In a bid to impress his superiors so an assistant police inspector from Kandivli police station allegedly filed a fake bike theft case against a 22-year-old.

Anees Khanu00a0alleges that Arun Hazare detained Karim for two days
without even having a proper case against him

According to the victim, Mohammad Karim, he was detained by the Kandivli police for two days by Assistant Police Inspector Arun Hazare without any proper case and later charged under Section 124 of the Indian Penal Code.

According to Karim's friend Anees Khan, the entire incident unfolded on December 13, when Karim had borrowed Khan's bike for a ride. While Karim was passing through Kandivli, API Arun Hazare of the Kandivli police station apprehended him during a nakabandi.

"When Karim was asked whose bike it was, he told Hazare that the bike belonged to me. However, Hazare did not believe him and asked me to come to the police station to produce the bike's papers," said Anees.

Anees added that when he reached the station, Hazare forced him into filing a complaint against Karim stating that he had robbed his bike. "However, I refused to file a complaint as Karim is my friend and I had given the bike to him willingly," said Anees.

Anees further alleges that Hazare forced him to file a complaint so that he could boast to his superiors that he had nabbed a bike thief red-handed.

Won't back down
However, the situation took a turn for the worse, as Hazare refused to back down and insisted that a complaint be filed. "He so badly wanted to file a complaint against Karim that the next day he sent two constables to my place to file a theft complaint with the Malwani police station, as I am a resident there," said Anees.

Anees went to Malwani police station and narrated the entire incident to Senior Inspector Sanjay Pawar. After hearing the details, Pawar refused to register a complaint against Karim.

"We enquired with Anees, and he told us that he had willingly given the bike to his friend. We knew that there is no case, so we did not register an FIR," said Pawar.

Agitated, Hazare arrested Karim under Section 124 of the IPC and presented before court. Hazare said, "We arrested Karim as we had apprehended the bike and he did not have the key. We arrested him as a suspect."

Meanwhile, when MiD DAY approached Deputy Commissioner of police (Zone XII) Dr Mahesh Patil on the matter, he said, "I will conduct an enquiry into the matter myself."
