Alas, we had to miss Twinkle and Akshay Kumar’s party on Monday night due to unforeseen circumstances. “Do you play cards?” the lovely Mrs Funny Bones had called to enquire last week by way of an invitation.

“Yes, but only for the smallest stakes,” we’d replied, fondly recalling our annual childhood Diwali Rummy playing sessions when we’d play within the family with stakes that never went higher than a few paise to the accompaniment of much laughter and bonhomie.

The Twinkle-Akshay Diwali bash was in the same spirit of fun, except of course far more glamorous, with what looked like the entire film industry in attendance.

From Rishi Kapoor and Jitendra to Karan Johar, Siddharth Malhotra, Abu Jani, Sandeep Khosla, Rima Jain, Ritesh and Genelia Deshmukh and the Roshans they were all there in their festive spirit with Twinkle’s glamorous mum Dimple Khanna (an ardent and very adept card player) in her element.

And when the Bachchans - Amitabh, Jaya, Abhishek and Aishwarya made their grand entry post midnight following Amitabh’s pack up at shooting, the party expectedly went in to top gear. Incidentally, a wild card entry at this quintessential Bolly town bash was the presence of Delhi-based publisher Chiki Sarkar who prior to her Juggernaut avatar had been Twinkle’s first publisher at Penguin.

As we said, we had been looking forward to attending the Twinkle-Akshay Diwali bash because when we’d asked Twinkle for the dress code and threatened to turn up like a Christmas tree she’d been encouraging. “Come as a Christmas tree,” she’d said. Alas that was not to be, but next year we plan to go as a firecracker.

Guess who came to dinner
Rakesh Jhunjhunwala’s grand multi-tiered Diwali bash, held on various floors of his Ridgeway residence has indeed been the cynosure of all eyes for its flamboyance and larger than life proportions (even the food was catered by Flamboyant) much like Jhunjhunwala himself, but a surprise guest at the country’s leading investor and trader’s monster of a party was none other than the usually low profile Anand Mahindra who was seen exchanging Diwali greetings with the best of them in a festive kurta pajama ensemble. The suave Harvard educated Mahindra at a card playing Diwali bash? The mind boggles.

Gathering of Scorpio girls
This weekend Jewellery designer Poonam Soni will be celebrating her birthday with a ‘Scorpio party’ at Olive Bandra along with some of her fellow Scorpio friends like Nawaz Singhania, Raveena Tandon Thadani, Nandita (Om) Puri and her own daughter Kriti Soni.

“It’s about 60 people and a fun afternoon. We are cutting a big Scorpio cake,” said the petite designer of bespoke high-end jewellery who attributes much of her success to her Buddhist practice.

Incidentally, we’ve known a few Scorpio ladies in our lifetime and to a woman they’ve been formidable fiery and fun: Indira Gandhi, Zeenat Aman, Nita Ambani and Aishwarya Rai are all Scorpio women. And given that one is a handful, a party for a handful of them might just prove to be a riot!

Homi with fan
He’s never been above an occasional bout of sending himself up, but for our money this candid capture of hunky deep sea diving director Homi Adajania at the opening ceremony of Jio Mami held at the Gateway of India recently with the caption: Director Homi Adajania with a fan, is beyond hilarious.

‘Must you reveal the ONLY fan I have?’ He grumbled sportingly to the poster of the spoofy pic on a social networking site. We like!

Angad Paul RIP
The suicide of young businessman Angad Paul on Sunday has sent a pall of gloom over the London-based community of NRIs already reeling from the death of Lord Noon last month.

Angad, the 45-year-old son and heir of Lord Paul the founder of steel giant CAPARO, was found dead after he fell from his 8th floor apartment in Marylebone. He is said to have been under intense stress after his company CAPARO Industries, of which he was CEO, was on the brink of collapse and had to lay off hundreds of workers.

The youngest son of Swraj had been a musician and film producer (Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, Snatch, The Tournament) and had been the inspiration behind the CAPARO T1, which was the world’s fastest supercar when it was launched in 2006.

When we had met his father Swraj in London in the mid-eighties, Angad must have been just a boy in his teens and we recall the pride and affection his father had taken when he spoke about his young son, (especially his passion for drumming in particular), who had been born to his wife Aruna and himself in their middle age. Our condolences to the family, may they find strength to face this profound tragedy.

Art on a Platter
With the onslaught of Diwali gifting, one gift that has elicited much admiration is that of Standard Chartered bank, which has sent some of their key customers a Paresh Maity painted ceramic plate.

“Finally it takes a multinational to give Indian Art its due, Standard Chartered Bank has sent us this beautiful wall plate designed by Paresh Maity no less,” said one delighted Sobo matron.
