Get back to your rustic roots and decorate your home with colourful kitsch this Diwali

What's on your home decor agenda this Diwali? Raiding designer shops, flea markets or Dilli Haat? We suggest you go folksy this Diwali and travel back to your roots. Fairs being held across the Capital bear testimony to the fact that we still love our rustic roots, and our kitsch.

Take for example the Diwali Mela being held at the Blind School premises in Lodhi Road. While white tents are all you can see from the road outside, inside it is a riot of colours.

It is like a mela in the village out there and shoppers have thronged the place by the hordes. Interesting stalls have sprung up all over the grounds and even the building inside, selling everything from Chinese lanterns (and Indian ones too), clothes, jewellery of every imaginable variety, shoes, paintings, wine bottle holders, carpets, blinds, bedcovers and what have you.

Apart from people who have shops across the city, some stallowners are to be found only in exhibitions. There are NGOs too.

We spotted potter Anju Kumar at her stall, selling everything from spiritual figurines to urlis to sculptures to paintings. "The pottery is done using mixed medium and the colours are the usual festive colours of cream and gold," she says. Elsewhere in the fair, we came across brass torches, English Premier League inspired products and a host of eco-friendly stuff. Our advice is: Rush before it gets over.

On till: November 3
Timings: 10am to 8pm
At: Blind Relief Association,
Golf Links, Lodi Estate
