Though the police claim that the victim died after suffering a cardiac arrest, a relative of the deceased alleged that cops beat him up during interrogation to extract information about the source of the sham notes.

The Dharavi police had arrested two accused — Zulfikar alias Raffique Kamu Shaikh, (32) and Inamul Usman Shaikh (40) — from their residence near Dharavi Bus Depot on Thursday.

They recovered fake currency worth Rs 1.2 lakh in denominations of 500 and 1,000 from both the accused. Zulfikar, a taxi driver, used to pass on the notes to his passengers on the pretext of asking them for change.

Receiving a tip-off, Assistant Police Inspector Irfan Shaikh of the Dharavi police station nabbed them, and recovered the notes.

Last morning, doctors at Sion Hospital received a call from Dharavi police station, with cops saying that an arrested accused Zulfikar needed to be admitted. “Zulfikar was declared dead before being admitted to Sion Hospital. We asked the police to send his body to J J Hospital, which alone is authorised to perform post- mortems of arrested accused who are killed in police custody,” revealed a doctor from the hospital.

Additional Commissioner of Police (Central Region) Pravin Salunkhe said, “It looks like he died from a cardiac arrest. We are waiting for the post-mortem report, which will determine the future course of action.”

The body reached the hospital last evening, and a post- mortem is likely to be performed today. u00a0
