Aryan Goveas picked in Asian ITF squad
City lad Aryan Goveas, who has been making waves on the local tennis circuit, is all set to make his mark at the international scene now.
Aryan is the only Indian player from his age group (U-16) to be selected in the Asian ITF touring team as part of ITF’s Grand Slam Development Fund. As part of this program, Aryan will take part in three ITF Junior Ranking Tournaments (Grade2/Grade 3) from January 2-26.
Goveas follows into the footsteps of players like Li Na, Viktoria Azarenka and India’s Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi, who have earlier been selected as part of the international touring team.
The ITF touring team programme is a way of facilitating the transition of talented players to the professional ranks. Aryan, who began playing the ITF (U-18
circuit) only in November 2012, is confident of a good showing at the three tournaments despite the level of competition that awaits him.
“I want to win the tournament. I mean, everyone wants to win, but I want to at least make it to the semi-finals. I want to do well in these tournaments as they are a stepping stone to my professional success,” said the 15-year-old Goregaon resident.
