Hot head: John Daly leaves the course in a rage at the 11th hole.
Daly's troubles began on the 10th when he reacted angrily to receiving an automatic two-stroke penalty for hitting the wrong ball in the bunker. The two-time major winner then reached the 11th and proceeded to put six or seven balls -- officials were not sure of the exact number -- in the water before grabbing his young son and heading for the exit after telling his playing partners "I'm off".
Herden said Daly will never again be welcome at the Australian Open. "It's very disappointing, obviously, for the tournament (and) certainly unprofessional and I'm extremely bitter and disappointed that he's treated this championship this way," Herden said.
Lyle leads, Tiger lurks
Meanwhile, cancer survivor Jarrod Lyle held off a powerful American contingent, including former World No 1 Tiger Woods, to be the first-round leader. The Australian, who fought off leukemia as a teenager in 1999, carded a seven-under 65. Woods wrestled with gusty afternoon winds to keep in touch, three shots off the lead.
