The brain of Ayazuddin, the son of former India captain Mohammed Azharuddin, was dead on Thursday itself, more than 24 hours before Apollo Hospital pronounced the teenager dead, according to a senior doctor at the hospital in Hyderabad.

"We had informed this (that Ayaz had very little chance of surviving) the family on Thursday afternoon, but were asked to continue with the treatment in any case. The non-functioning of a brain is equal to death. However, Azharuddin was hoping for a miracle to happen," the doctor told MiD DAY yesterday.
It is learnt that the hospital's neurosurgeon, Alok Ranjan had examined Ayazuddin on Thursday before leaving for Muscat yesterday morning.

"Sadly, Ayazuddin could not survive. His heart stopped functioning at 11:51 am today (Friday)," said Ravindra Babu, the medical superintendent at the hospital. "Ayaz was critical from the first day itself, but being an athlete, he could perhaps battle for almost five days," Babu added.

Azhar calm
Observers at the hospital said that Azharuddin, although heartbroken, was a picture of calm amidst scenes of anguish. "Azhar took his son's death very boldly. However, the rest of the family could not hold back their tears. Naureen, Ayaz's mother, was crying. Even Sangeeta Bijlani, Azhar's second wife, could not control her emotions," said Babu.

It is learnt that Azharuddin's family had booked close to four rooms in the hospital. Ayazuddin, a budding cricketer from Hyderabad, was critically injured when his 1000CC Suzuki motorcycle skidded on the Outer Ring Road at Puppalguda last Sunday. His cousin Ajmal-ur-Rehman, who was pillion riding, died on the same day.
The 18-year-old had sustained injuries on his kidneys, lungs and brain, apart from multiple fractures. He was the younger of Azhar's two sons from his first wife Naureen.
