In another incident that justifies pedestrian rage against rash drivers of luxury cars, a 16-year-old crushed a 45-year-old woman in Malad under his speeding Skoda early Sunday morning.

Arrested the minor
Monster machine: Within an hour, police officers traced the vehicle’s owner and arrested the minor from his house.

The Skoda pushed the victim, a sweeper, towards a tree and pinned her against it, squeezing the life out of her. Splinters from her bones, which were crushed inside her body, pierced her vital organs, killing her instantly, police said.

The accused is the nephew of a Goregaon club’s trustee and son of a businessman who deals in jewellery, Bangur Nagar police officials said. Around 6 am, he was on his way back home from a friend’s birthday party at Madh Island in his car (MH 02 BG 6462), when the accident took place. He had dropped off a friend on the way and was alone.

The mishap occurred on the road opposite Gudiya Pada on Link Road. The sweeper, Anita Suresh Chauhan, a mother of four children and a resident of the area, was running her routine errand to the civic garbage bin to dispose of the trash she had collected from the neighbourhood in Malad (W).

Eyewitnesses say
Eyewitnesses told police that as Chauhan was crossing the road, the Skoda came racing towards her, hauled her to the side of the road, pinning her against a tree.

“The woman was killed instantly while the youth tried to escape. In an attempt to flee, he took a sharp turn and crashed into a parked i10 some distance away.

One of the occupants of the i10, the wife of a doctor, received injuries on her head as it hit the dashboard. The Skoda then came to a halt,” said Raghunath Bagul, senior police inspector of Bangur Nagar police station.

Police officers said the doctor, who was also in the i10, had memorised the Skoda’s number and gave it to the police when they reached the spot. By then, the minor had fled the spot.

“He was driving at more than 90 km per hour and lost control of the vehicle,” said a shop owner near the spot.

Mob spits fire
Minutes later, a mob gathered and began a protest, demanding the arrest of the driver. Within an hour, police officers traced the vehicle’s owner, arrested the minor from his house near Orlem Church, and presented him before the angry locals to stop them from staging a ‘rasta roko’.

“We had to present the boy in front of the crowd to prevent any law and order disruption,” said a police officer.

The police booked the juvenile driver for causing ‘death due to negligence’ and for driving without a licence. He will be presented before the court on Monday.

“I did not see the woman crossing the road and could not control the vehicle,” said the boy to the police.

Officers are now awaiting his medical reports to check whether he was drunk while driving.u00a0
