Colaba community initiative sees professionals and volunteers come together to up area’s aesthetic quotient
It was an artsy weekend at Cuffe Parade, beginning on Saturday afternoon and ending yesterday. A wall near Machimar Nagar No 5 on Capt. Prakash Pethe Marg, opposite Health Spring Clinic, was the site of major revamp. Volunteers from My Dream Colaba, a Non Government Organization (NGO) and New Acropolis, an art, culture and philosophy school gathered to clean, repair and paint the wall.

Cynthia D’mello from My Dream Colaba said, “We were debating over a number of walls we could do, but since this one was centrally located and in particularly bad shape, we decided to paint this wall. After requisite permissions, cleaning and repairing, we began painting the wall.”

Ubai Husein, New Acropolis volunteer said, “We finished painting yesterday afternoon. On Saturday, we saw technical work on, it is nice to have people from one area working together to better it.”
Nilesh Mohite, Colaba artist was guiding and advising volunteers, when we met him over the weekend. He stated, “The ideas came from this group, but for technical aid, I am here to give whatever help is needed. I decided I needed to be there to support this initiative, I am here for that purpose specifically.”
Corporator of ‘A’ Ward under which Cuffe Parade comes, Makarand Narwekar said, “It is a great idea to paint and take care of public walls. I fully support this initiative.”
Wall repairs and painting drew many observers who also volunteered to paint and help. Senior citizen, Kaiser Roli who lives in the area said, “I like the way My Dream Colaba takes care of this wall. I want to contribute, so I am here.”
D'mello adds, “It is very inspiring to see people come together to beautify the area. I hope many other areas in the city also follow our lead and make Mumbai more colourful and clean,” she stated. The completed wall has Harmony written on it.
This is not the first time that Clean Colaba has revamped a wall. Some time ago, the community came together to paint a wall near Cuffe Parade, with the message Hope on it. In November last year, well-known artist Paresh Maity unveiled a sculpture at a traffic island at Pandey Chowk, Colaba on a Sunday evening, yet another effort to up the area’s aesthetic quotient.
