A businessman who had faked his own kidnapping and fled to Goa and then to Thiruvananthapuram was finally caught at the domestic airport in Mumbai yesterday. According to investigating officials, the man had fled with a girl he was having an affair with in order to get away from his family woes.

Vikesh Jain, a 25-year-old resident of Manik Apartments situated at Dadar, had gone missing on September 19 with Rs 3 lakh cash. Vikesh's father Mangilal initially received a call from a girl informing him that his son had been kidnapped and would be returned to them in a month's time.

However, Mangilal did not take the call seriously and tried calling his son. But to his shock, his son's phone was unreachable and that's when Mangilal rushed to the police to file a case of kidnapping.

Jayendra Sawant, assistant Police Inspector, Dadar police station, said, "Mangilal filed a complaint with the police on September 20 about the kidnapping of his son by an unknown person."

The cops zeroed down on the girl who had called Mangilal.

"When we started tracing the calls, we were first directed to Goa. When we reached there, the person had managed to flee to Thiruvananthapuram and when we managed to reach Thiruvananthapuram, they had escaped once again. Finally, after an unsuccessful chase, we caught hold of Vikesh outside the domestic airport in Mumbai," said Shashikant Mane, police inspector of crime branch, Unit V.

The cops said that Vikesh later confessed that he had hatched the entire plan of eloping with his girlfriend, who was a minor, as he was fed up of the situation with his family.

"We are investigating the matter and see what has to be done next," said Himanshu Roy, joint commissioner of police (Crime).
