The mischievous little fella, who millions the world over have grown to love, turned eighty-two, yesterday. Trivia on the sweaky-voiced rodent who made his way on to TV screens and into our hearts

5 things we bet you did not know about MM

1 Had Oswald the Lucky Rabbit not been so unlucky, Mickey might never have seen the light of day. The announcement of a budget cut by Universal Studios to the Disney Studio, resulted in a falling out between the two. After seeing to his contractual obligations for the Oswald series, Walt Disney went back to the drawing board to create a new character. The result? Mickey Mouse.

2 Walt Disney got the inspiration for the character from his old pet mouse he used to have on his farm. This was after rejecting the idea of a female cow, a male horse, and a male frog (who later turned up as Clarabelle Cow, Horace Horsecollar, and Flip the Frog). It was his wife, Lillian, who convinced him to name the mouse Mickey instead of Mortimer.u00a0

3 Minerva 'Minnie' Mouse was proclaimed his 'sweetie' in June 1929. Mickey flirted with an unspecified number of women, including Miss Rabbit, Miss Cottontail and Fanny, before swearing his devotion to Minnie.

4 He is the first cartoon character to have a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

5 In September 2008, Sheikh Muhammad Al-Munajid issued a fatwa against Mickey, claiming that the sharia considers mice to be agents of satan. He later issued a statement claiming that he had been misquoted.

Our favourite animated mice

Jerry mouse, 60
The fictional animated brown mouse, created by American animators William Hanna and Joseph Barbera, first appeared in the 1940 Academy Award animated short Puss Gets The Boot. The creators were keen that Jerry be the "incurable scene stealer" and not the "cowering victim" in the cat-and-mouse series.

Stuart Little, 55
Stuart Little is a character from the first children's book written by American writer Elwyn Brooks White in 1945. The idea of the fictional talking mouse, born to human parents in New York, is said to have come to the author in a dream about a tiny boy, who "acted rather like a mouse".

Pinky and brain, 17
Pinky and Brain are genetically enhanced laboratory mice, who stay at the Acme Labs research facility. They first appeared in 1993 as a segment on the animated series Animaniacs. Pinky is the one with the heart of gold, while Brain is self-centered and the more conniving of the two.
