Ice cream is a favourite dessert enjoyed by people all over the world. The popular dessert is perhaps one of the perfect inventions by humans. Typically made from dairy products, such as milk and cream, this food item is consumed as a dessert and also as a snack in various forms. In the United States, a National Ice Cream Day is celebrated on the third Sunday in July, and now it has become a global event. We celebrate Ice Cream Day and the Ice Cream Month by looking at six reasons why ice-creams are good for you!

Historical Scoop of Ice Cream Day:

The National Ice cream day was created by an official proclamation by former US President Ronald Reagan in 1984. In the proclamation, Regan called ice cream the perfect dessert and snack food. In addition to observing a National Ice Cream Day, the proclamation also designated July as the National Ice Cream Month, which has also become a tradition. While the history of National Ice Cream Day is an indisputable truth, the same can’t be said about the history of the ice cream itself. Many countries have claimed that the frozen delight is their invention, but majority credit the invention of modern ice cream to the Chinese during the seventh century. The rest, as they say, is history.

Healthy Cheat Treats:

The combination of milk, cream and sugar can never appeal to health-conscious individuals who tend to avoid the frozen dessert in the fear of gaining weight.

But, what if we told you that Ice Cream is not as bad as it is and if eaten in moderation can have some surprising health benefits too? Don’t believe? Here are six scoops as to why you should treat yourself with ice cream.

Scoop 1: Ice Cream will help you lose weight
A study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition has found that women who ate a daily serving of full-fat dairy products, such as an ice cream, gained less weight than those who did not. Now, that’s not a reason to gulp down a tub of ice cream and expect to lose weight overnight. But, a half-cup serving of vanilla or a chocolate ice cream that comprises about 140 calories, 7g fat, and 14g sugar can easily be an integral part of diet and lifestyle.

Scoop 2: Ice Cream can boost your sex drive
Yes, you heard it right! If you’ve been looking for some help between the sheets than ice cream may be your answer. Ice creams have rich sources of calcium and phosphorus that helps to build the body’s energy reserves and boost the libido. According to a study released by the Chicago’s Smell and Taste Treatment and Research Foundation (CSTTRF), men are aroused by the scent of vanilla that increases their arousal and passion for sex.

Scoop 3: Ice Cream at breakfast can yield some positive results
A professor at Tokyo's Kyorin University, Yoshihiko Koga, claimed that eating ice-cold food immediately after waking up first thing in the morning activates the brain increasing alertness and mental capacity. In a series of clinical trials, participants were forced to eat ice cream first thing after waking up and it was discovered that the ice-cream eaters had an increase in high-frequency alpha waves which are associated with lowered stress levels and heightened alertness. So if wondering how to benefit from a healthy morning breakfast, consider the ice cream therapy discovered by Koga.

Scoop 4: Ice Cream will leave you smiling and happy
Ever wondered why you feel so good every time you lick a scoop of ice cream? Well, it’s not just because ice creams taste delicious. You might think we are bluffing but the sweeter truth is that a spoonful of the frozen delight can actually make you smile and leave you happy. Researchers from the Institute of Psychiatry in London did a workshop in which participants were given eating vanilla ice cream to eat. It was witnessed that the participants had an immediate effect on an area of the brain called the orbitofrontal cortex after consuming the frozen dessert. The orbitofrontal cortex is a pleasure centre that activates in the brain when people enjoy themselves or feel happy.

Scoop 5: Ice Cream may help fight infertility
A Harvard study published in the journal Human Reproduction suggests that consuming full-fat milk or ice cream are good for women who have infertility issues as it improves chances of having a baby. The study looked at the eating habits of more than 18,000 women between the age of 24 and 42 and found out that women who ate full-fat ice cream at least two or more times a week had a 38 per cent lower risk of ovulation-related infertility than women who had full-fat ice cream less than once a week. Ice Cream also helps women to overcome nausea in their early stages of pregnancy, claimed the study.

Scoop 6: Ice Cream is a great source of Energy
One cannot deny that ice cream isn’t exactly a health food. But it does provide your body with a handful of key nutrients that are a great source of energy. The calcium and phosphorus help to strengthen the bones while potassium helps in lowering blood pressure levels and Vitamin B boost the body with energy. Besides that Ice cream also provides a decent amount of protein that plays an important role in tissue repair and cell growth. According to the US Department of Agriculture, there are 137 kilocalories of energy in one-half cup of vanilla ice cream, about twice the number in one-half cup of milk. Thus making Ice cream a super good choice especially when one needs energy or is planning to lose weight.
