restrictions and area domination measures were enforced along the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway to ensure the safe movement of pilgrims.

Traffic restrictions will remain in force on various stretches of the highway from July 2 to August 28, with daily advisories and sector-wise cut-off timings to regulate traffic, a traffic official said.

More than 3.90 lakh devotees have registered for this year''s pilgrimage, while on-the-spot registration has also commenced in Jammu.

The Jammu region has been placed under an extensive security grid with multi-layered deployment and technology-based surveillance.

BJP MP Jugal Kishore Sharma termed the Amarnath Yatra one of the country's most significant pilgrimages and expressed confidence that it would conclude smoothly.

Leader of Opposition Sunil Sharma also greeted the pilgrims and said the arrangements made by the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board would ensure a comfortable journey.

Domestic travel: Travellers seek different ways to experience the monsoon

While Mumbai, Bengaluru and New Delhi remain among the most searched destinations this monsoon, search trends suggest travellers are looking for a wider range of experiences during the season. From spirituality and outdoor experiences to mountain escapes and cultural exploration, travellers are increasingly choosing destinations that reflect how they want to spend their time away.
 
Among the most notable shifts in this year's rankings was the rise of Rishikesh, which moved from number 18 to number 3 among the most searched domestic destinations, with searches up over 200 per cent year-on-year. Mussoorie also climbed the rankings, rising from number 22 to number 6 and recording over 160 per cent increase in searches.
 
Destinations including Ooty, Kodaikanal and Darjeeling also recorded increases in searches, highlighting continued interest in destinations known for cooler weather and natural surroundings during the monsoon season. At the same time, Jaipur and Udaipur remain among the most searched destinations, reflecting travellers' continued interest in destinations that offer cultural and heritage experiences.

International travel: Familiar favourites meet experience-led exploration

Internationally, Indian travellers continue to balance established favourites such as London, Paris, Dubai and New York with destinations across Asia; five of the top ten most searched international destinations are located within the region. While global cities remain popular, search trends also point to growing interest in destinations that offer distinct cultural, lifestyle and leisure experiences.
 
Japan continues to gain interest from Indian travellers looking for a mix of culture, food, shopping and urban experiences, with Tokyo rising in ranking from number 12 to number 6 among the most searched international destinations.
 
Interestingly, Indonesia is increasingly on travellers’ radar, especially Bali, with Ubud retaining its place among the top 10 most searched destinations and both Seminyak (number 16 to number 13) and Canggu (number 40 to number 18) climbing the rankings year-on-year. The popularity of these destinations reflects how Indian travellers are increasingly seeking different experiences within the same destination. While Ubud is known for its cultural and nature-based experiences, Seminyak and Canggu appeal to travellers looking for dining, leisure, lifestyle and beachside escapes.
 
Top 10 most searched international destinations for all Indian travellers travelling between July 1 and August 31 this year, based on accommodation search data from Booking.com, are London, Singapore, Paris, Bali, New York, Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, Tokyo, Amsterdam, and Berlin.

Santosh Kumar, who is the regional head, South Asia with the platform said, “This monsoon season, Indian travellers are looking beyond traditional seasonal escapes and increasingly choosing destinations that reflect their individual travel interests and aspirations. The growing popularity of destinations such as Rishikesh and Bali reflects a broader shift toward experience-led travel; whether it’s relaxation and wellness, cultural immersion, adventure, or simply taking time to slow down and reconnect.”

For years Seychelles has held a neat spot in the Indian traveller’s mind; honeymoon lists, anniversary escapes, milestone celebrations. It appears on vision boards and luxury roundups with remarkable consistency. Spend a few days here and that tidy image begins to soften.

Seychelles doesn’t insist on a single script. It invites travellers to enjoy its simplicity, adventure and the perfect island life. Like in La Digue that often means getting around by bicycle. With almost no cars, the soundtrack becomes rustling palms, the distant hum of the sea and the occasional bell as someone pedals past. The administration has put in place elaborate security and logistical arrangements to ensure the smooth and hassle-free transit of devotees to their respective destinations.

Relief and Rehabilitation Commissioner Arvind Karwani said that multiple agencies, including the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF), Jammu and Kashmir Police, and the Army, were working in coordination to ensure the safety of pilgrims throughout the journey.

"We tried to make security arrangements better than the previous year. The Yatra is leaving today, and until the pilgrims reach their destinations safely, everyone, including the CAPF, the J&K Police, and the Army, is working together to ensure this is a great arrangement, deploying every standard gadget and all the required forces," Karwani told ANI.

