The 37-year-old mother of six has explained her reasons for having the surgery in the New York Times.

The actress said that genetic tests found that she had an 87 percent chance of acquiring breast cancer and a 50 percent risk of ovarian cancer.

She said her doctors estimated she had an 87% risk of breast cancer and a 50% risk of ovarian cancer. "I decided to be proactive and to minimise the risk as much I could," she wrote.

She said the process began in February and was completed by the end of April.

The Oscar-winning actress insisted that her chance of contracting breast cancer is now reduced to five percent, the Sun reported.

The Hollywood star wrote that her mom Marcheline Bertrand fought cancer for almost a decade and died at the age of 56.

Jolie said that she wrote about it, as she hopes that other women can benefit from her experience.

She also praised Pitt for his support throughout the process that she said brought their family closer.
