Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) officials see this as a sign of changing times. In a first for the organisation, 86 persons from the transgender community have applied for the imminent lucky draw of flats, as evident with the aforementioned number of hopefuls having selected the ‘other’ gender in the application form.

This year MHADA has received 93,559 applications for 1,244 homes in contention – 87,647 of the submissions have been selected. The draw is scheduled for May 31 at Rangsharda auditorium in Bandra west.u00a0D K Jagdale, the Joint Chief Officer, MHADA, said, “We have received forms that have specified the applicants’ gender as ‘other’. This year, we included the option under the gender query.
We have received 86 such applications and it’s encouraging that society has become more accepting.” According to Jagdale, these aspirants have applied for flats under the Economically Weaker Section (EWS) category.
The ones that got lucky early
Nearly a dozen lottery contenders have already won, each being the sole applicant for a certain flat. Similarly, some categories of homes haven’t received the required number of applications, and hence 10-12 homes have not found takers.