Meanwhile, BJP MLA Devyani Rana flagged off devotees from the old toll post in Nagrota, located at the foothills of the Kol Kandoli Mata Temple, and extended her best wishes to the pilgrims.

"We are sending people off for darshan from the Old toll post in Nagrota, which is at the foot of the Kol Kandoli Mata Temple. I hope that all the devotees leaving from here have a successful and pleasant journey," Rana told ANI.

She further highlighted the arrangements made for devotees through a community service initiative.

"It is fortunate that today, through the 'Jeeyo Geeta Sansthanam', with the blessings of our revered Gyan Ji Maharaj, a grand langar is being organised here. Through this, food and drink arrangements have been made for all the devotees leaving today. I hope that our devotees will begin their journey this morning with an open mind and open heart," she said.

The Mata Kheer Bhawani annual mela takes place at the famous Ragnya Devi temple in the village Tulmulla, 25 kilometres off Srinagar.

'Kheer', a milk and rice pudding, is offered to propitiate the goddess. Kheer Bhawani is sometimes translated as 'Milk Goddess'. The worship of Kheer Bhawani is universal among the Hindus of Kashmir; most of them worship her as their protective patron deity, Kuladevi. 

Data released by the state Tourism Department on Friday showed that Goa received 46,39,165 visitors during the first five months of 2026, an increase of 0.39 per cent compared to the same period last year.

Of the total arrivals, domestic tourists accounted for 44,37,018 visitors, while foreign tourist arrivals stood at 2,02,147.

The month of May alone saw 9,69,090 tourists arriving in the coastal state, marking a 4.53 per cent increase over May 2025, the department said.

Tourism Minister Rohan Khaunte said the growth in visitor arrivals was being driven by strong connectivity, diversified tourism experiences and increasing confidence among travellers.

"While our beaches remain iconic, travellers are increasingly exploring Goa's culture, heritage, spirituality, wellness offerings, hinterland experiences, festivals and culinary traditions," he said.

Khaunte said this broad-based growth was helping the state build a more resilient tourism economy while ensuring that the benefits of tourism reach communities across Goa.

The department said domestic tourism continues to remain a major driver of overall arrivals, while international travel is being strengthened through enhanced air connectivity, charter operations and cruise tourism.

It noted that Goa's dual-airport infrastructure -- Dabolim Airport and Manohar International Airport at Mopa -- has expanded the state's accessibility and widened its reach across domestic and international markets.

Tourism Director Kedar Naik said the steady growth recorded during the first five months of 2026 demonstrated the strength and adaptability of Goa's tourism sector.

"Through focused destination development, improved connectivity and the promotion of varied tourism experiences, Goa is attracting visitors throughout the year and encouraging them to explore different facets of the destination," he said.

Naik said the department's focus remains on enhancing visitor experiences while advancing responsible and sustainable tourism growth.

Speaking to ANI, tourist Gautam from Amritsar, Punjab, said, "It feels wonderful to be here. The weather is excellent, and we are enjoying a lot. The people here are also very good and cooperative. Himachal Pradesh is one of the best tourist destinations. We are enjoying our time in Kufri and Shimla.

We are climbing the hills, exploring the area, and riding horses. Back home, temperatures are around 40 to 42 degrees Celsius, while here it feels close to 18 degrees. I would encourage everyone to visit this beautiful place."

Another tourist, Vineet Chaudhary from Noida, Uttar Pradesh, told ANI, "We are having a great time here. We went to higher altitudes and enjoyed the experience immensely.

The temperature is very pleasant and drops to around 12 degrees Celsius at night. Initially, horse riding felt a little scary, but it turned out to be a memorable experience. We came here during our children's vacation and would recommend others to spend their holidays in Himachal as well."

Mihika, a tourist from Moradabad, Uttar Pradesh, who is spending her vacation in Kufri, said, "I am enjoying my visit here. Horse riding was a wonderful experience, and the climate is excellent. The weather here is much better than in Moradabad. I would definitely recommend my friends to come and experience this beautiful destination." She said.

Sumit Singh, a tourist from Chandigarh, also expressed his excitement while speaking to ANI. "It feels amazing to be here. The weather is much cooler compared to the intense heat in the plains. I visited Kufri for the first time and thoroughly enjoyed the mountains and various recreational activities available here," he said.

