The Central Crime Branch (CCB) police solved a six-year-old murder case while going through a file of unsolved cases and seeking information from a local informer about a missing person.

The informer tipped them off about the missing man's wife having an extra-marital affair with another man for the past six years, which led to the case being cracked.

Syed Ziaulla (38) was running an almirah manufacturing unit and sometime in 2004 he befriended Pyare Jan, who was a plastic goods vendor. During the course of their friendship, Pyare Jan invited Ziaulla to his home on several occasions and introduced him to Reshma, his wife.

Some time during the period, Reshma and Ziaulla developed an attraction towards each other and soon began having an affair while Pyare Jan was out on work. Ziaulla was married to another woman and had two children, but that did not stop him from meeting Reshma whenever the urge surfaced.

Pyare Jan caught the duo in a compromising position and instead of ending his friendship with Ziaulla, he began to take advantage of the opportunity and blackmailed his wife's paramour into paying him to remain silent.

The adulterous affair continued for some time and Ziaulla began to incur losses in business and decided to do away with Pyare Jan once and for all instead of paying him whatever he demanded every time he visited Reshma.

In mid-January 2005, Ziaulla convinced Pyare Jan to accompany him to Chitoor district of neighboring Andhra Pradesh on the pretext of carrying out a business deal.

On the way, Ziaulla stopped his bike at an isolated spot to answer nature's call and stabbed Pyare Jan to death. He then poured petrol on the body and set it afire before returning home.

A few days later the jurisdictional Tavanampalli police of Chitoor district found a highly decomposed body and registered a case of un-natural death and since they could not establish the identity of the victim, the case was closed.

Meanwhile, Ziaulla returned to Reshma's home and confessed to the crime, but promised to take care of her needs and eventually moved in with her. It was only after six years that the CCB pulled up a file of unsolved cases and based on the tip-off, hauled the suspected murderer in for questioning and he confessed to his crime.

Organised Crime Wing Inspector, K C Ashokan said, "Ziaulla was running an almirah manufacturing unit and came across Pyare Jan, a pushcart vendor of plastic goods. After a couple of visits to the vendor's house, the accused befriended Reshma and gradually began having an extra-marital affair.

When the victim came to know about this, he began threatening to inform Ziaulla's wife if he did not give him money." The police said that the accused initially paid, but gradually the victim increased his demands. This led to losses and Ziaulla decided to kill Pyare Jan.

"We are contemplating action against Reshma as well for suppressing the crime," Ashokan said.
