You've got to thank the Americans for some of the most popular cocktails in the world, be it the hangover curing Bloody Mary, Carrie Bradshaw's favourite Cosmopolitan or the evergreen Manhattan (in pic), made with whiskey, vermouth, bitters and topped with a cherry.

The gin-based cocktail was concocted at Raffles Hotel. It's made with cherry, herbal liquor and lime but several versions exist, including one with pineapple juice.

The inventor of this cocktail was reminded of the colour of the toga of a saint painted by Venetian artist Giovanni Bellini, hence the name. It's made with peach purée and Prosecco sparkling wine.

Gin and Tonic: India
We might love Scotch or rum, but Gin and Tonic like the India Pale Ale is a gift of the British East India Company. A combination of tonic water, gin and a squeeze of lime over ice, this cocktail was enjoyed by the troops in a bid to save themselves from malaria.