The surge in tourist arrivals has brought cheer to people associated with the tourism industry, who report strong business activity during both weekdays and weekends.

Speaking to ANI, travel operator Virender Rawat said, "A large number of tourists are visiting Kufri due to the extreme heat in the plains and the pleasant weather conditions here. We offer various adventure activities, and tourists can enjoy horse rides to Mahasu Peak, from where they get a spectacular 360-degree view of the surrounding mountains. Visitors also enjoy apple orchards and other adventure attractions. Tourism-related businesses are performing very well this season," he said.

According to local stakeholders, around 1,000 to 1,200 people are directly associated with tourism-related activities in the Kufri area, including adventure sports, horse riding, photography, hotels, and other services.

They say that business this year has been better than in previous years, with increased tourist footfall and improved cooperation among stakeholders contributing to a successful season.

So far, the majority of tourists visiting the state are from north India, while tourists from Gujarat and Maharashtra have not shown up in large numbers, according to him.

"The tourist rush is there, but quality tourists with spending capacity are not coming to Himachal," Ranjit, a salesman from a Shimla Mall Road shop, said.

A large number of vehicles are coming, and there is a huge crowd on the Mall Road, but the sales have not gone up, he added.

Pankaj Sharma, Director of Archaeology and Museums under the state government’s Youth Services and Cultural Activities Department, said museums in the state have undergone a significant transformation in recent years.

“With the integration of digital technology, museums are no longer merely repositories of artefacts but have become vibrant centres of knowledge and culture,” he said.

Gujarat has established five new museums over the past decade, including the Smritivan Earthquake Memorial and Museum in Bhuj, Dandi Kutir in Gandhinagar, and the Vadnagar Archaeological Museum, as part of efforts to preserve the state’s heritage while making it accessible to contemporary audiences.

Sharma said the character of museums has changed in line with evolving public expectations.

Facilities that were once primarily associated with the display of historical artefacts now serve as interactive learning spaces that combine history, culture, and technology.

Museums across the state are increasingly using augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), 3D projection mapping, holograms, and interactive touchscreens to allow visitors to engage directly with Gujarat’s heritage.

Referring to the broader heritage conservation efforts undertaken in recent years, he said: "Gujarat had sought to balance economic growth with the preservation of its historical and cultural legacy."

Officials noted that, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the past 12 years, the vision of “Vikas Bhi, Virasat Bhi” had been advanced through initiatives that protect heritage while promoting development.

"Under Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and with the guidance of Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi, efforts had been made to introduce younger generations to the state’s ancient legacy while safeguarding historical sites and traditions," officials added.

Among the state’s flagship museum projects is the Smritivan Earthquake Memorial and Museum in Bhuj, built in memory of those who lost their lives in the devastating 2001 Gujarat earthquake.

The museum, located on Bhujiyo Hill, incorporates advanced technology, including a simulator that allows visitors to experience earthquake conditions.

Officials said the museum presents not only the tragedy of the disaster but also the story of Gujarat’s recovery and reconstruction.

Visitors to the museum have described it as a powerful representation of the resilience shown by the people of Kutch and Gujarat in the aftermath of the earthquake.

Through theatres, digital installations, and immersive exhibits, the museum recreates the circumstances of the disaster and documents the rebuilding efforts that followed.

Dandi Kutir, inaugurated in 2015 in Gandhinagar, uses multimedia technology to present the life and philosophy of Mahatma Gandhi.

The museum is housed within a 41-metre-high conical structure designed to resemble a mound of salt, symbolising the Salt Satyagraha launched by Gandhi in 1930.

Through a combination of light, sound, animation, and multimedia presentations, visitors are guided through key events in Gandhi’s life and India’s freedom movement.

Officials said Dandi Kutir showcased how museums can move beyond traditional exhibitions to become spaces that inspire learning and reflection through technology-driven storytelling.

The Vadnagar Archaeological Museum, opened in 2025, has been designed to preserve and present the ancient history of Vadnagar and the discoveries made during archaeological excavations in the area.

The museum is described as the first of its kind in India to offer visitors an excavation-site experience alongside displays of artefacts recovered from excavations.

The facility incorporates AR and VR applications, 3D displays, replicas, and dioramas to help visitors understand the chronological development of seven cultural phases spanning approximately 2,500 years.

Officials said the museum offers a detailed insight into the evolution of one of Gujarat’s historically significant settlements.

