A rare surgery was performed on a 28-year-old woman here to remove a six kg tumour from her abdomen, doctors have said.

Vijay Kumar, a general surgeon at Kamineni Hospitals, performed the surgery on Manjula, resident of a village in Nizambad district, at a meagre cost.

Ravi Babu, Chief Operating Officer, Kamineni Hospitals at Basheerbagh here, said Manjula came to the medical facility a fortnight ago complaining of a severe pain in the abdomen. Although she had been suffering from the problem since the last two years and had visited several hospitals, no doctors had diagnosed the tumour in her abdomen, he said.

She approached Kumar, who performed lapratomy (opening of the abdomen) and found the tumour occupying a large portion of the abdomen. The surgery, performed a couple of days ago, lasted for three and half hours, Babu said.

Kumar said tumours of such big size are rare and any further delay could have proved fatal as the tumour was touching kidneys. The operation cost just Rs 25,000 of which only Rs 15,000 was paid by the patient.

Normally, the procedure would have cost over Rs 1.5 lakh to 2 lakh but seeing the economic condition of the patient the hospital only charged her for the disposables used, hospital sources said.
