New Delhi: Ashwani Lohani, a Railway Service officer, took over as the new Chairperson and Managing Director (CMD) of national carrier Air India (AI). He took charge yesterday evening, an AI spokesperson said.

Lohani succeeded Rohit Nandan, who has now been appointed as secretary in the Union Ministry of Skill Development. An engineer-turned-bureaucrat, Lohani, is the first Railway Service officer to head the airline. Prior to his appointment as AICMD, Lohani was heading Madhya Pradesh Tourism Develo-pment Corporation in Bhopal.

The Appointments Committee of Cabinet had approved the appointment of Lohani, a 1980 batch Indian Railway Service of Mechanical Engineers (IRSME) officer, as CMD of Air India Ltd for a tenure of three years on August 20. A qualified mechanical engineer, Lohani is a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport.

Soon after taking over as CMD, Lohani said, “Today, indeed I am privileged to join Team Air India. Being aware of the illustrious past, its inherent strengths and also the tremendous capability of fellow Air Indians, gives me confidence that we shall, in pursuit of excellence, be able to together rise and restore the old glory of the national carrier. Together we can and together we shall.”