The state is also developing the National Maritime Heritage Complex at Lothal, a major project dedicated to India’s maritime history and the legacy of the Indus Valley Civilisation.

The complex, currently under construction, is expected to become the world’s largest maritime museum.

Located at one of the most significant port cities of the ancient Indus Valley Civilisation, the project aims to showcase India’s historical role in global trade and navigation.

Through immersive galleries, virtual presentations, maritime trade models, and interactive exhibits, visitors can explore ancient shipping routes, commercial networks, and seafaring traditions.

Officials said the complex is intended to serve not only as a museum but also as a cultural centre highlighting India’s maritime heritage on an international scale.

Another major attraction is the museum at the Statue of Unity in Kevadia, which documents the life of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and the integration of India’s princely states following Independence.

The museum combines historical exhibits with modern presentation techniques and forms an integral part of the wider monument complex.

Himachal Pradesh Governor Kavinder Gupta formally inaugurated the festival and called upon visitors to follow administrative guidelines to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience in the hill station.

Addressing the gathering during the first cultural evening, Governor Kavinder Gupta described the Summer Festival as an important platform for showcasing Himachal Pradesh's rich culture, traditions, and heritage. He congratulated the elected representatives, Shimla Municipal Corporation, and the district administration for successfully organizing the event.

The Governor said,"Shimla remains one of India's most prominent tourist destinations and that the festival provides visitors from across the country with an opportunity to experience the state's cultural richness. He stressed the need to preserve and promote folk traditions and ensure that younger generations remain connected to their cultural roots."

Welcoming artists from different parts of the country, Gupta said such events encourage cultural exchange and strengthen social harmony by allowing people to understand and appreciate diverse traditions.

"Shimla's pleasant weather and natural beauty continue to attract visitors, its geographical limitations and finite resources require responsible tourism... I urge the tourists to adhere to rules and guidelines laid down by the administration and wish them a safe and memorable stay in the state capital," he said.

The inaugural cultural evening witnessed vibrant performances by artists from various regions, who showcased Himachal Pradesh's rich folk heritage through music and dance, leaving the audience enthralled.

The district administration has made extensive arrangements to ensure the smooth conduct of the festival, which will continue till June 12.

Speaking to ANI, Pankaj Sharma, Additional District Magistrate, Shimla, said, "Cultural performances by Himachali, Punjabi, and artists from other states will continue throughout the festival. He said special efforts have been made to promote Himachal Pradesh's folk traditions through cultural presentations and folk dance performances."

Apart from cultural events, a food festival, volleyball competition, Zumba sessions, Mallakhamb demonstrations, and several other activities have been organized to attract tourists. Sharma said the festival also contributes significantly to the local economy by boosting tourism and generating employment opportunities.

He added that the city has been divided into sectors, and executive magistrates and police personnel have been deployed in coordination to ensure the smooth conduct of the five-day event. He appealed to visitors to enjoy Shimla's natural beauty responsibly and cooperate with authorities.

To maintain law and order, the police department has deployed around 300 personnel across key locations, including the Ridge and Mall Road.

Speaking to ANI, Abhishek, Additional Superintendent of Police, Shimla, said, "Summer Festival management has been divided into three sectors, each under the supervision of senior officers. He said the primary focus is on ensuring the safety and convenience of tourists while preventing any law-and-order issues."

The officer said police personnel have also been deployed to guide visitors and manage traffic effectively. Additional traffic arrangements, route diversions, and sector-wise monitoring have been implemented to ensure smooth movement during the festival.

Abhishek appealed to young visitors to celebrate responsibly, avoid unruly behaviour or alcohol-related disturbances, and cooperate with police personnel. He also urged local residents to warmly welcome tourists visiting the city.

Tourists attending the festival expressed excitement over the lively atmosphere, pleasant weather, and cultural attractions.

Alok Gupta, a tourist from Uttar Pradesh, said, " I am delighted to witness the Summer Festival during his visit to Shimla. He described the experience as memorable, praising the vibrant crowd, festive spirit, and cool weather, which offered relief from the intense heat in the plains."

Gupta said the atmosphere was so enjoyable that it would encourage him to visit Shimla again and participate in future editions of the festival.

Similarly, Himanshi, a tourist from Delhi, said, "The pleasant weather, festive celebrations, and enthusiastic crowds had made her visit particularly enjoyable." She encouraged more people to visit Shimla during the festival period, noting that tourists could experience local cuisine, culture, and entertainment all at one place.

