Sanskari babuji on how his haters helped him transition from the righteous man to Mr Funnybones

While industry veterans have expressed dissent over the growth of social media due to its abusive nature, film and television actor Alok Nath sees opportunity in his mockery.

Having emerged as the 'sanskari babuji' - given his selection of roles as the righteous father throughout his career - Nath became the muse of trolls, who circulated several memes at his expense. But, instead of lashing out at them, Nath's decision to laugh along not only won him brownie points, but quirky roles too.

"Several avenues have opened up for me after people started poking fun at me on social media. The kind of offers coming my way are far distanced from the one's I've played in my career. I have a quirky role in the upcoming comedy, Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety. The makers of the film have also brought me aboard two other projects which will also see me in comic roles," Nath tells mid-day.

The actor in turn has social media to thank for helping him explore his eccentric side. "It changed the perception that people had of Alok Nath. I shifted from being the typical father figure to a funny man," says Nath, who also wrapped up a short web film for an adult diaper brand. "It's a light-hearted outing that hopes to sensitise the audience towards senior citizens," he says, adding that he'd be willing to partake in similar gigs. "Short sketches carry social messages, and they offer good money too. I'd be glad to be part of them."
