All it takes is an idea

If you're sitting on a bright idea but can't seem to find the light, head to the Tedx Gateway, a one-day conference featuring 22 speakers from 17 countries, who will focus on a host of solutions ranging from water shortage to female foeticide

All it takes is an idea

Globally, the Technology, Entertainment and Design (TED) conferences are known to bring bright minds from around the world on a single platform where they share their inspiring stories and help facilitate other innovative ideas. The Tedx Gateway refers to an independently organised TED event, and this weekend, you can head to their third edition being held at the NCPA.

Yashraj Akashi, curator of Tedx Gateway, is gung-ho, “TEDxGateway is back, bigger and better. Nearly 22 speakers from 17 countries will be here. Also people from across the globe have shown interest and will attend the forum. It is being considered as the third biggest TEDx event in the world. The intent is to leave every individual inspired and have them take back an idea, the courage and the motivation to excel in their respective fields of work.”


The line-up of speakers includes Shree Bose, who is conducting research projects on ovarian cancer and on ways to treat patients who no longer respond to chemotherapy, Usman Riaz, an artist, composer and self-taught multi-instrumentalist, Ewan Grae Davis, director of the film It’s a Girl, Rosemary Nalden, founder of the Buskaid Soweto String Project which promotes music in South Africa, Arunachalam M, founder of the world’s first low-cost machine to produce sanitary towels and Abelardo Gonzalez, creator of the OpenDyslexic font.

These 22 speakers were shortlisted from a total of 3,000 people. “We consider relevance to the region, freshness of the idea, its power on an audience and most importantly, it needs to be path breaking to inspire people and tell a story. We also try and maximise our resources to ensure a TED-like conference for our Indian audience,” believes Akashi. Some of the challenges they have faced is to actually explain to people the TED philosophy. Their target audience includes CEOs, industrialists, enterpreneurs and students. Next up, they plan to expand their horizon by having a women’s edition, kids’ edition and youth edition in 2013.
