A padyatra turned into a tragedy for a 25 year-old Jogeshwari resident, who was hit by a moving vehicle at
Vavim near Shirdi, on Thursday. Geetesh Khandekar, who was accompanied by other Nityanand Sai followers was just a day away from Shirdi when he was hit by a Scorpio.

Khandekar was immediately rushed to the nearest hospital at Sinnar and then shifted to Nashik hospital after which his family had him admitted to KEM Hospital where he is still in the ICU.

Vavi police have confiscated the Scorpio. Police constable B Mali said, "The driver of the Scorpio fled after the accident. Investigations revealed that it belonged to a Mumbai resident and was given on hire." The vehicle was occupied by three persons heading to Shirdi and the accident occurred when the car tried to overtake a bus.

Meanwhile doctors at KEM Hospital revealed, "We cannot comment about the patient's progress right now. He is suffering from a head injury and is in a critical condition. Treatment is on and we have kept him on the ventilator."

Eknath Khandekar, the victim's uncle said, "Every year Geetesh undertakes a padyatra to Shirdi. We never thought anything of this sort would occur. "
