The 34-year-old Bhat caused an upset by defeating Chinese Taipei's 15th seed Tien Chen Chou 21-12, 12-21, 22-20 in a marathon thriller which lasted 56 minutes at the RWE-Sporthalle.

The Indian now has levelled his career record to 2-2 against the World No 24. After the World No 87 Indian dominated the first game, Tien returned to comprehensively win the next game and take the match into the decider, which turned out to be a neck-and-neck affair.

In the end, Bhat had two matchpoints at 20-18 but his higher ranked opponent saved both of them. The Indian, however, showed grit to notch the next two points and enter the final.
