Are Bollywood stars finally comfortable with self parody?

Quite a few actors are drawing laughs even as they push the boundaries of comedy by being a good sport. With more actors learning to laugh at themselves, is B-Town finally loosening up?

Are Bollywood stars finally comfortable with self parody?

Self parody, Ranveer Singh, Alia Bhatt, potshots, Abhishek Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Salman Khan, Sohail Khan, Alok Nath, Neil Nitin Mukesh, Alia Bhatt, social media jokes

There is hardly anyone in B-Town, at least for now, who can match Ranveer Singh’s quirkiness. When Hrithik Roshan recently dared the Ram Leela star to pose on one of Mumbai’s thoroughfares, he went the distance, and then some more. Not only did Ranveer step out of his car on the shop-lined Linking Road wearing a Krrish costume, but also did some mean moves leaving onlookers amused.

Ranveer’s antics on the streets raised a laugh among social media groups too, but the actor doesn’t seem to care about it. The laughter serves as a motivating factor for him to exude more confidence. He is known to do zany things because of his innate ability to laugh at himself. Not many in B-Town have this quality, as they prefer to stick to their prim-n-proper appearances. How many stars do you know who would dare to poke fun at themselves?

Video gaga
Enough has been said of Alia Bhatt and her now famous IQ, thanks to her faux pas on Karan Johar’s chat show. The actress came up with a cracker of an idea — a funny video titled Alia Bhatt — Genius Of The Year, where she mocked herself.

Alia Bhatt
Alia Bhatt’s critics were silenced when she made fun of her lack of general knowledge by appearing in a spoof video

At that time she had said, “I chose to laugh about it as it was better that way. In fact, my father (Mahesh Bhatt) would make it a point to tell me who the chief minister was whenever I was travelling to other states. I was always into movies and music, but after my jokes started doing the rounds, I decided to brush up on my general knowledge as well.”

The meme muse
Jokes about character-actor Alok Nath’s Sanskari Babuji image burst on the scene last year. After having essayed the role of a revered Babuji in countless films, jokes about him spammed inboxes, but the veteran actor remained unfazed.

He even began listing his favourites during interviews and was even part of a video spoofing Arvind Kejriwal. A while ago when memes about Neil Nitin Mukesh did the rounds, he listed his favourite jokes on the ‘three-in-one’ actor.

What’s in a name?
Newcomer Tiger Shroff had to contend with jokes about his name even before his debut film, Heropanti, had released.

When parallels were drawn between his looks and Kareena Kapoor’s appearance, Tiger did not roar in disgust, but laughed at himself. At that time he had said, “If people think I look like Kareena, I take it as a compliment. She’s gorgeous.”

Khan-tastic
Sohail Khan and Salman Khan appeared on a comedy show to promote their film, Jai Ho. The latter laughed the loudest when the former shared an anecdote.

Sohail recalled that once Salman had called him up to say that he had got it, the ‘it’ referring to a story idea. But Sohail thought that Salman was talking about securing bail or a visa!

Getting sporty
Not very long ago, Sonam Kapoor was picked on for ending almost every other sentence with, “You know what I mean” on a talk show. Later, a song making fun of this was widely circulated. At that time, she had reportedly stated, “My friends and I laugh at it. I don’t think many people have a sense of humour, but I can laugh at myself. I’m constantly explaining…you know what I mean. But I have realised that I use those words a lot.”

Couple capers
Farah Khan and hubby, Shirish Kunder clearly don’t mind laughing at themselves. While Farah has no qualms cracking jokes about herself, Shirish takes recourse to social media to share wisecracks, many of which are about himself.

Sample this: “I’ve convinced my wife to do one hour of meditation everyday. That’s the one hour of peace I’ll get.”

Abhishek Bachchan too, is known to be able to laugh at himself. He displayed his love for self-deprecating humour by commenting about his Cannes experience with wife, Aishwarya Rai.

Sharing a photograph where they had posed for the paparazzi, he wrote on a microblogging site, “I make her look good!! Then again... anybody compared to me will look good.” It is also well known that Shah Rukh Khan loves making wisecracks and poking fun at himself.
