"Writing for cinema requires both logical and intuitive thinking. Someone who is more inclined towards the beauty of literary devices like the interior monologue may not be too happy writing for this medium," says Satyanshu Singh, who will be conducting the upcoming session of The Fundamentals of Screenwriting, presented by AIB First Draft.

Singh, who is a National Award-winning filmmaker, writer and professor of cinema, says the session will be a foundational one that will help those interested in writing for cinema, including both novices and senior professionals.

It will deal with the basics of screenwriting, the concepts of conflicts, writing memorable characters and narrative art. Singh, whose poems have featured in Vikramaditya Motwane’s Udaan, believes that there is little literary beauty involved in the writing process for cinema.

An earlier workshop

"Everything has to be said visually. Moreover, there is always a chance that the director or the actor can change the words during the scene. One has to be open to such changes as in cinema it is not the writer who takes the final call," Singh explains.

The session involves impromptu writing, which the participants work on through the day using the skills they learn at the workshop. "This is the fourth such session. In the last three sessions (of 30 students each), the students have said that their stories changed dramatically with what they picked up during the process," he adds.

But can writing be taught? Isn’t it all about talent? "Music and athletics often require more knack than writing but it is well known how much training an athlete or a musician requires to become good. Writing is no different," Singh signs off.
