Speedsters hoping to zoom across the Bandra Worli Sea Link (BWSL) into 2011 while under the influence of alcohol might just be making their last mistake of 2010.

Measures are being taken by the Mumbai traffic police to enforce a few strict rules on BWSL.

Mumbai traffic police to enforce a few strict rules on the Bandra Worli Sea Link on New Year's eve

DCP Traffic, Nandkumar Chaugule, said, "A vast majority of accidents that took place on the sea link were due to speeding.

On New Year's Eve, many youngsters will be taking this route. We have decided to increase the number of constables patrolling BWSL to ensure rules are not broken.

These constables will keep a strict vigil and motorist caught speeding will be fined."

Chaugule also added that as an additional measure, zigzag fluorescent barricades would also be placed at various points on BWSL to deter motorists from speeding.

Mobile traffic police units along with Maharashtra State Development Corporation (MSRDC) will be patrolling the entire length of the BWSL to ensure that motorists do not halt anywhere on the BWSL, since this could cause accidents.

Mumbai traffic police along with MSRDC and Mumbai Entry Point Limited (MEPL) will also be monitoring traffic on the sea link via CCTV.

"We are expecting a large turnout of youngsters in four-wheelers since it is New Year's Eve and we don't want any accident to happen on BWSL.

Therefore we are planning to conduct breathalyzer tests at all entry points at Bandra Reclamation and Worli.

We intend to fine law-breakers and we will not permit any person under the influence of alcohol to drive on the sea link," said a traffic cop.

In addition to these test points, traffic police will be conducting breathalyzer tests at another 60 points in Mumbai and motorists found to be above the allowed limit will be dealt with accordingly.
