Thirteen-year-old Akshan Shetty of Thakur Vidya Mandir (Kandivli) excelled first in the singles and then in the doubles to ensure his school made it to the semi-finals of the team championships of the U-16 Mumbai Schools Sports Association (MSSA) inter-school badminton tournament at the Cricket Club of India courts yesterday
The Kandivli team beat Parle Tilak (Vile Parle) 2-1 in the best-of-three quarter-final.

In the first singles, Akshan defeated Parle Tilak’s Mihir Dharap 21-10, 21-9. However, in the second singles, his teammate Soham Kulkarni lost to Rajas Sule 15-21, 19-21, leaving the doubles encounter to decide the outcome of the tie. Akshan then paired up with Soham to beat Parle Tilak’s duo of Mihir and Rajas 15-8, 15-11.
In the first round the Kandivli team registered a 2-0 win over St Blaise High School (Andheri). In the second round, they overcame IES VN Sule Guruji (Dadar) 2-1.
