Christmas Eve on Thursday will be the same again. The revellers will have no hassles in procuring alcohol, or visiting hotels and pubs to enjoy the festival.

The All India Majlis Ittehadul Muslimeen’s (AIMIM) efforts, for seeking a ban on alcohol on Eid-e-Milad, which falls on Christmas Eve (December 24) fizzled out, as the party could not move the Bombay High Court on Wednesday.

However, the party has decided not to end the fight against the alleged discrimination towards the Muslim community. It said that the demand would be raised ahead of the Eid-e-Milad festival next year and a massive agitation would be staged, if need be.

AIMIM legislator of Byculla, Waris Pathan told mid-day on Wednesday that he could not file a petition in the court, because of lack of time. “Also since the court holidays start tomorrow (Thursday), it would have been difficult for us to fight our case properly,” he said.

On Tuesday, Pathan had told this publication that he would seek permission from his party boss Asaduddin Owaisi for the petition. He said he had discussed the idea with Owaisi, but couldn’t implement it because of technical reasons.

On Monday, both AIMIM and the Congress had strongly reacted to the state’s decision of issuing notification in contravention to their demand for alcohol ban on December 24, which is also Christmas eve. Like every year, the state will allow liquor shops, permit rooms and pubs to run till extended hours on December 25, 26 and December 31 (New Years). The excise department has been doing this for many years to facilitate revelry on these days and also for earning additional revenue.

Preferring to take a backseat on the issue, the Congress has left the decision to the government. The Congress has been fighting with AIMIM for taking credit for raising the demand.
