62 cameras to monitor city airport

After a spurt of thefts and robberies at the sensitive cargo complex at the Mumbai International Airport highlighted poor security measures, officials have now installed 62 CCTV cameras at key locations including the cargo complex

Officials claim that the installation of the cameras will help in keeping an eye on the location and aid in preventing thefts and also in reducing problems of touts at the airport.

After MiD DAY highlighted the issue of lack of eyes in the area ('Customs, traders want CCTVs in theft-prone cargo complex') the cameras have been installed.

A senior Customs official at the Airport cargo complex said, "To ensure better monitoring of goods at the cargo complex, the need of CCTV cameras was addressed in the meeting with the airport authority.

The customs commissioner office inside the cargo complex has also been given access to the monitoring of all these cameras."

DCP Satyanarayan Chaudhary, Zone VIII, said, "Acting on our request, the airport authority has installed 62 cameras, which will cover all the important points."

Manish Kalghatgi, official spokesperson of the Mumbai airport said, "Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL) is committed to the issue of security and strict monitoring of the entire area.

Touts will also be monitored with the CCTV cameras. We want to ensure that all important spots including the parking lot, the departure and arrival terminals, the taxi bay, the cargo area and also the connecting roads to the airport including a stretch of the Western Express Highway will be monitored."
