In a major breakthrough in RTI activist Satish Shetty's murder case, Pune (rural) police have found that the conspiracy for the crime was hatched in Yerwada Central Jail. On Sunday, Prashant Kode, an eyewitness in the case, identified one of Shetty's assailants, who is lodged in the prison.

Shetty, through his RTI application, had found that advocate Vijay Dabade, the key conspirator in the case, had allegedly constructed a bungalow on land belonging to the railways and subsequently lodged a complaint. A part of the bungalow was found to be illegal and was demolished between 2008 and 2009. This allegedly angered the lawyer.u00a0 Dabade was arrested during the same period and sent to Yerwada jail.

Jail connection

Dabade allegedly came in contact with Shyam Dabade, who has over 12 cases of murder lodged against him, in Yerwada. The lawyer offered a Rs 2-lakh supari to Shyam to kill Shetty. Shyam, in turn, approached Navnat Shelar, a sharpshooter from the Amar Naik gang, and offered him Rs 1 lakh. The job was finally outsourced to Dongre Rathod, a Chhota Rajan henchman, for Rs 50,000. Rathod made two failed attempts to eliminate Shetty -- in November and December, 2009.

It was during this period that Shetty had requested the police to provide security to him, but to no avail. He was shot dead near his residence at Talegaon-Dabhade on January 13.

Pratap Dhigavkar, superintendent of police, Pune (rural) confirmed that the eyewitness has identified Rathod as one of the assailants. "We are waiting for a final report from the nayab tehsildar who conducted the identification parade. We are also seeking a transfer remand for Shyam Dabade, who has been arrested by the Ahmed Nagar police. His custodial interrogation is a must, as we believe he is also involved in the murder," he said.
