The Umbilical Cord, a group exhibition by 14 female artists, is a celebration of womanhood
We live in a country that doesn't need a reason to enjoy, where even a date that rhymes is celebrated as a big fest (11.11.11 was celebrated with much zest). A lot of concerts were organised across the nation, many people got married, and many opted for forced ways of giving birth, it's time we celebrated something more realistic.

So, Shridharani Art Gallery is hosting a group show by 14 female artists to celebrate womanhood through an exhibition named The Umbilical Cord. Talking about the idea behind the exhibition, Debashree Banerjee, the curator says: "Umbilical cord is an extension of a woman. The exhibition is basically about exploring a thread that connects women of different generations together and thus celebrating womanhood."
"I use canvas and do quilting on it. My work here is based on the repressed desires within us. No one wants to accept it, see it or even acknowledge it," says sculptor Tisha Mandal. "The result of this repression, as widely understood, is the phenomenon of 'desire'. In my work, I therefore appreciate the presence of this repression, which exists as a part of the everyday life. My work tries to locate the phenomenon of desire in the everyday world," adds Mandal.
Artist Nilanjana Nandy's works are confined to two-dimensional surface, essentially mixed media on paper. Some of them are collages with drawings. "With collages of my own sketches, I create mixed media drawings where distinct surfaces are woven into a coherent whole. I love to experiment and with such experimentation, I want to take my narrative to another level of revelation" says Nandy. So visit this exhibition as it talks about an unspoken commonality which all women share.
