Days after Ashish Goyal bagged the highest national honour for individuals with disabilities, sister Garima is nominated for award celebrating spirit of the handicapped

The Goyal family has several reasons to celebrate.

After their son Ashish Goyal won this year's national award for the empowerment of persons with disabilities on December 4, his sister Garima has been nominated for an award called Cavinkare Ability Awards started by an NGO called Ability Foundation in Chennai.

The Cavinkare Ability Awards was born nine years ago and celebrates and recognises the achievements of people with disabilities who make a difference in their own lives and in the lives of others.

Garima, who was diagnosed with Retinitis Pigmentosa a disease in which the retina slowly degenerates in Class 10 has been nominated for the award, the ceremony for which will be conducted in February, 2011.

After being diagnosed with the illness, Garima dropped her lifelong dream of becoming a painter and applied for the commerce stream in college. "Till Class 12, I used to write my exams on my own.

However, later, I found it difficult to write my papers and opted for a writer from second year of degree college," said Garima.

Garima then decided to do her masters in commerce along with a part-time diploma course in human resource management. She also completed her social communications media u00a0course from Sophia Polytechnic.

"My college conferred a special award on me for coming first in the exams," she added.

Garima is now editing and translating a book written by Ayurvedic doctor Balaji Tambe and is working in Atmasantulana Village in Karla at Lonavala. "I enjoy working with Balaji Tambe.

He is my guru and constant inspiration. I also admire my brother, Ashish, who is five years elder to me. I take his guidance whenever I need to and discuss things with him," u00a0she said.
