Anjuman-I-Islam skipper Khizar Dafedar admits he is desperate to avoid the kind of embarrassment Rizvi Springfield inflicted on them in the Giles Shield final last year.u00a0

Last season, Anjuman had conceded the game after Rizvi posted a score in excess of 450 in reply to their modest total of 173. This year, the all-rounder needs his side to put up a brave show if they are to win the U-14 title.

But, the skipper ended up with a feeling of deja vu yesterday after his side was reduced to 138 for five in 78 overs in the first day of Giles Shield final at the Vengsarkar Academy, Oval Maidan.

u00a0Opting to bat, Anjuman got off to a reasonable start but lost their way at the end of the day after losing three wickets for just one run. Dafedar was their top-scorer as he remained unbeaten on 68.

Dafedar trains at the Vengsarkar Academy and had briefed his teammates about the nature of the pitch.

"Unlike low and slow pitches at Azad and Cross Maidan, pitches at the Oval help the ball skid a lot. I've been practising here and had warned my teammates about it, but looking at the scorecard at the end of the day, I don't think it made much of a difference," said the dejected captain.u00a0

u00a0"I thought we had a reasonable start when we were around 100 for two but then we lost three quick wickets and fell far behind. Their spinners just didn't give us any breathing space," Khizar signed off.
