In response to challenge thrown by the Reddys daring rival leaders to enter Bellary, Siddaramiah, the leader of Opposition, will hold a rally in the district next month

While opposition parties turn on the heat on Bellary Reddys over illegal mining by demanding a CBI probe, senior BJP leaders are using the opportunity to cut the mining magnates to size.

Leaders of Congress and JD(S) made it clear that they would not settle for anything less than a CBI probe into illegal mining by the Reddy brothers.

The leaders staged a day-and-night dharna outside the Vidhan Soudha yesterday to register their protest.

"And our senior leaders have seen an opportunity in this to cut them to size because they were trying to control the government and the party through their money and muscle."

Last year, Chief Minister Yeddyurappa tried to regulate iron mining by levying surcharge on the transport of ore.

In response, the Reddys gathered MLAs in a hotel in Andhra Pradesh and threatened to topple his government.

Yeddyurappa had been reduced to tears then and he has reportedly not forgotten the Reddys for making him suffer.

"Yeddyurappa has not forgotten or forgiven. He is using the situation to his advantage," said
a source.

Rubbishing the speculations, K S Eswarappa, BJP state president, said, "The BJP is not so weak to use opposition parties to regulate its own ranks. We know the opposition's demands are unreasonable and we stand united to face them."

"It is not true that we are motivated by a desire to help Yeddyurappa or any other BJP leader," said Siddaramiah, leader of Opposition in the Assembly.

"Mining is a serious issue and we have taken this up in the interest of protecting the country's resources.

In response to the challenge thrown by the Reddys to enter Bellary, I have decided to hold a rally in the district in the first week of August."

Opposition demands

> Suspension of Reddy brothers Janardana Reddy, Karunakara Reddy, and Somashekara Reddyu00a0along with the MLAs Nagendra and Suresh Babu from the session for their unruly behaviour in the house

> Speaker's permission to book criminal cases against them under Section 506 for posing a threat to their lives

> Opposing speaker K G Bopiah's decision to form a house committee to probe the issue
