MHADA residents say privacy eludes them as sounds travel very easily from one home to another
Houses constructed by the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) are no longer considered sub-standard ramshackle structures that were only bought because their rates were lower than anything else on offer in the market. Those who bought over 88,000 application forms for MHADA houses yesterday clearly knew this, and residents of Prateeksha Nagar, Sion, who moved into homes built by MHADA in 2006, say as much.
The only downside, residents say, is that flat-owners can clearly hear neighbours speaking in their homes, and assorted sounds like that of the TV, radio and even running taps. You may have to say goodbye to some of your privacy, if you move into a MHADA flat.
"We can clearly hear the dialogues on TV in the neighbours' homes, and the floor shakes every time a heavy vehicle drives on the road.
However, this is a small price to pay for owning a house, and the quality of construction, including lifts and corridors, can be compared with that of any other building in our area," said Sarika Redij, a housewife from Prateeksha Nagar, Sion, who has been living in a 330-square feet tenement at Prateeksha Nagar since 2006.
Satish Dhupelia, a structural engineer, confirmed that the quality of MHADA's construction has improved substantially over the years. "MHADA flats may not have imported marble flooring and swanky interiors, but the construction is good. However, the alignment of MHADA houses is such that windows of neighbouring flats are so close that it can get really noisy," Dhupelia said.
