From Madonna to Britney Spears ufffd crop tops were the flavour of the style scene in the 1990s, but after experiencing a lull and redundancy, this style statement is back with a bang, creating ripples in fashion circuits across the world
When a fad goes out of fashion, you better be sure about its return after a gap, be it vintage silhouettes or boot-cut jeans. Style trends are part of a circle —what goes around, comes around. This summer, one fashion statement that is back from the grave is the crop top. We’ve seen artists and celebrities don the same in different cuts and colours in the 1990s and now, the trend seems to have done a return.

“Crop tops have already taken over this summer, since the season is all about the 1990s and a minimalist approach. So, whether sporty crops, crop tees, bracelets or crop shirts, they’re big this season. We see a lot of celebrities Indian and international, sporting the crop top, nowadays.
Since high-waists are also in vogue, the crop top compliments this trend,” says young designer Nishka Lulla, whose Summer/Resort collection at this year’s Mumbai Fashion Week contained a heavy dose of crop tops.
Designer Rocky S advises that crop tops should be paired with calf-length skirts, high-waist fitted pants and chic blazers for an elegant look. Adding to that, designer Aniket Satam reveals that denim shorts and 1950s-style full skirts also make for a great option with crop tops. “Long-sleeved glittery ones look fabulous when teamed with high shorts or even wide leg palazzos,” he informs.
However, Rocky, whose favourite is the crop top in leather finesse or abstract resort feel print over it, has a piece of advice for fashionistas preparing to show off this style in their next outing, “Crop tops have made a huge comeback, and it’s trending big among the youth. But, it’s not for everyone. You need to have a great midriff to carry that top.” u00a0u00a0

>>Rocky S: One should not go overboard with the styling and combinations for the silhouettes while wearing a crop top.
>>Nishka Lulla: While wearing a crop top, wear a high-waist bottom and avoid showing the midriff a lot, so it looks sophisticated. A tease of the waistline is fine. The crop top doesn’t mean showing off your whole abdomen. Several innovations have been made in this trend. Now, it means a fresh look that demonstrates more than a glance of au00a0bare midriff.
>>Astha Narang: While pairing a crop top, ensure that top and bottom are not fitted because it might not look stylish. A thin waist makes a crop top look good; bulges are a big no-no.
