Actor Dino Morea lends glamour to MiD DAY Corporate Soccer Championship

Actor Dino Morea kicks off Day One of MiD DAY Corporate Soccer Championship 2012 at the Western Railway ground as 17 teams battle it out for the eight quarter-final spots

The third edition of the MiD DAY Corporate Soccer Championship kicked off admidst much fanfare at the Western Railway Ground, Lower Parel on Saturday.

Bollywood actor and football enthusiast Dino Morea along with MiD DAY Infomedia Ltd’s Managing Director & CEO Manajit Ghoshal flagged off the 17-team competition following an oath of fair play taken by the captains of all participating teams. The seven-a-side competition, played across last weekend offered a winner’s purse of a whopping Rs 100,000. The teams were divided into four groups, with each match comprising 20 minutes (10 mins each half). The top two teams from each group qualified for the quarter-finals.

Defending champions, Hutchinson Global Services began their campaign on a winning note. They registered a 1-0 win over winners of the inaugural edition of the tournament, HDFC. Hutchinson then went on to win both their league matches and to qualify for the quarter-finals. 

NCO-India ‘A’ and Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) were the other two teams who were impressed in their respective groups having won all their respective league encounters to book an entry into the quarter-finals.

Corporate bigwigs — British Airways World Cargo, Philips Electrolux, Serco Global Services ‘A’ & ‘B’, Standard Chartered, Online Tourism & Freight were the other teams who also did well and made it to the pre-quarters-final stage.

Cleophas Fernandes from British Airways World Cargo led the race for the coveted Golden Boot award — carrying a cash prize of Rs 20,000 — having scored nine goals from three matches. Rishi Pillai of Hutchinson Global Services and Shairesh Bawkar of Online Tourism & Freight were tied second with six goals each.

At the end of Day One, the quarter-finalists were NCO-India-A, Serco Global Services ‘A’, Serco Global Services ‘B’, British Airways World Cargo, Standard Chartered, Hutchinson Global Services, Online Tourism & Freight and Tata Consultancy Services.

MiD DAY’s employees indulged in a friendly match at close of play, wherein MiD DAY Yellow beat MiD DAY Green 5-3 via tie-breaker. Sanjay Pattar opened the scoring for Green team in the first half before Suraj Kunder made it 1-1. In the tie-breaker, Kunder, Amit Kabre, Nitin Tewari and Mohd Javed Khan were on target for MiD DAY Yellow, while only Sanjay Pattar and Krishna Nagre managed to score for MiD DAY Green.