Mammoth Mountain

One of California’s most popular and iconic volcanoes, Mammoth Mountain’s gondola-accessed promontory sits at an elevation of 11,000 feet above the town of Mammoth Lakes and provides visitors with unparalleled views and outdoor recreation throughout the year. This geologically young mountain was formed by a series of violent eruptions that occurred roughly 110,000 to 55,000 years ago as proof of the geologic unrest in the Eastern Sierra. Each of the many individual eruptions left layers of volcanic rock called rhyolite and dacite, with distinctly coloured intervals of rock representing separate tectonic events. While the volcano itself is no longer considered active today, the mountain is still alive with evidence of an explosive past. Fumaroles discharge steam and volcanic gases from the flanks of Mammoth Mountain and on the southwest side in the Mammoth Lakes Basin, as well as releases of carbon dioxide, have killed the forests around Horseshoe Lake.

The area is a hotspot for adventurous experiences, starting from riding the scenic gondola to the summit of Mammoth Mountain. Once you have reached the top, explore the Eleven53 Interpretive Center where you can chat with US Forest Service scientists to learn more about the geology of the area while enjoying an unforgettable view from the summit. Summers call for thrilling mountain biking as well as hiking to the Mammoth Lakes Basin, while skiing takes over during winter. Make sure to take breaks in between adventures at the on-site restaurants.

Obsidian Dome

Obsidian Dome is one of the most unique geological features of the Eastern Sierra. From looking at preserved remnants of trees, geologists have determined that this young volcanic feature formed around 700 years ago, or at the beginning of the Renaissance Period, when steam-driven volcanic explosions created a conduit for silica-rich magma to reach the surface. Once this rapidly cooled, the otherworldly Obsidian Dome was formed and developed into a rare volcanic landscape over the years. What makes Obsidian Dome so unique is its composition of almost exclusively obsidian, which means the mountain is comprised entirely of volcanic glass! Because of this, the volcano was very important to indigenous peoples, who collected and traded the obsidian for use in tools, weaponry, and jewellery. Today, Obsidian Dome stands almost 400 feet above the surrounding forest floor and is barren of vegetation, making this moon-like landscape a great place for every member of the family to explore.

From exploring to climbing, hiking to discovering, the Obsidian Dome offers many outdoor adventures for both children and adults. Trails leading to the nearby Owens River Headwater Wilderness offer a charming experience in nature. Mono Lake

Witness something magical with Mono Lake’s volcanic activity in action and its interesting geologic history that began over one million years ago. This volcanically active ancient lake has had its most recent series of eruptions occurring within the past 350 years. These eruptions partially formed the massive Paoha Island in the centre of Mono Lake's hypersaline waters, and today, the island remains one of western North America's most crucial migrating bird habitats.

Long Valley Caldera

The mountain town of Mammoth Lakes is a geological paradise, set within the scenic Sierra Nevada Mountains and is surrounded by an incredibly diverse collection of volcanoes found along the rim of the ancient Long Valley Caldera. When this super volcano erupted 750,000 years ago, it greatly altered the surrounding landscape and sent volcanic ash as far away as Kansas. Since then, smaller volcanic events have created many of the landforms we know today, including the pumice-covered slopes of Mono Craters.

As World Environment Day observed on June 5 every year, under the theme “Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future” in 2026, Booking.com has released new data about Indian travellers.

According to the travel platform’s Travel and Sustainability Report 2026, Indian travellers are becoming more conscious of their impact on destinations, communities and the environment, with many actively trying to travel more responsibly. The research highlights how sustainability is steadily becoming part of everyday travel planning, influencing everything from destination choices to booking habits.

Nearly three-quarters (74 per cent) of Indian travellers believe people need to act now and make more sustainable choices to preserve the planet for future generations. At the same time, 72 per cent say they are more determined to travel more sustainably now than they were a year ago, reflecting rising awareness around the long-term impact of tourism.

Travel is also becoming more purposeful for many Indian travellers. More than half (58 per cent) say they want to leave the places they visit better than when they arrived, while 71 per cent say seeing sustainable practices while travelling inspires them to adopt similar habits in their everyday lives. This suggests sustainability is beginning to influence not only how people travel, but also how they live.

