Air Intelligence Unit of Customs Department made big cases of gold smuggling since Friday night. Three cases were made by them.


In the first case seizure of yellow and silver coloured chains purported to be gold totally weighing 2465 gram valued at Rs.64,18,577 was made. The domestic passenger Mohamed Akram who arrived from Goa by flight AI-330 on August 8. Gold was handed over to him by Mohammed Tanweez Sheikh who arrived by flight No.9W-537 from Dubai. Mohammed Tanweez Shaikh was also apprehended. Both the passengers were arrested by the AIU.


In the second and a unique case the AIU based on a specific information received a domestic passenger Fayas Hussain Shaikh. Shaikh was intercepted at domestic airport on his arrival by flight No. AI-569 on Saturday which resulted in the recovery of two garlands containing 22 cello tapes wrapped packets containing 32 gold cut pieces and 8 gold bars totally weighing 10.795 kilogram of gold. The yellow metal was totally valued at Rs.2,26,54,469. The gold was handed over by a international passenger coming from Muskat in Chennai. In yet another case one gold bar of a kilogram and four gold bars of 10 tolas were seized. The metal totally weighed 1464 gram that is valued at Rs. 38,12,087. It was recovered from Abid Mohammed Kashif who arrived from Dubai by spice jet SG 014 on Saturday.


Huge jump is witnessed in seized gold till July 2014 compared to corresponding period of last year. In last financial year from April 2013 to July 13 the gold seized was 61.46 kilogram in 79 cases where as the current year the gold seized is 403.52 kilogram in 497 cases.

"This was the first ever case in last two decades that was made in domestic airport. The AIU was alerted by DRI after which the passenger was caught," said an AIU official.
