One sustains severe brain injury, as robbers decamp with Rs 8 lakh worth of gold from their Kalyan home
The elderly are becoming increasingly vulnerable to crime, as a violent robbery that occurred last Monday proves.
Three armed men robbed the Kalyan residence of Deobai Pandit, who is a 100-years-old, and slashed and thrashed her with knives and an iron rod.
The robbers attacked 100-year-old Deobai Pandit with an iron rod, and also assaulted her sister-in-law, Sarubai Kamatkar (80), who was present in the house
The robbers also attacked Pandit's sister-in-law, Sarubai Kamatkar (80), who was in the house, before they made off with gold worth Rs 7-8 lakh.
Pandit's daughter, Gajrabai Ghatal, who she lives with, was not in the house at 2 pm, when the men barged into the house.
They locked the doors from the inside and embarked on a brutal assault on the elderly women, inflicting them with multiple knife wounds, and pounding their heads with an iron rod. They gagged both the women to muffle their screams.
Having mangled them, the robbers proceeded to break into the safe and rob the victims of gold worth Rs 7-8 lakh.
When Gajrabai returned home around five in the evening, she found the two women in the buff, lying unconscious in a pool of blood.
The victims were rushed to Thane Civil Hospital where they were allegedly met with indifference and hostility.

"They claimed to have no machinery or equipment and turned us away, saying that we should admit them at Sion Hospital."
Pandit has sustained a depressed skull fracture from the hard blows, resulting in a brain injury.
Dr Dharmendra Pander, neurosurgeon, said, "Because of her advanced age, we cannot risk performing any surgery. There may be complications during or after the operation, which she may not be able to endure."
As of now, Deobai lies unresponsive and disoriented in her bed at Sion Hospital, as her relatives hope for the best. Sarubai, in spite of the skull fractures and numerous injuries, is doing relatively better than her sister-in-law.
PSI Deshmukh of the Kalyan Bazaar Peth police station said, "We have registered an FIR but haven't caught the perpetrators. The investigation is underway."
