Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde reviews monsoon preparedness, orders for extra pumps at waterlogging spots

Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde conducted inspections at several flood-prone locations in parts of the city as part of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's (BMC) monsoon preparedness review.

Tawade visited the Andheri Subway, Milan Subway, Gandhi Market pumping station and Hindmata pumping station to assess the readiness of civic infrastructure ahead of the monsoon season.

Several elected representatives and civic officials accompanied her during the inspection tour.

During the visit to the Andheri Subway, local MLA Murji Patel highlighted the recurring issue of waterlogging in the low-lying area during heavy rainfall.

He said the flooding problem has persisted for years and stressed the need for a permanent solution. Patel added that the issue has been repeatedly raised during legislative sessions.

Civic officials informed the delegation that various proposals are under consideration to permanently address flooding at the subway and that feasible solutions could be implemented in the near future.

Joint meeting to be convened

Ritu Tawde said a joint meeting would soon be held at the mayor's office to discuss long-term measures to tackle waterlogging at the Andheri Subway.

She also directed officials to install additional pumping equipment at the location during the current monsoon season to ensure faster drainage of rainwater during heavy downpours.

The mayor also inspected the Milan Subway, Gandhi Market and Hindmata pumping stations, along with the rainwater storage tank project at these locations.

She reviewed the operational readiness of the facilities and instructed officials to ensure that all systems remain fully functional throughout the monsoon period.

The civic chief emphasised the importance of uninterrupted functioning of pumping infrastructure to minimise flooding in vulnerable areas.

Interaction with locals

During the inspections, the mayor interacted with local residents and heard their concerns regarding flooding, drainage and civic infrastructure.

She assured citizens that their suggestions and issues would be taken into consideration while implementing monsoon management measures.

The inspection tour concluded with a visit to the skate park located beneath the Hindmata flyover.

Tawde reviewed the ongoing cleaning, repair and repainting work at the facility and directed officials to complete the restoration at the earliest.

She said the park should be reopened to athletes and local users as soon as possible after the improvement works are completed.
