Undeterred by age, Kirit Makwana secures 41 per cent in Std XII exams

While teens all over the city celebrate their HSC results, there is one student who stands out among the rest not because of his grades, but because there is something different about him.

At the age of 53, Kirit Mahiji Makwana passed the HSC exams that were declared yesterday with 41 per cent.
Previously, in 2008, Makwana had appeared for the Std X exams and passed with 55 per cent. ('Papa daswi pass ho gaya', June 27, 2008).

Currently, travelling to Mangalore for his son's graduation, Makwana's happiness knew no bounds. When asked how he was informed of the good news, he said, "I was travelling to Mangalore.

However, my son Nilesh was carrying his laptop and as we were aware that the results would be announced, I checked and received the news," said Makwana, adding that he will throw a celebration party in Mangalore.

Makwana did not rely on tuitions to pass his exams and says that he passed with the help and support of his teachers at YJS Junior Night College at Tardeo.

He also states that the news has brought a smile to the faces of his entire family, especially his wife, who prayed for him all these days.

And it's not just his family that is proud of his achievement. "People from Willingdon Sports Club at Haji Ali, where Makwana works, have also praised me," he said.

And Makwana is also grateful to his colleagues for their support. "Despite the age factor, I continued my studies as my superiors inspired me to continue.

My bosses, Secretary AK Kapoor and Deputy Secretary Dilip Joshi were all inspiring and supportive. They helped me in every way and allowed me to take a few days off too.

I had to take leave for the exams and studied around seven-eight hours during my leave right before the exams. I worked hard and I am happy."

And Makwana has some advice for others out there. "My studies have helped me gain attention. When I cleared my SSC examinations in 2008, I was promoted at work.

Education has given me respect and hence I will continue to study," said Makwana.

And a proud son Nilesh said, "Age is no bar, anybody can study at any age. One only requires dedication and commitment."
