After Force One, QRT on its toes

To be part of Quick Response Team, 2,500 cops from all over state train in batches in city to take on terrorists till arrival of Force One

The Quick Response Team (QRT) is arriving soon, and will function as the first counter-strike weapon in the hands of the state in case of a terrorist attack.

Though the state has raised a group of crack commandos known as Force One on the lines of the National Security Guard after 26/11, it is aware that terrorists need to be deprived of even the time it would take for Force One to be on the scene in the event of a terror attack at places other than Mumbai.

So a QRT of 2,500 policemen from different cities is being readied to meet terrorism-related threats. Besides the city, the policemen are from Navi Mumbai, Thane, Nagpur, Nashik, Solapur and Nanded, among others.

The QRT team is being trained at Wadachi Wadi in Pune, where the Force One training was also conducted.

"The whole purpose of imparting this training to these select policemen from different commissionerates is to ensure that time is not wasted while waiting for the arrival of Force One which is headquartered in Mumbai," said Deputy Inspector General S Jagannathan of Force One.

Month-long training
The training will last a month under Force One instructors. The policemen will undergo training in batches of 200.

L S Pawar, an instructor from Force One who is training the QRT, said the objective is to make the police officers physically and mentally strong, in order to combat terrorists over a long duration.

The intensive training includes night exercises, firing practice with modern weapons and rescue operations.

Sub-Inspector D V Jalakar from Nashik, who is undergoing the training, said, "The training which we are getting here is different from police training. Here we are given specialised training which includes intensive firing practice, rappelling and a number of counter-terror tactics."

Superintendent of Police Chiranjeevi Prasad of Force One said, "The basic thrust of the training is to impart specialised urban warfare techniques and honing shooting skills. The QRT is going to be imparted specialised training in modern weapons, including AK-47, Glock pistols and other automatic weapons."
