At least nine persons died and 32 fell sick allegedly after consuming spurious liquor at two villages in East Midnapore district, a senior police officer said today

Kolkata: At least nine persons died and 32 fell sick allegedly after consuming spurious liquor at two villages in East Midnapore district, a senior police officer said today.

The nine deaths were reported from Narikeldaha, Kiyarana in Moyna police station limits in East Midnapore district in the past two days, SP Alok Rajoria told PTI, adding that two persons have been arrested in this connection so far.

"Five persons died till late tonight while four died yesterday and we are probing if the deaths were caused by consuming of illicit liquor. We have sent our team to look into the matter," Rajoria said.

While four persons from Kiyarana had died till today afternoon, one more succumbed at 'Purba Medinipur Zilla Hospital' late tonight taking today's death toll to five and the overall hooch death toll in past two days to nine, he said.

Meanwhile, at least 32 were hospitalised at local Moyna health centre and the 'Purba Medinipur Zilla Hospital' but all in stable condition, the SP, who went to the affected villages, said, adding, they were admitted after complaining of uneasiness.

Series of raids are on at different places in and around Moyna Tehsil as part of the investigation, Rajoria said.