Sustainable travel is increasingly influencing how Indians plan their trips

Making intentions action: Nearly half (47 per cent) of Indian travellers say they try to make more sustainable travel choices whenever possible, while 35 per cent say sustainability consistently influences the decisions they make while travelling. Together, this reflects how responsible travel is becoming a more established part of mainstream traveller behaviour.

Evolving destination preferences: Rather than focusing only on traditional tourist hotspots, many Indian travellers are increasingly looking for places that feel less crowded. Nearly half (49 per cent) say they want to experience destinations before they become too popular, while 45 per cent say visiting lesser-known destinations helps reduce their environmental impact. The growing interest in quieter destinations also points to rising awareness around overcrowding and its impact on local communities and experiences.

Choosing when to travel: Indian travellers are becoming more open to travelling outside peak periods, driven by a mix of practical and sustainability-related motivations. Among those opting for off-season travel, 71 per cent say they want to avoid crowds, while 55 per cent want to help reduce pressure on destinations. Better availability for accommodations and attractions (68 per cent), along with saving money on trips (51 per cent), are also encouraging travellers to explore off-season travel. 

Travellers want sustainable travel to be easier, clearer and more rewarding

As sustainability becomes a bigger priority, Indian travellers are also expecting the booking experience to become more transparent and easier to navigate:

Seeking consistency: Nearly two-thirds (65 per cent) believe travel websites and apps should use consistent sustainability certifications or labels, highlighting growing demand for clearer and more reliable information while planning trips.

Filtering future bookings: This mindset is also shaping future booking behaviour. Around 73 per cent plan to actively filter for more sustainable tours, attractions and activities, while 70 per cent intend to look for accommodations with sustainability certifications. Another 68 per cent say they are likely to filter for electric or hybrid rental vehicle options, signalling stronger intent to actively seek out lower-impact travel alternatives.

The importance of affordability: At the same time, travellers want sustainable options to feel practical and accessible rather than expensive or difficult to navigate. Nearly half (47 per cent) say discounts or financial incentives would encourage them to travel more sustainably, while 45 per cent want advice on how to make sustainable choices while travelling on a budget. This reinforces the importance of affordability in helping more travellers adopt sustainable habits.

Looking for guidance and support: Indian travellers are also looking for more support to make informed decisions while planning trips. Around 41 per cent want clearer communication around what makes an option more sustainable, while 40 per cent say guidance on the best times to travel to avoid overcrowding would encourage more responsible travel choices. Loyalty rewards and recommendations for alternative destinations were both cited by 38 per cent of respondents, pointing to growing interest in smarter and more conscious ways to explore destinations.

Commenting on the research, Santosh Kumar, regional lead, South Asia at the travel platform says, said, “As traveller expectations continue to evolve, sustainability is becoming more closely linked with the overall quality and experience of travel. Indian travellers today are looking for choices that feel more thoughtful and informed, whether that means exploring destinations outside peak periods, choosing certified stays or seeking clearer information while planning trips”

According to digital travel platform Agoda, accommodation searches for mountain destinations such as Leh, Kasol and McLeod Ganj have risen significantly compared to last year, driven largely by travelers from metro cities.

Leh, set in the Trans-Himalayan region of Ladakh, witnessed a 143 per cent increase in searches. Home to high-altitude trekking routes including Markha Valley and Lasermo La among others, Leh appeals to adventure seekers looking for challenging terrain and unique landscapes. Searches from New Delhi and Mumbai-based travelers saw growth of 140 per cent and 158 per cent respectively compared to last year, and searches from Hyderabad increased by 106 per cent. 
 
Kasol follows closely, seeing a 126 per cent increase in searches from India compared to the previous year. The picturesque hotspot is known for its access to trails like Kheerganga and Tosh Valley, as well as its scenic Parvati Valley location. Key cities with an increase in travel interest include New Delhi, with accommodation searches increasing by 129 per cent year-on-year, as well as Chandigarh, which saw a 178 per cent increase in searches. 

Additionally, travelers are also showing increasing interest in McLeod Ganj and the surrounding areas, which offer trekking-focused experiences along scenic routes in the Dhauladhar range like Triund, Kareri Lake, and Indrahar Pass.

This shift reflects a broader evolution in how travelers are approaching trip planning, with outdoor accessibility becoming a primary consideration rather than an afterthought. The rise of destinations with accessibility to popular trekking trails indicates that travelers are moving beyond traditional itineraries and seeking destinations that offer immediate access to nature-based activities.
