Raut had been called as a witness by Jaidev Thackeray, elder brother of Sena executive president Uddhav Thackeray. The brothers are currently locked in a court battle over their father's will.

Jaidev's counsel, Seema Sarnaik, examined Raut before justice Gautam Patel. The line of questioning attempted to establish Raut's role in Saamana along with determining how often Jaidev wrote for the paper and details about a family picture published in the paper.
