Czech police said yesterday they had questioned and charged 12 current or former footballers suspected of matchfixing in several competitions.

“Twelve people have been arrested... in relation to suspected corruption in football, possible match fixing in different competitions and related punting activities,” anti-corruption squad spokesman Jaroslav Ibehej said in a statement.

Twenty others have been summoned for questioning and the police have also carried out 15 house searches, he added. “Those arrested were subsequently charged with corruption crimes (bribery and accepting a bribe),” said Ibehej.

The Czech police are co-operating with their Slovak counterparts on the case. Czech media have said top-flight sides FK Teplice and FK Jablonec were involved in the affair.
